Good question! ☝️ By default, the case of the pressure gauge is only 80% to 90% full as the fill fluid will accumulate and expand with additional water depending on humidity and ambient temperature. The incomplete filling thus provides sufficient space for expansion. Feel free to read more about it on our blog: blog.wika.com/products/filling-liquids-pressure-gauges-usage-advantages/

@@WIKAGroup But, the case is sealed, would this not prevent water/humidity from entering the gauge and being absorbed by the glycerin?

@@Orcinus24x5 A case that is fully hermetically sealed is considered as ingress protection IP66/IP67. However, most of our pressure gauges come with ingress protection IP65 as standard and are not hermetically sealed. Hence, water/humidity in small amounts can enter the case. Best regards.

Which liquid inside the gauge..?

Depending on the operating conditions, glycerine-water mixtures or silicone oils are the most frequently used filling liquids. Glycerine-water is suitable for the majority of applications and ambient temperatures. Particularly for low pressure ranges, it makes sense to use it, due to the low density of the liquid and the associated low resistance on the pressure element. Silicone oil is primarily relied upon when the pressure gauge is exposed to particularly high (> +60 °C) or very low (< -20 °C) temperatures.

What Kees the glycerine from mixing into whatever you’re gauge is reading?

To answer that question more easily please have a look at 00:45 Min. There you can see the inner parts of a pressure gauge. The process media is only in the measuring system of the pressure gauge (yellow marked parts) but not in the case itself. So the measuring system itself (mainly the bourdon tube) separates the process media from the filling liquid that is filled into the case. So the process media is inside the bourdon tube and the liquid filling is around.

I need to refill my gauges just a little. I guess it the filling tastes sweet I add some water. Is there a refilling guide?
@WIKAGroup

Usually our gauges are filled with glycerine. However, in this case if only a little is missing, water is ok. Generally our gauges are not completely filled so that in the event of a significant temperature raise and an expansion of the filling fluid the gauges are not leaking. So we recommend a case filling of approx.. 90%. Let us know if you have any further question! 👍
