Chemi Chemi still looks pretty young - maybe around 7 or so? I didn’t realize the bulls that young would go out on their own. Since, normally bulls stay with their herd until young teens. Glad to see he found a bachelor herd.

At the age of 8 or so, the orphans indulge their desire to be independent by staying out in the bush overnight. It does carry a risk, but the other option is to keep them in cages until they're adults, and that is not feasible.

@@gregmuelrath Oh, absolutely; they must have the choice of freedom and the decision be theirs and theirs, alone, as to when to leave. The wild is fraught with danger, but that is where they still belong and where they want to be. I watched a talk by Dame Daphne and she said there’ve been some who tried it out for a night or two, then came back escorted back by olders, apparently not ready just yet. What astounds me is the communication that obviously takes place of the desire to return to the DSTW compound “until I’m ready”, and then an escort being formed. As far as Chemi Chemi, the way I look at is DSWT’s raising techniques were obviously so awesome that he was prepared to set out on his own when he did.

I am a bit confused...are the orphans left on their own a lot? If so, without adult elephants or human cares there to protect them are they not just a defenseless food source for predators?
@gregmuelrath
Жыл бұрын
Good question, with no easy answer. A gradual release allows the orphans to develop survival skills while still having the keepers nearby if there's a problem. The good news is that more than 90% will reach adulthood. A few will be lost to predators, and a few more, I hate to say this, will be killed by humans.

I agree. Baby Sokotei was killed by lions at that same Ithumba. He was only a 4 year old baby, still on a bottle. SWT didn't even know which day and when he was killed. There is no other organization that has accomplished what SWT has, but a 4 year old defenseless baby was owed better protection and care. And those vicious lions were a known threat. They had viciously attacked other babies. I do not accept "that's just nature".

The lion attack was in August 2018. Chemi Chemi recovered completely and is now living independently in Tsavo East with a bachelor family. The lions have since moved on, and currently there are no predators stalking the young orphans at Ithumba. Thank you for caring.

Hi Chile, Before the orphans become fully independent, they pass through a stage where they are semi-dependent on the keepers while pushing the boundaries of freedom. Like rebellious teenagers, they want to experience independence and learn survivor skills with their friends while exploring the bush. There are risks, of course, for a young elephant to explore the wild without a keeper to protect them. The other option is to keep the orphans in a fenced area until they are 10-years old and then suddenly release them, but that's not practical. More than 90% of the orphans reached adulthood, which is an impressive statistic.

You raise the right question. I was told that Sokotei was alone and killed less than a tenth of a mile away. Where were the keepers? I do not accept that it is reasonable to let a 4 year old baby wander alone at night or during the day, especially these very sheltered innocent babies.

That was also Sheldrick's position, but KWF disagreed. The food chain is part of the natural order, but it was difficult to see the ellies coping with lion-inflicted injuries. The broader tragedy, of course, is that they don't have mums and aunts to protect them and teach them survival skills.

You can’t protect them forever. Release them and let nature take its course. Lions must eat as well.
@faith1222

@Oweary1 oh yeah, why dont you let yourself become food for lions then? you are also part of nature..so let nature takes it course. the lion needs to eat too..you know and I think you are a good snack for those predators. The thing is you have a big mouth because you are not in a situation where you trying to survive against the predators. Its up to those people whom they wanted to protect. They are trying to save as many elephants because their numbers are dropping because of human poaching. How dare you to say that?! Can you say that if a pack of lion is chasing you and those people will say" ah, lion needs to eat too, let nature takes it course". Wont you ask others for help?! you are hypocrite!!!!!!!!!! You only have the right to say that if you are willing to offer your own life, your loved ones lives in order for the predators to eat. I wont mock you, I wont bash you, I will think you are just genuinely concern for the well beings of predators. Saying let nature takes its course while you are staying safe from being eaten!!!! You are nothing but an asshole!!! If not were for humans, they had the herd and a mother who would protect them against predators. So I suggest if you truly know what you are saying, go to a place where there are lions and other predators, and let those predators you loved mauled, devour you. Dont run, do not ask for help, offer yourself, if you have family and friends, and even pets, bring them with you, so predators would have a long lasting supply of food alright. I will give you my salute if you do that.

@@josiecirigliano9134 Noted; We don’t have to agree with one another - you have your opinion as do I. We agree to disagree. What is “absurd” is your spiel regarding “superiority” there’s nothing superior about survival of the fittest and other creatures having to eat. What do you think happens to wounded elephants surviving any predation prior to the DSWT’s existence? The DSWT can’t save every elephant orphan out there. Lions & their cubs have to eat and when selecting elephants, they will be both successful AND unsuccessful.

@@TheHighlanderGirl I meant superiority for human beings like the ones that Always know what to do without being emotionally involved. We all know that we Need to eat to Survive as we are made of organic matter but few know that we are also more than that and we have a Heart that Is alive. That means you'll do anything for the creatures you love wild or not but you won't interfere out there in the fight for survival to take positions there where you are not requested to be. To help all of them means also to make sure all their resources Will Always be available. A Lion can eat if an herbivore can and so on and so forth, then It Is absolutely hipocrisy to worry about a Lion when you have taken away the Land and the food for the others. Why do you care in the First Place? Meditating about this point Is very useful.
