I'm a pharmacist and this reminds me of my pharmaceutical sciences labs in school. One thing about soap making - be aware of the salt forms you use. Here, Elly used sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as the lye. One can also use potassium hydroxide (KOH). The difference is that sodium will cause soaps to be harder whereas potassium salts will usually result in a liquid form. For example, when making bar soap you want sodium, but if you're making shampoo, you want to use potassium. Just something to keep in mind. Great video. Good job on the visuals and voiceovers. Just the facts, just the process, not a lot of extras that aren't needed. Two thumbs up. 👍👍

remember, the lye water becomes hot. So use a bowl that is ok with heat. Also, WATER goes into the bowl FIRST. the lye is added slowly into the water. Do not splash! Mix slowly. Most likely this was covered in the video you mentioned...but i mention here in case people do not watch the first video! goggles, gloves are a must.

OMG Elly, I'm catching up but you are definitely closer to converting me to making soap one of these days. You've turned me back from using pump bottle detergent soaps to bars I buy from my local Co-op, or at a pinch the health food shop. My hands survive firewood and firemaking, gardening and strange fixings at my elderly mother's place far better using bar soaps - my skin is not dry at all any more. I also scrape my nails on bar soap when I'm gardening so my hands are super easy to clean. This castile soap looks wonderful and might be a good soap to start with (after going to Mitre 10 or Bunnings and getting the safety gear, after watching the safety video. Again). I'll see, as in I really want to, but my time is very bound up with my elderly mother these days. I'm so glad I decided to check on your channel - KZitem is terrible at giving appropriate alerts. As always, just watching you do anything is so zen you need to be bottled! ☺️

I’m almost ready. I’ve watched loads of your videos, some multiple times. Read a couple of books. Almost done collecting supplies. Safety first. This will be the first soap recipe that I make. My plan is to first make soaps for cleaning. I’m attempting to replace Dr. Bronners with this soap. Next, I will make your cleaning bar soap recipe. From there I will make the washing powder to replace Tide pods. My end goal is to make all the soaps my family needs with an eye on economics. I’d like to calculate the costs and potential savings of handmade soaps. Still getting used to the idea of one soap for multiple uses. I wasn’t raised that way. 😊 I purchased the soap shaker. Should come in handy. TY so much for all you do. ❤

Hi Elly, I made this liquid soap yesterday for the first time and went well. I used Cobram Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil and it did get thickened a lot, thicker than those store bought liquid soap for sure! I scented some with combination of Lemongrass, Rosemary and Peppermint and it got thicker than Golden Syrup 😱, so I had to add more water. In a separate bottle I scented it with a fragrance oil and it didn’t get thickened farther. It’s a lovely soap 😍and I think it is a good idea to scent it before you put it in a bottle. You can enjoy few different fragrances from one batch! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and look forward to your next video!! 💕

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking hi Elly! Just to say that I tried an olive/Castor/Sunflower oil combo. After 30mins of blending and stirring it was still like sloppy thin custard. I thought it was headed for the bin but left it on low in the Crockpot and went away to do something else. Half an hour later I went back to it expecting sloppy custard and got paste!!! So, either by adding sunflower oil it must take forever to firm up or my Crockpot can do VooDoo magic? 🤷🤣

Ah that's great to hear! I've never used sunflower but I imagine it's slow to saponify. Using less water in your paste recipe would speed it up, also replacing some of the water with glycerine would zoom it along! Your crock pot does have special powers I think! I always say 'heat and agitation' are the KEYS to getting LS to come together. If you use both of those, it will eventually gel and cook :)

This is exactly what I've been looking for. A simple, pure olive soap. My skin dries up and itches with coconut oil and palm...really sensitive, reactive skin. Contact dermatitis. Olive and Argon work for me. I've been able to buy a cheap oilve soap with very few ingredients that suits my skin, but i want to make my own for more moisturising. Can't be bothered to wait weeks for an olive soap bar to cure, thugh if i make the liquid first, i could use that while bars harden, i expect. I appreciate how you stated that demineralized water can be used. It's a lot cheaper than distilled where i live. You've revived my interest in soap-making. Thank you. Much appreciated. Only seen any of your videos, today, so subbed.

Thank you for this video with a basic castile soap recipe. I was laughing when you said do not scorch your soap, and what did my hubby do? He left the crockpot on high, walked away, and scorched the soap! But it still made a wonderful body wash.

Couple points: 1) very good and concise tutorial. 2) if you’re really concerned about “real” olive oil soap, you need to make sure your using “certified” olive oil, as most olive oils that are “affordable” are usually adulterated with other oils (and very often with old/rancid olive oils).
