I watch this every single day and every day something new stands out to me with this story. One thing I’m wondering is, what that Pastor would have done if David and his lawyer friend never went on that plane with him, knowing that it was cloudy all day, knowing that he passes out when flying through clouds, if he would have went up alone, and passed out in the clouds, that would’ve been the end of it. So many different angles to look at the story from, but nonetheless, such a great message, absolutely love it.

Great illustration. But to tell a lie to communicate a truth is unethical. If the pastor presented it as a parable or allegory, that would be one thing. But to tell it as a first hand account is deceptive and manipulative? If it is true, he ought to provide evidence of its veracity. And the pilot who knowingly passes out in clouds but flies solo should be jailed.

I know it is hard to believe a preacher and a lawyer would fabricate a story from the pulpit, but I am disappointed to inform you that Dr. Gibbs has done exactly that. Although difficult to “prove a negative”, I have compiled a list of some obvious baloney in this “listen to the voice” fairy tale. There are at least 2 or 3 versions of Dr. Gibbs’ story on YT, so some of these details are compiled from other versions of his story. My first 3 points include important context, and some personal conjecture about fuel and icing. Point 4 begins the actual baloney. If it's too much for you to read, please at least read #20 and the Summary at the end. Thanks. 1. Dr. Gibbs claims that he was “way out in the Aleutians” in the 1970s on what his description indicates as a Cessna 337 Skymaster. Since it was a court case, we can assume the flight originated in Dutch Harbor, AK as there is no other location fitting his description. Doing a flight from Dutch to Anchorage from this distance on a C337 would take approx. 5 hours and come dangerously close to fuel exhaustion if flown improperly. 2. Fuel details - Assuming this C337 was a new “super” skymaster built in 1971, and the aircraft was flown at lower altitudes as described in the story, the maximum range was 755 NM at 5500 feet. Dutch Harbor to Anchorage is roughly 700 NM. This range assumes correct power setting, fuel/air ratio (mixture), precise and correct manual navigation by Dr. Gibbs, with favorable winds and no icing. Considering Dr. Gibbs claims that he made numerous up/down maneuvers and turns, and had no way of knowing ideal power and mix settings, it’s unlikely that he managed to achieve optimum fuel burn, and his range would have been significantly less. But not impossible. 3. Icing - Also likely a factor, but I had to remove this point to conserve character spaces Here’s where things get sketchy quick: 4. Dr. Gibbs claims that a pastor who is an Alaskan pilot with 20+ years of VFR flying experience chose to depart at dusk for a 5 hr flight and entered the clouds at “150 to 200 feet”. This is laughably unrealistic. This is an illegal action for any pilot without ATC clearance and no VFR pilot would ever WANT to take off into ceilings that low, right before dark. This is likely a death sentence (see point 7) for healthy VFR pilots, and a “mayday” level emergency situation for a qualified vfr pilot. For a pastor/pilot to commit such a suicidal act with a highly respected pastor/lawyer friend on board would be unthinkable. 5. Dr. Gibbs claims that the pilot friend flew into 150-200 foot ceilings with a *known* severe claustrophobic condition that would render him immediately catatonic or unconscious. (In one version Dr. Gibbs describes the pilot as completely passed out, in another he was catatonic and saying “Jesus save us”. Claustrophobia causes panic attacks, not 5 hours of unconsciousness or catatonia.) This is unlikely. The pilot would not have received a medical certificate with this condition, thus we must assume he was flying illegally without a medical with a Christian lawyer/pastor on board! This EXPERIENCED pilot would have easily seen the low ceilings outside and realized that a 5 hour flight to Anchorage, lasting well into the night, and going IFR seconds after departure, would have been suicidal and illegal. No pilot would do this. 6. Dr. Gibbs claims that without any flying experience, he took control of the aircraft moments after departure and flew IFR the entire way to Anchorage at night. Somehow he continued to climb the aircraft, navigated through high mountainous terrain, navigated correctly towards Anchorage, leveled off at a safe altitude, adjusted the throttle back to an appropriate speed, leaned the mixture appropriately, kept the wings level, and managed to maintain all these settings for a grueling 5 hours without hitting any mountains, and without becoming disoriented at any point. The odds of survival for a vfr pilot in this situation is extremely low, but for someone with no flying experience, the odds of survival are ZERO. 7. Point to consider - Studies done by the AOPA and others have demonstrated that a qualified VFR pilot entering these conditions has less than 3 minutes to live. Dr. Gibbs claims he did this “in the 70s” for 5 hours with no flying experience. See: kzitem.info/news/bejne/w22qmn2IZmWehqQ 8. Dr. Gibbs claims that the Air traffic controller stated things like “If you don’t obey my voice you’re going to die” and “Don’t look outside… just trust my voice”. This is not how ATC works nor how this situation would work. ATC would have wanted the pilot to “Aviate, Navigate, Communicate” in that order. Focus on wings-level, then navigate, and as the LOWEST priority, communicate with ATC. 9. Dr. Gibbs claims that the Air Traffic Controller stated “I’m taking you through a pass”. This is absurd for a few reasons. 1. Flying through a pass would block radar and frequency coverage rendering the maneuver impossible. 2. Controllers don’t vector aircraft “through a pass”. This would be illegal. 3. Controller radar display does not have the capability to vector *through* terrain. That’s not a thing. 4. A controller’s priority in this situation is to CLIMB the aircraft to a safe altitude above terrain. Bottom line: Had ATC attempted such egregiously illegal vectoring as described, the controller would have been removed from position immediately, fired, and Dr. Gibbs would not have survived. Its clear that Dr. Gibbs story was inspired by watching ATC in satirical movies like “Airplane” and not an actual real life event. 10. Point to consider- This point added to reply for sake of youtube comment limitations 11. The “voice” - This point added to reply for sake of youtube comment limitations 12. Turns - This point added to reply for sake of youtube comment limitations 13. Dr. Gibbs claims that the controller said “you are flying along a cliff range that is 12,000 ft high”. No such geographical feature exists between the Aleutians and Anchorage. 14. Dr. Gibbs claims that the controller said “how you got through the canyons, we don’t know”. There are no “canyons” per se along this route and if Dr Gibbs was flying below terrain there would be no radar coverage and no way for ATC to see him. There is simply no possible way any of this ATC dialogue happened whatsoever. It’s very clear it was a fabricated conversation. 15. Dr. Gibbs claims that he “broke out” below 100 ft at Anchorage and landed the plane. This means ATC allowed a passenger to fly 5 hours to a socked-in completely IMC airport without ever attempting to direct him to an airport along his route with higher ceilings. Ceilings of 100ft would have also been far below landing minimums for any aircraft in the 1970s and ATC would not have done this. This is entirely inconceivable and would be the most egregious piece of air traffic controlling in the history of the FAA. There is no possible way ATC would NOT have directed him to a closer, or more VFR airport to land immediately. 16. “Crash and Burn” - This point added to reply for sake of youtube comment limitations 17. A knock at the door - This point added to reply for sake of youtube comment limitations 18. Lighted cross - This point added to reply for sake of youtube comment limitations 19. Night-time freighters - This point added to reply for sake of youtube comment limitations 20. There is no NTSB report on this event. There are no FAA records of this event. This event included an incapacitated pilot, air traffic controllers guiding a VFR flight through IMC, truly bizarre ATC transmissions, and extensive damage to the aircraft, runway lights, and a building. (According to Dr. Gibbs, he “took out a row of landing lights and *nudged* a building upon landing… also nearly impossible based on the airport layout). This event would have triggered massive media and NTSB interest and years of investigations and interviews. Summary: Dr. Gibbs “listen to the voice” story is fabricated. There is no record of this flight despite the remarkable events which are alleged to have occurred including an incapacitated pilot, bizarre ATC instructions, and aircraft damage. The NTSB investigates everything. This would have topped the list and triggered the top echelon of NTSB investigators and received extensive media attention. Each version of his story contains factual contradictions from the other. The dialogue with ATC is contrived and unauthentic and demonstrates a lack of knowledge of how this event actually would have been handled. Based on the description of events, the flight would have been out of radar and frequency ranges for nearly the entire flight. The premise of a non-pilot successfully flying at least 5 hours, from climb-out to landing, with some of the world’s most complicated weather and terrain, in a complex multi-engine aircraft, in complete IFR/IMC and darkness is not possible or realistic. This has been proven over and over. (see point 7 above) Dr. Gibbs fabricated an entire dreamed-up story where the air traffic controller is the voice of God and between God and Dr. Gibbs they save the day and land the plane with a host of pilots cheering them on and praising God in their cockpits. Many details of the story sound like Dr. Gibbs watched the movie “Airplane” and didn’t realize it was satire. This story didn’t happen, and as a Christian, I am embarrassed and disappointed by this tall tale from one of our own.
@rinkrascals

Here are the points that wouldn't fit above: (Point #10) A VFR pilot encountering IMC is one of the most critical emergencies for a pilot. An air traffic controller is trained to do the following when presented with this situation: Climb the aircraft to a safe altitude above terrain, do not issue turns until the aircraft is above terrain and established in wings-level flight. LAND THE AIRCRAFT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. (Never 5 hours to an airport with 100 ft ceilings. That is unthinkable) Never overload the pilot with information, and certainly not superfluous extemporaneous conversations or scaring the pilot to death by telling him he’s going to die or “you almost hit a mountain”. Ultimately the PILOT, not the controller, is responsible for the aircraft. Controllers don’t fly the plane. Dr. Gibbs description of ATC is literally the opposite of what ATC does. (Point #11) Dr. Gibbs claims that the “voice” was with him on the radio the entire time, presumably beginning “way out in the Aleutians” but at a minimum for 2 hours (the only time period he mentions in the story being with the controller). This would also be false. A flight from the Aleutians to Anchorage would involve multiple radio frequencies and multiple controllers. The first controller would have been at Anchorage ARTCC which is physically located about 15 miles from the actual airport. A tower and/or TRACON controller would have then worked the flight to the runway. (Point #12) Dr. Gibbs claims that ATC instructed him to make “a right hand turn, then a left hand turn…” (5 total turns). This is the ONLY nuanced bit of ATC that Dr. Gibbs gets sort-of correct. This would have been a common method of radar-identifying an aircraft NOT in distress with no transponder at this time. However, he states Anchorage ATC “was looking for him” and presumably was aware of the situation. Although possible, it would have been a mistake to ask a passenger with no experience flying IFR in the dark to make any, let alone 5 radar-identifying turns right off the bat like this. The likelihood of disorientation and vertigo is extremely high even in level flight, and although possible, only a very poor controller would have done this to him. (Point #16) Dr. Gibbs claims that the controller told him over the radio “I watch them crash and burn all the time because they wont listen to my voice… but they get the voices in their head and they kill themselves”. Air traffic controllers know the moment there is an emergency, every word they say is recorded and will be scrutinized after the fact for proper, legal phraseology. They realize if the plane crashes, the recording could be played over and over in court in front of lawyers, judges, and victims’ families. They choose words very carefully in these situations. This is the type of dialogue someone with no flying or ATC knowledge would fabricate. Besides, pilots don’t “crash and burn all the time” because of “voices in their head” or because they didn’t trust the controller. All of this is nonsense. (Point #17) Dr. Gibbs claims that at “4 in the morning” “the voice” knocked on his door and said “hello David”. (In another rendition, Dr Gibbs claims it was 10am) This is also nearly an impossible event. Air traffic controllers would not have been privy to name or hotel information and to contact a pilot or passenger at 4am would be interfering with an official NTSB federal investigation. It would have been so obviously inappropriate that no controller would do such a thing and potentially risk not only their job but legal action. (Point #18) Gibbs claims that the controller told him to look for “a cross”. He claims upon landing that “Boom! Up came these lights and it was a white cross”. It’s unlikely that a controller would have said something so misleading as “look for white lights in the shape of a cross” since a “lighted white cross, or X” indicates the runway is closed. I suppose in some cases you could see certain approach lights looking cross-like but it would take quite the wild imagination to see it that way. (Point #19) As a point of exaggeration at best, Dr. Gibbs describes ATC freezing all traffic, and implies that the skies were filled with “night time freighters”. True, Anchorage is a cargo hub, but in reality, the majority of Anchorage cargo traffic occurs late morning to mid afternoon so that cargo hubs like Louisville and Memphis are actually the ones busy late at night. Not Anchorage. Nighttime winter traffic is extremely slow in Anchorage.

It’s a shame you’ve had to go to these lengths to show all of the reasonable doubt of this having ever actually happened because it’s really common sense that this is a fabrication. That so much of his story is really ludicrous. It’s a shame you have to convince Christians that it’s completely inappropriate for a pastor to lie from the pulpit or ever. It’s a shame people will tolerate a lying pastor because his fabricated story that he claimed as true, not fiction, made them feel good. That they don’t even care that he’s lied with this story time and again. It’s a shame a pastor thinks he has to tell a huge lie to express the goodness of God. It’s a shame Christians defend lying pastors. Lying from the pulpit is a red flag of a narcissist. A pastor who lies from the pulpit will also lie to your face. Thank you for your time and expertise to expose Dr. Gibbs. We shouldn’t tolerate lies from a pulpit using God’s name and character. He would never want that, even if it evokes powerful emotions.

Exactly... they reject it as nonsense (because the preacher tells made-up crazy stories all the time, why is this different?) and jump headlong into godless secularism and atheism. I reviewed the story, did some research on David Gibbs & I’ve come to the conclusion that there is, in fact, no real reason to doubt the validity of the story in the first place. I don’t know nearly enough about him to say that with absolute certainty, there really isn’t much research in existence other than people like you saying that it “can’t be real” with absolutely no foundation upon which to base that statement.

I was on a mountain in NC . I came out of grandfather mt. My son was with me. A man's voice says don't get in the car. I told my son don't get in car. He didn't . But I was in car. My car went over speed bump. I started going down the mountain. Not the road . Bear den below . My car came to stop. A boulder stopped me by grabbing my gas line but it didn't leak. Angels came to my rescue in form of humans. My car was a mess . But I did drive it home to nj

The other issue is in going through FAA records I could find no reference to this at least in a cursory search. Someone is not being truthful. If a passenger took over, and it does happen at times, this would make the news as it did recently with an incident within the past 2 months in Florida and it made national news.

Thank you for your comments. I agree with everything you said. I talked with a pilot friend of mine, and he basically said the same things you did in your other post. I also could find nothing about the emergency landing online, other than these videos. I found at least one other version of this story on KZitem. It is part of a longer "sermon." The first 16 minutes he tells a different story about a flight on an airplane. Then at about the 17 minute mark he starts the "Listen to the Voice" story, which is about 20 minutes long this time, so he fills in additional, and sometimes contradictory, information. Very little Scripture given at all. It was very much like a show from a comedian, with dramatic "near tears/emotional" moments tossed in at important times. Unfortunately, it appears this fraudulent video is going viral in the Christian community. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sHh7sWids6yhmKQ

I too am a skeptic. Great sermon illustration, but I can’t help but question it’s veracity. A pilot who knows he passes out in clouds (weird by itself) would be wickedly negligent to offer a ride to anyone ever, but especially without a copilot. There should be another lawsuit if it were true.

@@julierichens4218speaking as a pilot, this is most certainly a parable. Aviation is well documented ever since its inception, and a talk-down landing through IMC would definitely be something the NTSB would investigate, even in the 70s. I'd love to be proven wrong though, if you could give an NTSB report cite, or even an aircraft N-number. Also, it seemed like the visibility was poor to the ground, since he had to aquire the approach lighting system before he had visual of the landing enviroment, implying a visual appoach was impossible. He would have had to either activate the LNAV/LPV on the GPS, or tune the ILS frequency for the runway, while being in IMC and disoriented to even get close, and even then, he would have to interpret a glideslope-localizer indicator which is not intuitive. Remember that a private pilot will on average survive 3 minutes in instrument conditions like cloud before suffering a fatal attitude upset.

Fortunately not. I say fortunately, because flying into IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) like cloud is possible the single most stupid thing an untrained pilot could do. A private pilot will live on average 3 minutes in cloud, even less for an untrained passenger. Its a parable. I take it those are a big thing in Christianity; a metaphor to strength your toes to god. Its not real though, as aviation is well-documented, and you would find an incident report by the NTSB in a case like this.

Wow. I don’t know what to say. While this a beautiful analogy and we absolutely should listen to God’s voice, the truth is unless this pastor said, “Imagine with me,” he’s flat out lying to his congregation from his pulpit. It’s wrong even if it’s a good story or says something important about God. I was in a situation with my former pastor where he offered to tell a narrative to the church body that was about me and would serve in my favor, but it was a lie. I insisted on the truth. I was devastated to learn my pastor was willing to lie to his congregation even if he thought the reason was good. Jesus is truth and light. I sure hope this guy told his congregation he was going to share a parable. Otherwise he showed them he’s capable of lying elaborately. We listen to these pastors to speak truth to us. Instead, we’re willing to tolerate him lying to tell us a fake story as his truth so we have all the good feels. We’re Christians, not church consumers. A pastor that lies, lies.

@@rinkrascals As I read your comments and others from professionals, I still believe he’s lying. Evoking emotions with lies and using God’s name is unacceptable and wolf like to me. As I said before, a pastor who lies, lies, even doubling down with more lies. If this is true, there’s evidence, so now that he’s been challenged, why not show the evidence to defend his credibility? Why? Because he knows people will settle for an emotional story even if a pastor has to lie about it. That’s sad. There’s plenty of truth that declares the goodness of God without embellishments and lies which typically put the storyteller in highlights. I don’t want a pastor I know would lie to me. @@AMoore-rg5oeyou may mean the Approach Lighting System, which is only ever found at major airports. Anchorage uses ALSF2 lights, which can look superficially like a cross. This implies that visibility was heavily restricted below 100 feet though, which would have necessitated some form of approach guidance above vecors, like an ILS or LNAV/LPV, which I feel as though he wouldnt have been able to tune into while in cloud, since restricted visibility causes severe disorientation, to such an extent that it kills even some experienced pilots. Imagine flying, not seeing anything outside, hearing that there is a mountain ahead, being given vecors, and seaching for your heading indicator as the airspeed fluctuates wildly, feeling as though the aircraft is tumbling, and then having to load a precision approach in your radio or GPS, and then needing to follow an unintuitive VOR/ILS indicator until you can see the approach light. Remember, this is all without any flying experience, and without the charts that experienced Instrument Rated pilots require to aquire the field. You would need a moses-level miracle to make that work out.

As a pilot this is unfortunate, this is bogus at least in its telling. A friend sent this to me a week ago. The story is certainly well-intentioned and perhaps true in parts but NO pilot, responsible or not responsible, would head into a cloud base without an IFR certificate/rating and if he did it knowingly and has vertigo or medical conditions the FAA would pull his license as he would not be medically fit to fly as he would kill himself or passengers. FAA would FINE him big time. I like the premise of the story BUT telling a Biblical truth/concept and starting it with a lie I find reprehensible.
