Have you ever heard of Fado? If you're going to visit Lisbon, Portugal, and you love music or want a cultural experience, then going to a Fado House and listening to the singers is a must for you!
Known worldwide, Fado was recently considered an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. It's a musical style that reflects a large part of Portugal's identity.
The shows are vibrant and touching, even if, like us, you don't understand one word. You can find Fado Shows all around Lisbon. We asked our hotel, The Bairro Alto Hotel, for a recommendation.
We are going to A Severa, Lisbon's oldest Fado House. Since 1955 A Severa is the oldest Fado House in Lisbon that remains in the same family. With three generations it's famous for good food and good Fado. It is one of Lisbon's icons and sang here are the best singers in the history of Fado.
A Severa was outstanding with a warm and comfortable ambiance mixed with the sound of Fado and traditional Portuguese cuisine.
Fado represents to the Portuguese people the art of expressing a state of soul, melancholy or cheer. Lisbon is considered the capital of this cultural movement.
Please note that not all Fado shows include a dinner.
This was an amazing evening! I am very happy that we made time to go and experience something that had deep ties to Portuguese tradition.
