Imagine being 19 and hearing Sober on MTV, going out and buying this album and hearing it for the first time. Tool changed my brain chemistry with this sonic journey and nothing has ever been able to top it. 31 years later I can still listen to this album start to finish.

My favorite Tool album? Always the one I'm listening to. I keep thinking "yeah this MUST be their best"... until I hear one of the others again. What a completely flawless catalogue!!

I really enjoy those little bits on this record such as the middle/ 2nd half of swamp song that gave us a little glimpse of what was to come

While I do enjoy what Tool became, there's a part of me (the grunge loving fan who grew up in the 90's) who always wished they kept more the grunge elements of this album.

I remember when this album came out when I was a kid. This was like an awakening and I would lie in my bed and listen to this album on repeat. I think it scared my parents a little. I love the hidden tracks on this album as well.

I love that they now have music for any mood. Some days, I blast Undertow at max volume, some days I play the holy trinity and some days I have Tempest on while I work. Just depends

Love your vinyl listening videos! May I suggest the latest album from Transatlantic, The Absolute Universe? It came out in a long (Forevermore, green) version and a short (The Breath Of Life, purple) version. Thank you, keep it up!!!

I can hear the grunge elements in this album but there's also the pointers towards the more prog-metal direction that they took thereafter. I don't know if its ever been acknowledged but I see that Soundgarden's Superunknown came out the year after this and I suspect that they were themselves influenced by Undertow. Maybe, maybe not! PS. Thanks for the shout-out for my previous post in this vid.👍

Hi Jim, not sure if you’re aware of Tool’s live EP Salival, released in 2000. Includes an extraordinary cover of Led Zeppelin’s No Quarter… which is worth a reaction on its own.

I've tried any number of times to rank their albums and songs. It's an impossible task for me. I lean most heavily towards Lateralus, but on any given day I may choose one of the other four instead.

For me, Lateralus is untouchable as No.1 TOOL album. Their Magnum Opus. It’s then a question of what follows and Aenima is usually up there.

When I was living in Taiwan a friend made me a tape of Green Day's Dookie. He put this on the other side. Green Day was fine, but this really got to me. Nothing like blasting this while riding a motorcycle, raging against the Taiwan traffic. Another friend described it as the playlist for your next suicide.

Yes, but I think the fact that Tom morello from RATM is part of audioslave does hint that this album and audio slave have shared elements. Morello and Tool at this time are certainly friends and Adam definitely liked what morello was playing.

Soundgarden and Tool would be same time period, but Audioslave definitely didn’t influence Tool, maybe the other way around seeing as Tom and Adam are long time friends and the members know each other well.

The band Avenged Sevenfold reached the same mastery of their craft. If I could suggest you listen to an entire Avenged Sevenfold Album. They have many amazing masterpieces, they just released a new album last year called Life is But a Dream. But for me if you did decide on an album check out Nightmare. The drummer on that album is Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater. The bands drummer died in 2009 and Mike stepped up to play on the album
