@rollwithtodd

I was thinking the same thing! Very rarely do you see that many male lions together.
@petts1
10 жыл бұрын
rollwithtodd This pride was made up of four brothers. They were all born into the pride and were never kicked out. There was also an uncle and the father in the same pride. Because there were so many males this pride started killing hippos regularly. From what I could see via emails from Governors Camp (where this was shot) they documented at least 11 successful hippo kills.

We figured the same thing when we were at the sighting, and it very well may have been the case that it was old age. What we do know is that this lion pride, the Paradise Pride on the Masai Mara became hippo killing specialists. But they killed them on land. They were only capable of killing hippos because the pride had 5 fully grown male lions in it, which is very rare. One lion pride in Botswana grew so powerful they have been documented killing adolescent elephants. Which is truly amazing!

Crocs can dart at fast speeds. Not on lands. But if that water is deep enough. Crocs have the STRONGEST bite force on the planet right now.1 bite and it rip apart the lion. They are more armored. Of course they lose on land. So its hard to match these creatures up. Best to put them is in shoulder deep or knee deep water. But if a lion is in pure water. Or just shoulder deep. It can attack it. Drag it and deathroll. And its over. They KILL bullsharks. Plus crocs have thick ass hide. Their belly is the only place they can easily but sliced up.

Depends. You can do a safari on all kinds of budgets. You can spend a small fortune, or do it on a smaller budget. The more you spend the better the quality of service and location. Save money by using frequent flier miles for free plane tix, make sure to book during low seasons and you'll get up to 50% off on accommodations, stay near national parks like Kruger in South Africa, and book trips with guides or drive yourself. jproxursoxoff Actually when we arrived at the kill the male lions appeared to have already fed and the crocs were just arriving in mass. This is a great video, thanks for posting. You really capture the fact that after millions of years of evolution, crocodiles are smart enough to back off against a lion. This really shows the difference between an ambush predator and an active predator, and a reptile and mammal predator. The crocs are only interested in confrontation if they can ambush a prey, a lion being a more evolved predator is always supremely confidant.

The Nile crocs the lions face are far bigger than the mugger crocs the tigers face (12 feet is considered large for a mugger), despite what the raving tiger fanboys will tell you. The lions are showing a healthy respect though, and its worth noting that the dominant crocodile is actually having a big effect on the aggression of the smaller ones. The smaller Nile crocs instinctively show less aggression towards each other (and the lions in the case) when the dominant croc is present. Nile crocs are fairly tolerant socially, but the dominant male will severely injure or even kill a smaller croc showing aggression in its presence.

In this case the croc's showed signs of worrying about the lions. Not shown in the video, I shot it, were some instances where the less dominant crocs were inching up around the carcass to try and get some meat and the lions repeatedly chased them back into the water. When they did the crocs ran back to safety. Not to say that the large crocs, we estimate some of them at 15 to 17 feet, would have done the same. But they were happy feasting from the water b/c they had front row seats.

@nguyenb224 When we arrived at the sighting we assumed the hippo died of natural causes. Crocs can't take down a full size hippo and lions don't generally take down hippos as they are so big. However, this pride of lions has or had 6 full grown males, highly unusual. The pride has since become hippo specialists, which is very rare. If you want to know more you can check the game reports at Little Governors camp's website and look for info about the Paradise Pride.

What we know is that this pride of lions was recorded killing hippos on over 10 occasions after this sighting. When we arrived there were far fewer crocs and it appeared that the male lions had already eaten. They went back down to protect their food. Lions were wary of the crocs in the water for sure, but when the crocs came on land the lions chased them right back in. No good footage of that, but we saw that happen. Ultimately, our guide was shocked the lions weren't more scared. I think there was enough to go around and both sides had mutual respect for each others strengths.

James, I shot the video. While we're not sure if the lions killed the hippo, we do know that this lion pride successfully killed over 10 hippos in the following year. So I would be so cavalier and definitive in your statements. It is rare for lions to kill hippos, but this pride of lions had 5 full grown males in it which is also very rare. The larger the pride the bigger animals they can kill. A pride in Savuti was taking down juvenile elephants.

There's plenty of scrapping between them as the lionesses smack down on the croc heads throughout. Also, check the 6 minute mark and you'll see a croc almost take one of the lioness' head off. It is true that there are plenty of moments where they share, but the carcass is pulled back and forth between shore and the shallows. So I believe it is indeed a battle albeit not a non-stop vicious one.
