430 for a traditional knife means it’s likely pretty easy to sharpen - perfect for this type of knife (actually higher than required for 99.99% of users). An excellent result for a fantastic knife.

That was awesome! Spitting your coffee is always a great way to start your morning! Thanks! As for the whole testing "controversy", I don't think there is any controversy, but there seems to be some that oppose it for one weird reason or another. I do Rockwell testing. All it does is tell you how hard something is. It doesn't tell you anything else. The rest of the puzzle has to be figured out with cutting and use. However, that does not mean it is unimportant or irrelevant. Every steel has an optimum range where that steel gives it's best balance of edge retention, stability and toughness. Varying too high, or too low from that range may increase some of those attributes at the expense of others. Although Rockwell testing cannot tell you the quality of the heat treat, it does tell you if it is in that optimal range for a particular steel. If someone is just using HRC numbers to address quality, it's no different than those that dismiss them altogether. Both are foolish positions.

Rockwell testing may be a bit of a red herring but it’s still an easily relatable metric that most of us use to judge steel performance. The rope cut tests you do are a great source of information. Whether we compare the capacity to cut rope or how many fish can be cut before a knife needs to resharpened it’s still all relevant. I buy a knife in a steel like M390 for the wear performance it’s supposed to offer. You don’t buy a V12 supercar and accept a car with an engine only running on 10 cylinders.

Ugh knew this was comming from someone. I like apostlep and even agree with most of what he said. Buttttt he was off base bringing you rope tests into the video since you have said over and over and over NOTHING about what you do is trying to be in any way scientific. Thanks for the content Pete always love your videos.

Absolutely hilarious! Production companies will never be able to match what a small custom maker can do, but that doesn't mean they can't do better than they are doing now.. I think the main problem, is a steel maker comes out with a steel, that is designed to be used in machine tooling, and puts out their ht standards based on that, and cutlery makers just blindly go by those numbers. Machine tooling and cutlery are worlds apart, and you don't need the same toughness to cut soft materials like rope, cardboard, or wood, that you need to stamp and work metal. The first company to realize this and experiment and push the limits, will have a big edge in the marketplace.

Nice folder, but not on my want list. On the subject of the Interwebz and going online; I'm lucky to have been 'online' intermittently since the late 90s. I'm no pioneer, but I dived in back in the days of IRC and Bulletin Boards and 16/33k modems. Back then there was respect among folks, and those that didn't follow etiquette were eloquently Flamed. It was a true Art. You, Pete, have raised the bar in terms of Artistic Flaming. I salute you. As for me, I never go online angry. I go online to chill, and as for KZitem, I don't much follow angry, self-centred people. KZitem is my relaxation place, as is Insta. I don't live at Facebook (I have an account), but I do dive into the mire that is Twitter on a daily basis. ...and now I've rambled again. Finished work early, had a few beers and medicine. I'll wander of mumbling about the good old days now...cheerio...

i am a hobbyist knifemaker and in my experience, rockwell numbers are not that relevant. two knifes with the same rockwell number can have vastly different edge retention. Also in my experience the most important component to edge retention is heat treatement. A propperly treated steel will always outcut a badly treated one. EDIT: especially M390 can be tempered before or behind the secondary hardening in the temper-temperature curve. The former temper will have much better corrosion resistance, but worse wear resistance than the latter.

I was thinking maybe m390 isn't the magic supersteel that everybody thinks it is end of the story. It seems to be closer to a high-end D2, s30v or s35vn. Well and that's okay as long as the manufacturer's don't type it up to be some magic toe-curling steal that will drive you to work and make you a ladies man.
