Original vintage PCBs for the project? That's the icing on the cake. Looking forward to the rest of the series

i buildt lots of kits back in the mid 70s and just started building kits again a couple of months back,glad to see that kit building is still a thing :) we had many of the same electronic magazines here in Norway as you had in the UK back then.

Hello from Belgium, I build the same powersupply, but used 6 output transistors for an output of 6 amps, still works perfectly!

I build this one in 1982 , modified it to a 0...50V 0....5A and 40 years later it's still my main pover supply with analog metres.😊

It has been very reliable, had only to repair twice during its lifetime and one was my own fault.( Burnt out the sense resistor by using the wrong banana socket)

@JazzyJane_uk I hope you do popular electronics and maybe readio electronics, from me in the usa, it was 2 of my favorites from when I grew up. I know your in the uk, but I hope you read those as well. 😃

Now that's a trip down memory lane, i built their 12v 5amp power supply waaay back in the early eighties, served me very well, managed to leave it behind when i changed jobs, ah well!, look forward to the rest of this series,

Linear variable supply is also going to need a decent heatsink. Also can you find different colour LED displays so maybe voltage can be red and current green
@JazzyJane_uk

Yes, I already have some power transistors mounted on suitable heatsinks that funnily enough actually came out of I think either Farnell or Thandar power supplies. They were bought off eBay just as transistors on heatsinks. I thought they might come in handy one day for a project and sure enough they have. I'll look into different colour LED's but I would also have to get a new piece of filter material for the meter plastic housings as well. Might be possible. Thanks for watching.

It's going to be an interesting project. We will be making a few tweaks to the original project but it will end up being a quite decent bench power supply. Thanks for the sub and thanks for watching.

That does look fun, have axial electrolytics finally gone out of production? it was on the cards late 80's but i was still seeing them from decent brands 6 years ago via digikey and mouser. the snap in caps are a good solution i may have tried to use a radial non snap in type with some heat shrink to keep the same look. it is amazing how small electrlytics have become.

A few people still make them, like Vishay, but they are very expensive. Everything is radial these days when it comes to aluminium electrolytics. I suspect that axial leaded components came about during the days of valves where components were spread across tag strips so needed long leads either end. When printed circuit boards came along it made more sense to use radial components where the tracks of the PCB's were the legs so were not needed on the capacitors and axials started to fade away. Thanks for watching.

Great Idea! For an alternative pcb and kit search '0-30V 2mA-3A DC Regulated Power Supply DIY Kit' from the usual places (YT deletes my comment if I name any?!) It's extremely cheap! Your videos will help with advice on Heatsinks, transformers and hardware as these are not include in this kit. Cheers.

Unfortunately those RED PCB based kits have some flaws and I can not recommend. Electronics dash lab in the community projects you will find improved version of the afore mentioned.

Mr. Harwardt made a modification to the old December 1982 PSU design. This mod brings the abilities up to 0-40V/10A. He provides the the project files incl. schematics , the old pcb foil and a new pcb layout. Search for his name & the subject of this topic. YT blocks even vaguely written pointers to his web site. No good.

@@JazzyJane_uk The creator mentioned the mod improvements being based on French made inventions. Eventually the many passtransistors put in parallel will be adjusted by trimming the value of the base resistors. So the power transistors do not have to be selected in order to make a match. He refers to the old version of his web site too. Even to me being a native german speaker his writing looks a bit unfinished. But last year I had a email conversation with him. If You encounter problems let me know somehow in a way bypassing the YT censorship. Bad.

@@JazzyJane_uk Hi Jane. Had an email convesation with Mr Harwardt today. Conclusion: stick with the original design. 1.Making the Mr.Harwardt modifications needs a lot of changes that does not fit the elektor pcb. 2. Understanding the needed changes and doing the fiddly adjustments on the many power transistor resistor will overload the normal guy. Thx
