Thanks for sharing Chuck. I really like the design of those passenger cars.

Nice fixes! It's a shame that has to be done to brand new engines and tenders. I love the sound of those old pre-war whistles.

You made a good deal Chuck. Beautiful train. It's common to have screws too tight or not there at all. That's life in the modern train hobby.

Beautiful train Chuck. I have one of the prewar versions. One of my favorite sets to run. I usually put it around the Christmas tree to get that nostalgic feeling around the holidays.

I once had a used 1969 Pontiac Firebird that didn't work half of the time, but it sure was a beautiful looking car (if you overlook the fact that it had an Orange Shagg carpet). 🙂

I bought a used Ford 65 Falcon Futura Convertible in 1969. It had the 289 V8. I drove it all over the US and Canada. I took it to a car show 3 years but did not show it. I left it in the parking lot. I got 3 notes under the windshield wiper about what a beautiful car it was and "Please sell me this car," with a phone number. I sold it. At my age, I was having problems with the manual steering and brakes. I got a lot more than I thought the car was worth.

The Streamliners and especially the Blue Streak are favorites of mine. The new "China Streak" looks good, but for me it just doesn't have the same "warm fuzzy" feeling of an 1936 original. You are right about China's lack of quality control. Good that you could tweek the problems and get it running. I like your Hippie trolley. Is it custom painted? The Blue Streak was made 1936 to 38 or so, early drivers have the thin nickel tires, later have thick black tires. The screw mount is not original on the vintage set, it should be a rivet like the China Streak. If your China Streak has a conventional motor and no electronics board, it should run a long time as long as you keep it lubed.

Very snazzy, by the looks and sounds I think they put an open frame universal motor in there, and an electro-mechanical E-Unit. I had somebody's LTI reproduction Hiawatha set from the '80s in for repair work. I think it was made in china too. The quality of the diecast shell wasn't perfect (finish was a little uneven) but the motor looked and ran just like a prewar motor. Even had the old style E-Unit, rather than a reversing board. I did have to change out the brushes though, the originals were garbage. The whistle was a pain, it was a bit stiff. But I got it working ok. When the work was done, I found out the guy didn't actually care about the whistle- felt bad about it but he had no issue compensating me for my time anyway. Beautiful set, would love to own one some day.

I have a friend who owns a hobby store and he tells me that 75% of Lionel locomotives are defective right out of the box. And the prices Lionel is charging for this junk is disgusting. All they are doing is assuring their salaries. They don't know or care about the history behind the name. Your advice is so very true. CHINESE JUNK.

Very sharp looking set. I'm just glad we could introduce China to a little taste of American ingenuity and joy. I bet they are totally confused as to their purpose and reason to exist. How sad would it be to live somewhere without any individual identity or freedom and purpose? No wonder they don't produce any real original innovations. Just no real incentive for individual ideas and competition to excel at being the best. Something I think we are in danger of losing by selling out. Oh well at least they are good at copying our stuff.

Then you missed the old Lionel Blue Streak locomotive that I am restoring from 1936, and my negative comments about crappy trains made in China.
