Hi there. You might want to check with your battery supplier regarding the short circuit current available from 3 of their batteries in parallel. The ANL fuses that you appear to have used are only rated for 6000 amps of short circuit. Beyond that their behaviour is unknown and could result in damage. Upgrading to Class T fuses which are rated for 20000 amps may be the solution, but this should be based on information from your battery supplier.

Very well done! I have lived happily with Lithium for year & half 12 volt system 500 amps LPO4s My only concern with drop ins is if nearby or direct lightening hit I would imagine the internal BMS in each drop in may or most likely fail possibly leaving you without any power. My BMSs are external and I could bypass them easily and with close eye on the batteries I could live without them in a pinch. The other concern is how survivable is Lithium with direct lightening hit from what I have read lead acid batteries seem to fair pretty well but have not come across any real world info regarding survive ability my guess is they survive pretty well given the number off grid installations it would have been mentioned otherwise. I love your channel and your concern for nature. Keep up what you are doing you are a pleasure to watch.
@sailaway01
3 жыл бұрын
@@charonstyxferryman I agree 100% with everything you said and I use AGM as house buffer for simple reason if while engine is running and BMS fails or goes open to protect LPO4s for some reason such over charging do to failed charge controller many people do not consider that diodes will blow in Bridge rectifier in alternator of course there are other ways to deal with this problem. As for me I have three battery banks of LPO4s and three external BMSs all with blue tooth so I can monitor health and balance of each cell. BTW I think some drop-ins have Bluetooth BMS so at least you can if you wish to see the health of all sells. Most drop ins are not made to come apart so getting at BMS can mean ripping them open and external BMS is good idea but many people do want to complicate their life. When I built my system not much information around compared to today. BTW again whether internal or external BMSs my guess is lightening strike will cause global damage to all BMSs in system so person should understand how to survive without BMS if LPO4s survive and that is the question as I said I suspect they will but from old electrical engineer I am thinking BMSs will be toast. Lots of things happening with battery technology my guess LPOs will be replaced with something much better in five years. check prof John Goodenough Nobel prize winner for Lithium batteries and now his work on solid state batteries.

Not sure your doing any higher current work over longer periods. Two things I would recommend. 1, a "clamp" meter, capable of reading high DC currents without any connections. A "clamp" wraps around the possibly large wire, and you can read the current thanks to an effect called the "hall effect". I would get the 45 dollar version. Then, the only other thing I would get, which is a way to check to see if you have any bad connections which are heating up, or batteries which are overheating, or check motor temps, is a thermal temp meter , you point it at the item , pull the trigger, and read the temp. Bad connections get hot. Its a great way to check your system, and check other mechanical things .
@hyperchannel4048
3 жыл бұрын
The DC ClampMeter's based on the "hall effect" are too easy to destroy by too high amps or to high magnetic fields. Do not invest in that! A thermal imaging tool are a better joice to invest. Smething like "Seek Thermal RevealPRO Fast Frame". ClampMeter's are for AC a good joice. The DC function will be irretrievable discalibrated very soon.
@californiakayaker
3 жыл бұрын
@@hyperchannel4048 Perhaps your buying the wrong brands, I have not had any problems. Both of the above items have worked fine for years. My first clamp meter, from about 10 years ago, was AC. Technology is advancing and I'd find a good adviser. DC clamp meters work fine except when your inside a nuclear power system. lol
@hyperchannel4048

Has nothing to do with the brand. There is no stable hall sensor on the market. Always check the readings.
@californiakayaker
2 жыл бұрын
@@hyperchannel4048 I have compared the readings to actual DC meters with a shunt. They are very close. You say many things against this technology, talking about instability, but providing nothing other than you statements. Electrical engineers want more information, rather than unsubstantiated statements. My calibration strategy has erased any suspicious feeling about its accuracy. My AC/DC meter is also a True RMS meter. I value measurements over feelings and suspicions, always have. I have used calibration standards all of my life. That said, if I find I am in an unstable environment for the hall sensor, such as perhaps an area with high level RF fields, it is easy to tell that. Use it, you will find it has advantages, especially on a sail boat with the typical lack of Grid Power lines around. A perfect spot. Also, one can set up a fairly accurate current in a circuit and check a DC clamp meter quickly. On a boat, one could have one always ready, and mounted somewhere, hooked up and using a simple switch. Your statements are extremely easy to prove or disprove. Why don't you do a video trying to illustrate what you are saying ? Major meter companies would disagree with your statements and some provide compelling arguments, like FLUKE and the safety argument. kzitem.info/news/bejne/z2qrtJ6rfJ17ZWk You can apparently purchase a Fluke Clamp Meter capable of safely measuring high currents for around $60 dollars. With Panels, I've found that with a bunch of panels, 40v MPPT types very commonly used these days, wired in Parallel, one might want to verify an individual panel for current being provided. Simply clamp around the wire from that particular panel and WALA, you now know what that panel is providing. Each panel can be measured individually, and then all of them together. Without actually making physical contact which causes safety issues according to FLUKE. DC Clamp meters are huge game changers as you can now safely measure current !
@hyperchannel4048
2 жыл бұрын
For making life saving decisions in a rough enviroment and in emergency cases I would never trust a DC Clampmeter. Every electrical engineer knows that it is more complicated to detect a static magnetic field than a induction from an alternating current. But every one can make his own experiences. I claim that for the average consumer a DC Clampmeter is money thrown out the window.

Congratulations on your new setup! I just switched over to lithium from AGM and I forgot just how heavy those old batteries were. With six batteries, I basically cut the weight of the battery bank by 111.3 kilos (245lbs). Short of the new batteries, I think the biggest game changer is having the 12V>12V charger. No need for a separate generator, just run the engine for a bit to charge your batteries if the weather turns nasty.

3x100ah is ok, but I would still go for more, to cover cloudy days. Plus remember, especially at sea, your solar panels will rarely be at an ideal position relative to the sun. Personally my goal is 600+w of solar, with 500ah battery capacity - although I have half that now, I'll need that if I want to install a fridge, which I do. Although to be fair, with lithium batteries 300ah is probably about right.
@WhiteSpotPirates

Oh gees, for me that’s way over the top With 500 amp/h Lithium. Even on extremely cloudy days (2-3 in a row), I never once went below 40% battery capacity. Not sure what you do on your boat 😂. I have 400w solar plus 240w on deck that I will mount on the railing plus 100w flex panel. Even on cloudy days I have been making around 10amp/h which is enough to run the fridge and some phone and computer. To me personally, 300 amp/ h is pure LUXURY, I even can run my water maker on solar at says with full batteries and sun. Could not ask for more. But everybody has their own ideas and systems...

No idea what laptop you are using, but Lenovo has a decent 12V charger for it's current models that have the usb-c charging plug, takes the need for an inverter out of the game (and also gets rid of a bunch of power loss that inverting to 220v and back does). The charger costs almost nothing compared to an inverter either. That's the setup that i opted in for on my tiny sailboat.
