Litchi (Family: Sapindaceae; Litchi chinensis Sonn.)
The litchi (or lychee) fruit is native to China and is extensively cultivated in warm tropical climates of Malaysia, Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Taiwan, and Japan. The fruits are similar to longan, with the edible part being the translucent aril, which are juicy and sweet to sour in taste. The pericarp is green when unripe and pink when ripe. The fruits are rich in phytochemicals, minerals, and dietary fiber. Litchi fruits are used by Chinese as a traditional remedy for a healthier heart, liver, and spleen.
Antioxidant activities in seeds are also reported. The seeds of litchi (semen litchi) are used to treat neuralgic pain. The pulp of litchi contains antioxidant compounds such as glycosides of quercetin and kaempferol. The pericarp encompasses antioxidant compounds (phenolic compounds, tannins, and anthocyanins) that exhibited high free-radical scavenging activity against DPPH radicals, superoxide anions, and hydroxyl radicals. In addition, the pericarp is reported to strongly hinder linoleic acid oxidation and show activity against hepatocellular carcinoma and fat oxidation. The presence of free, bound, and total phenolics and total flavonoids has been reported.
In Table 1, some reports highlighting the bioconstituents identified in selected tropical fruits are depicted.
