The Santa Fe paint scheme is an absolute stunner, and it paired brilliantly with your UP DD35A! 😍 As a lover of big engines, be it diesel or steam, it was a real treat witnessing those two behemoths running together. Not to mention, those snowplow cars at the end were a sight to behold. Hats off to you for capturing such an impressive and remarkable video! 👌

Hello, Fun fact for you if you have ever been on one of the many DDA40X units the center walkway path between the 2 hoods in real life aren't Actually Connected there is a Gray Rubber divider between both hood tops as most think there connected their Wrong and the Reason behind why they're Not connected is to deal with Stress Flexing when the unit is Amped up in Notches, a Huge tell tell sign of this is the Walkways near the center of the unit are in fact Grilled walkways giving more Flexibility when power is pushed out. Another Fun Fact about the DDA40X is the Brake Wheel which is a Pump Handle Style Brake is located in the Cab behind the Engineer as that's why you don't see any brake wheel outside around the walkways.

TY for doing the comparison to the previous generation! That is simply fantastic information, and I don't know where you'd find it anywhere else. The modern generation of Lionel goes back to the 90s, so many of these engines have 3 if not 4 generations. I'd love to see a full comparison between the current engine, the 10 year, 20, and 30 year variants.

I never saw the dd35, but the last of the dd40X were finishing up when I started. It was crammed back as far as possible in assembly bay and still covered half the walkway down the front. Monsterous but beautiful. I heard UP did not like them because they were hard to turn around.

I relized fully the sheer size of these things with the purchase of a MTH DDA40X back int he PS1 era. I just had to add a dummy unit for effect. But the dummy unit was so heavy, that I bought a _second_ powered unit to help schlep all that dead weight around. If I MU'ed these up with my Big Blow turbine all I'd need would be Tim Allen's trademark grunt to complete the image.

Oh now theirs a great topic for discussion. “SHELF LIFE”! Lionel no problem! MTH BIG problem!! I have a shelf with all the UP Turbines. With the exception of the first VERANDA 18149 all are MTH. While the grey atop Big Blow is cracking it’s the Propane Turbine’s die cast tender. Both trucks are quite literally exploding in slow motion! The chrome is separating from the die cast in a twisting way… how do I get replacement trucks? Today…

I just ordered our first EMD DD. A 2011 Lionel 6-38499 PRR 2383 non powered from Trainz for just $252. Ironically it features legacy control for its smoke output which is odd as it’s non powered for normally the smoke units would just “stream” the smoke instead of being adjustable for non powered units. Also BTW, my MTH U50C’s blow the DD35’s out of the water. GE for the win!

I been waiting on this review for quite some time now, particularly this engine. How did you feel about it’s weight for its size and performance from the previous model? I feel like Lionel didn’t do this magnificent engine justice, better details more metal than plastic and overall I feel like for such a long and large engine it doesn’t have that massive look next to a SD70ACe or my favorite an ES44AC, looks a bit small next to it.

I forgave Lionel for the truck mounted pilot a while ago when I understood how large O stuff is, but I have yet again a large hatred for them now because the step that you flip down to go to another loco is upside down, and usually it's as easy fix but you can't fix it because it's molded in. It's the little things that really get on my nerves, especially things that can cause operating issues because now it will instead of sliding freely ontop of another one, will get stuck on others and mesh like a gear. The pain this company puts me through is immense.

I live in Alaska. There’s no way this unit could ever run on these tight turns that’s on the Alaska Railroad. They couldn’t even run the Two E units back in the 1960s they would derail because of the tight turns. As for the Santa Fe. They didn’t waste there money on these oversized units. I think the wide cab units looked so sharp and were ahead of there time.
