In 1989, the US Navy detected a strange sound in the Pacific Ocean which had a frequency of 52 herz. This is barely appreciable to the human ear.
The Navy sent the tapes to Dr. William Watkins at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. After several months, Dr. Watkins concluded that the strange signal belonged to a whale. However, the curious thing was that this whale sang higher in frequency than most other whale species, which typically sing between 20 and 40 Hz.
The whale's song has been heard every year since 1989 and scientists believe that this individual is completely alone: it has spent its whole life in solitude. Nobody knows if this is the last specimen of its species, or maybe a mutated whale.
The story of the 52 Hz Whale has inspired music, films and documentaries. One of the most popular references to the whale in popular culture is the song "Whalien 52" by the group BTS.
