Beautiful engine and great review! I like everything about it, especially the missing paint job. Looks pretty cool in my opinion.

In 1942 SP wanted to order 14 more of the Daylights, but the War Production Board said no to the idea because of the shortage of metal that the Daylights were using for the skirts, large wheels, and large smokeboxes for the Mars Light. The new order of GS-6 engines were built to the War Production Board's standards. The GS-6 had the all-weather cab like you mentioned, as well as a basic tender (like the GS-4s and GS-5s). The smoke box had one headlight and 73" drivewheels unlike the 80" drivewheels on the GS-3, 4, & 5. In 1943 the first of the GS-6s', 4460 arrived (which is the only other surviving example of an SP 4-8-4 along with 4449). The last 4 of them went to a power-starved Western Pacific and re-classed the engines as GS-64.

I did do a film on one of these Southern Pacific GS-6 models at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. It's the one in Southern Pacific Black and it was pulling a flat car train loaded with cars characters.

Nice locomotive Eric, it looks and sounds great! I liked the view of that engine without the shell, to see the boards and huge motor. I wonder how a compared MTH steam engine's motor is? For the most part Lionel and MTH Diesels have the exact same motors, Lionel having larger flywheels which might be a reason why they're more smooth.

Eric, The purpose of a "General Service" locomotive having an air horn is because for one in the bay area of California all year round in the morning, there is a lot of fog. The horn is more for use of an attention getter and is a fog horn.

I wish there were more model steam locomotives like that Lionel Vision Line model of UP Challenger 3989 you reviewed. I thought it was smarter to move one of the speakers from the tender to the actual engine to localise the chuffing and whistle sounds... : (
