*Notes and corrections: Yes, at the 0:41 mark, that IS a Prewar Lionel City Of Portland streamliner! I could kick myself for overlooking that in the video. Also, the Hiawatha set makes appearances in several variations: 3 passenger cars with "smoke/snow" on the locomotive, 2 cars, and no "smoke/snow", etc. It is likely that over the many hours of shooting, changes needed to be made to keep the Prewar trains operating.*
Episode 124: Over the past four decades, the 1983 film A Christmas Story has transitioned from a box office flop to an American Pop Culture icon. Every holiday season millions of Americans watch and rewatch the adventures and misadventures of young Ralph Parker and his quest for his ultimate Christmas gift - the Red Ryder BB Gun.
Along the way, we revisit memorable scenes and props: The Lamp - I mean - The “Major Award”, the pink bunny suit, the flagpole, the Little Orphan Annie decoder ring, and more.
For me, however, the best part of the film comes in the first few minutes, and the notable prop is the Lionel trains in the department store window with kids' faces pressed against the glass, struggling to get a glimpse of the magic on the other side. THIS is the part of the film where I grab my remote and examine frame-by-frame the trains featured in this scene. So, come along with me as we examine and identify - as best as possible - the trains of A Christmas Story.
In order to maintain a nostalgic feel, the film is intentionally ambiguous regarding the date - providing a general impression that the action takes place SOMETIME between the late 1930s and 1950. Props and dialogue cues throughout the film do not tie the viewer to any specific year, and the trains follow this same pattern. These classic trains help establish the time, the place, and the mood of the film, and it's time to give these props the recognition they deserve!
