The 35 ah xs power lithium your talkiing about, does that have a bms (battery management system, for those who don't know) built in? How do you manage charging them with the alternator without one? If you wire those up in series to 13.8 and then direct connect that to the alternator, your going to get a very angry lithium fire (by angry I mean lithium batteries heat when charged, and can easily ea5ch that run away temperature if you charge it faster than the c rating, and a car alternator charges eat faster than 10c rated battery) so do you use a charge controller? And Eddy chose that chemistry of lithium? Why not lifep04? Each lifep04 cell is 3.8 volts so 14.6 volts with 4 cells is easier to manage than 5 at 2.8 and lifep04 in the market come assembled with a bms that has over charge protection, thermal protection, and cell balancing, and charge/discharge protection. Xs power lithium has none of that and that bms is at the least $100 and you have to be insane to put that kind of lithium bomb in your car, (I say bomb became lithium when charging and discharging builds pressure and heat, and a lithium cell that's is charged to fast but only exploded, but the lithium in contact with oxygen will explosively ignite into a fire ball, and if you add water the for just gets hotter, a lithium fire is no joke, I've seen it on small 14.8v 1.2amp batteries they burn through concrete and you can't smother it, you put sand in it, you will get a glass cover once it stops burning, you step on it, the hit lithium will adhear to your shoe, s 18650 battery over charged will explode into liquid metal shrapnel and a 8ft fireball, yes it'sa bet short burn, but it can cause a chain reaction, next to your system? By your gas tank.. please how about a safely video explaining the dangers of lithium in your car and how to avoid them, this video got a lot of people excited to go out and buy lithium but without the knowledge of safety how many car fires will happen from ignorance?

The biggest advantage super/ultracapacitors have over lead or lithium (aside from cycle life) is the internal resistance at very low temperature. This means that the performance of these capacitors at -30C is almost as good as 20C. A lead or lithium battery at that low temperature is pretty much useless. Also keep in mind that the long term charge voltage of these capacitors needs to be lowered with temperature (typically 0.2V for every 10C over 20C. So a 2.7V capacitor should be charged to 2.5V at 30C, 2.3V at 40C…….etc

you know what i would love to see? a build up video like stages in a video game. Ok hear me out on this. take a single 40ah bank and put said 20k amp on it. put a clamp maybe an smd amp meter at peak hold whatever and let us see how far you can get into the volume before saaaay 13v? as well as show us current pulled and how much wattage it put out. next add a single bank of caps and repeat. add a 2nd bank of caps so we can see the benefit and recharge speed change, repeat. then remove the caps but add another bank of yinlong so 80ah, repeat. next add a single bank of caps back, repeat. Yes im very much so aware that in a car an alt will be charging this but at the absolute very least it will give us a ball park to work with which is where a simple "results may very" comes in. edit: after watching the very end of the video i see we're on the same page lol, ive been itching to see a video like that granted i didnt think of doing single banks at a time for a modular configuration i was thinking more so of like a 10 bank bus bar and putting in a single bank in diagonally but still in the correct spots and then as i buy more sets of 6 i would adjust it to put the banks in say a V-ish shape? then 3rd bank ill change it so ive filled both ends and the middle then just fill it out from there.

I purchased 6 LTO cells through your site and also caps from you as well. Only installed LTO so far and want to give my opinion. for all the guys talking agm, you can put 4 100a/h AGM truck batteries, big o' heavy bricks, together in parallel and won't come close to what 6 LTO cells can do. can provide the video of this very expiriment, although its in russian. The power LTO makes will blow you away. No agm, nothing under the hood, just those 6 cells in the trunk will run your car and run 3k watt system like you never though it could. now to the negative. it blew my trunk all out of wack, my $600 singer 350 amp alternator took a shit, my American Bass XFLs keep burning the coils and the orion XTR 2500d amp keeps on overheating. LTO will give you the power, the load, i promise you. can the rest of your system handle it? now the question to our fearless leader. would installing the caps in parallel with LTO smooth out the crazy power LTO demands and gives out. killing alternators and amps on the way? i assume answer is yes. please explain the wiring. from alternator "+" goes to LTO bank"+" then "+" on capsitors. The"-" grounds at LTO by going to the frame and then goes to "-" of caps. then amp + and - go to caps + and -, question: Do you need to ground the cap? The LTO is grounded mind you. next question" do the amps negative just go to capasitors negative or the frame? Guys get LTO, its the shit, real talk, but know it will be just a begining

The C rating means how fast you can get the electrons in/out of the battery and is a function of the capacity. If you have a 35 AH battery like he does here and say it's 10C then the max discharge rate is 10x 35 = 350A. Any more and you risk damaging the cells. Early on in the video it's like he doesn't understand it but then he gets it right later on.

if you add a resistor between the super caps and the batterie you will make sure the cap doesn't ask too much of the batteries when it's drained and recharging for car audio applications you don't need a resistor but for solar if you don't separate them you will destroy the batteries over time, the trick is to reduce the battery output to regulate it so the caps do all the work, and by letting go heavy load with a timer to regain with the efficiency of slower regulated charging lookup my services. I will make new videos soon. I am working on the blender models. p.s time is energy... pulsing the cap you can play with power if you can wait 10 sec you can get 10x more out. this ration applies to low input when energy is transferred accordingly with time of use.

I have a question why all 6 cells are actually built into the car Yinlong indicates a charge overcut at 2.9v per cell. which means that 14.5V is possible with 5 cells. Your statement at 13:10 mark isn't correct. If you draw 35a from a battery and it last 10h, that does not mean its a 35ah battery with a 10c rating. It means its a 350ah battery and not a 35ah battery. That should be common sense yes? If you draw 35a from a 35ah battery for 1h and then its empty. Then you have a 1c rated 35ah battery. Minium If you draw 350a from a 35ah battery, and it last 6min and is empty. That means you have a battery that is 10c rated minium. It can handle capacity(35ah)*10 in sustained load. If your equation was correct then a 12v 10ah lipo rated 100c would contain 1000ah, over 12kilowatt and fit in a RC car. A 100ah battery with a 0,25 c rating means it has 100ah but your battery can only deliver 100ah(c) * c-rating)0,25 or 25ah for 4h = 100ah to reach 100ah. Now a battery at 100ah with a c rating of 0,25 might support drawing 100a, but its outside spec for capacity 100ah so you trade effeciency for A. Effeciency is what was giving you 100ah. In that case, you draw 100a from a 100ah battery and its empty after 36min. You lost 40% capacity. This is true for most if not all lead acid and to a smaller degree lithium. You may get more of the stored energy out of a battery if the draw is low also if temp is high, about 40celcious. The battery above might deliver 104ah if you just empty it at 0,02c or 2a load instead of its max rated 0,25c or 25a load.

The real reason why the manufacturer is Yinlong is that Yinlong produced a lot in few years ago but couldn't sell them and disassembled from their unsold E-bus a lot, so they had a lot of LTO cells in stock, so they sold to dealers and came to an agreement to say they were partners.

I believe that your understanding of “C” Rating is incorrect. A 35A Ahr cell, has a “C” rating of 35Ahr. Now, the next thing the manufacturer will tell you is what current the test was conducted at, let’s say C/10 or 3.5 Amps. If you discharge the cell at a higher Amperage, it will give you a lower Ahr rating. This is due to losses associated with the cells internal resistance

EDIT: Check this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/sqJ6ymegpJWpooY When supercaps appeared I wanted to know how they worked and found only one very low res but good explanation by a guy on his balcony with a white board. Supercaps are not regular capacitors - if you do a frequency response it will behave as an open circuit in high frequencies. The guy told that the supercap is like a very thin Li-ion battery rolled into a cylinder. Since it's thin the charge carrier (the ion of Li) can go from one side to the other very quickly. This is obviously an oversimplified oversimplification. If your idea is to apply it to car audio then I believe you'll get puchier bass - not stronger low frequency but on a slap bass line, for instance, the high energy attack will sound better - that's why bass players use bass amps and not guitar amps.

Your description of C rating is incorrect. C rating is the ability of the battery to put out current. C rating times ah gives continuous current draw without dropping below a certain voltage. A 35 ah battery will not last 10 hours on a 35 amp load. It will last about an hour, because that is the capacity of the battery. But a 35 ah battery with a 10c rating has the ability to continuously discharge at 350 amps. 35x10= 350. So it should be capable of putting out 350 amps continuously for about 6 minutes before it drops to it's minimum safe voltage, because when you discharge at 10 times the total capacity, it will last about a tenth of an hour. C rating is actually determined by how much heat is created in the battery in conjunction with voltage drop. You can exceed the recommended continuous discharge with a lithium battery, and it will keep up quite well. The problem is that when you exceed the ratings, the chances of the battery going into thermal runaway increase substantially, and that's when the battery pretty violently explodes. Different chemistries have different pros and cons. Lipos, I believe, tend to have the most energy density, but are most likely to catch fire from abuse. While lifepo4 tends to have quite a bit lower density, but typically has a next to nothing chance of fire. They have been shown to still work even after being punctured and are much more accommodating to float charging in a car. The lithium battery in this video, I believe, falls somewhere in between, but probably closer to what lifepo4's are capable of. I have an 8000mah lipo battery for one of my rc cars that has a 100c rating. So since 8000 mAh is the equivalent of 8 amps, it has the ability to discharge continuously at 800 amps which would take all of about 6 seconds, basically a dead short. Or so it is claimed anyhow. Never tested it to find out. Lipo fires are not my idea of a good time.

There are quite a few errors in this video. To start, ESR is equivalent series resistance, not electrostatic resistance. It's a measure of how much energy you lose charging and discharging the capacitor as well as eliminating factor in how fast you can pull energy out or push energy in. Lithium batteries don't all have about the same capacity for a given size. Lithium titanate batteries can be charged and discharged many more times but have lower capacity. Lithium ion like the kind you find in laptops and phones is about the best in terms of capacity but has safety issues and a shorter lifetime. Lithium iron phosphate has slightly lower capacity, but last many more years and doesn't tend to catch fire if it's punctured. Solid state batteries which are currently under development, promise to at least double the capacity and improve safety.

Thanks for the video it's hard to find straight forward explanations. I can say as good of a job dumbing it down for the masses I was white knuckling a couple times trying to keep up and I'm pretty knowledgeable in sparks... Problem I'm having is trying to find out what the bare bones electrical system I need for my system. I will be upgrading over time as money comes in but I need enough to get my new amp functioning safely. My stock electrical 140A alt is running a AP apcle 1800.1 and a 1 50x4 A/B,, but I'm adding a 80x4 and replacing the 1800 with a CAB45 (5k at 1 ohm) when the finally ship in from the far I east. I found a good 275A (full amperage at 1200rpm) alt but what is the bare minimum battery setup just to get me up and running. XS says buy this huge agm or 2 of these smaller AGMs well I don't have $700+ at the moment... And have a regular flooded starter batt under the hood at moment which isn't compatible with much I've gathered. I also I will probably not be using the amp at full power at the moment my current 2 AB XR15 subs have a 1500wrms rating so a 5k amp prob be a bit much even with impedance rise. I just know I don't have enough self control to leave it on the shelf until I can afford to aquire all the optimal electrical component's I need what will get it up and running at a safe voltage until I pick away at more battery's ect. For a 2010 grand caravan Alt options are very limited 275A is biggest I've seen and no one offers a really big alternator or a bracket for double alternators It would have to be full custom install which I may do at some point I am a welder/fabricator by trade. Any input would be appreciated.

Correct me if Im wrong, the beauty of LTO is that you can discharge that battery down to zero volt without damaging it, the caveat is the the efficiency of LTO (ratio of energy stored/energy delivered) is lower as compared to LIFEPO4 and Lithium polymer type. Though it is still a good practice to stay within the specified voltage. The life cycle is greater than 10000 cycles

Thank you for the informative video. Can you perform a test on the charging of a 500 farad capacitor bank? Typically, the cap bank is connected in parallel with the battery, correct? So, let’s say that our alternator is charging at 14.3 volts while driving around listening to music on your way from work on a Friday. You arrive home, shut of the vehicle, and do not drive until Monday morning. Here is where the test comes to play, can you measure the voltage before you start the vehicle? It will probably drop to 12.3 volts. ( +/- a volt due to parasitic consumption/ battery resting/ stabilizing) for the next part of the test, can you measure the current draw of how much amperage it takes to charge the capacitor bank? Yes , I would like for you to put a high current amp meter on the cap bank while starting the vehicle. Let us ( the viewers) know what you get for a reading when you have the time.

Been along time since I have watched a Sparked Vid. I just got 2 D4S 6ah LTO banks and the cap bank. I tried to DIY however I got immediately discouraged when I bought a Mouser Electronics capacitor integration kit. I thought that the caps came with it. The kit looks like an BMS built into the buss bars. I contacted loxus and was directed to caps. The cheapest was the D4S 500 Farad bank for 300$ and change. I bought it however it's all bussed together. Is there any additional advantage to having balanced capacitor cells? Or is it necessary? Why would loxus sell integration kits however send the same customers to an XS power dealer for the cells. I have a 250amp JS alternator big 3 to an Deka Intimidator group 34AGM and then the 2 6ah LTO banks bussed. Do I need to worry about balanced caps?

12.45 Q= The charge stored in a battery is calculated in Amp*Hours. Q= I x t Where Q is the charge, I is current in amps, t is time in hours. (Usually Q is calculated in the Unit Coulomb. 1 coulomb = 1 Amp*second) 1 Amp hour = 3600 Amp second 1 Amp hour = 1000 milli-amp hour W = Stored energy......is in Watt sec. (Ws) or KiloWatt hour (KWh) 1KWh = 3600000 Ws. (3600x1000) The discharge rate depends on how much current a battery can deliver when connected to a load.. without damaging the battery or dropping in voltage too much. So a battery with a charge of 10 amp hours with a max. discharge of 5 amps can theoretically do so for 2 hours... 2 amps for 5 hours or 1 amp for 10 hours The capacitor have a capacity, but this is expressed in Farad, mostly depending on the surface area. Also 1 Farad = 1 Amp sec / 1 Volt

Appreciate the info, but I think you got the c rating a bit wrong. When you described the LTOs as having 10c so they could supply 35 amps for 10 hours, I don’t believe that is correct. C rating is in regards to how much you can charge or discharge in relation to capacity. So for example it can supply 35 amps for one hour or 1 amp for 35 hours, were completely disregarding sag here as the 1 amp would likely be a tad bit longer, but for simplicity sake. 10c would mean that it can be charged or discharged at 10 times its capacity or 350amps. It’s quite common that the charging c rating be lower than the discharge. For example a lot of liion 18650s will be 1c or 2c for charging, but 10c for discharge. The headway 38120s are 10c charge 25c discharge. Also one other point is that the listed voltage is nominal, not max. Max voltage will be I believe 2.7-2.8 per cell, this is what you would charge up to. For a bank of 6 LTOs it should be charged between 16.2-16.8, similar as how Pb batteries are 12 (12.6) nominal, but are charged at 14.4. This is why you cant mix 6s LTO with agm, but LiFePO4 is fine in 4s since it’s 12.8 nominal up to 14.6 charge.

Hey Edward maybe you or someone here can help me I have a specific goal in my setup to not have any or very little voltage drop I’m at 900w rms in my setup a alpine pdx v9 I have a AGM 60ah battery under the hood and was thinking of a supercap by xs to help make sure that when I install my 250a H.O alt that my voltage never goes below 14v. So how do I achieve this ? Is a lithium battery the answer or a 75 farad super cap? So at full tilt I want to have and maintain 14v. I learned that voltage drop doesn’t just increase amperage drawn and amplifier output reduced but it also reduces the signal being amplified. So in order to retain the best audio quality I want to make my amp has all the power it needs and then some. I’m ok with overkill . It’s the motto in car audio So gents what’s more beneficial a super cap or lithium battery to achieve my goal??

I have around 100 ah of lifepo4 lithium (limitless) and a 370 amp alt. I have gotten 1 super cap bank so far, (getting more eventually) and my question is, is that 1 bank going to help me at all? I’m running 3-8k amplifiers, so I’m wanting to get- 3 banks of caps, but I’m curious if I run mine now, will it it bottleneck my amps when I’m trying to clamp over 20k? Like when the bass hits and the caps deplete completely will it essentially just act like wire and only charge at the rate my alt or lithium sends? Or will it negatively affect my output once they empty? I’m mostly just curious if I should not install them until I have enough banks? Thanks Ed!!

I used to play with lithium polymer batteries (slightly different chemistry to ions) in my RC cars (not currently in that hobby at the moment) but we had a simple formula for determining charge and discharge amperage. the batteries i used were much smaller (3500 milliamp hour). our charge rate was 1-2c depending on brand of batteries (quality usually meant better charge speed) and discharge was usually 30-50c. How we did it was convert milliamp hour to ah, by moving the decimal 3 places (3500 to 3.5 ah) then we could figure out the amp requirements and if it fit our application. One other thing we used to have to do, that you did not mention is balancing. Lithiums can be more prone to imbalance and potentially overcharging one or two cells in a bank (due to others being slightly slow to charge), you need to work out a solution for keeping a balance. even if occasional for long Lithium life Since you already have the ah converted, we could skip that. you said the batteries were 10c I'll assume both charge and discharge. so as you said you'd simply timed the 35 by 10 to get 350 amps. Now personally on a 10K amp i'd run two or three banks parallel, since a 10k amp can easily run 300-400 amps alone. One thing to think about Lithium Ion batteries are liquid based if you push them too far they can leak, once Lithium comes into contact with air, it ignites, you'll have a metal melting fire on your hands (literally white hot fire). So anyone thinking about lithium's, Please PLEASE do your research, know what you are doing

@@ericklein5097, Honestly, if lithium is involved, it's still volatile. All you need is for it to come out of whatever suspension (whatever it's mixed with) and you have issues. It may be the safest Lithium solution, but it's not that safe if lithium is involved. I have seen lithium fires, they are not fun. I get what you say, just saying if you aren't doing everything (Safe charging and balancing, even if occasionally), the law of averages say you'll have issues. I always said in teaching people about our type of batteries, these are as dangerous as a loaded gun, you treat it with respect and follow the rules, you'll never have an issue, but you treat it like a game or a toy, you'll have issues

Your video was very informative, I've been on this path, but the farad to amp conversion confused me. If you have a chance I have a taramps smart bass 5k amp max draw is 475amps, I have 3 zoom 12v lifep04 100amp batteries, the bms on each battery is 100amp charge/discharge. So in experiencing clipping at higher levels, my alternator is a 270 amp. I'm thinking 1000farad super cap bank should keep me from clipping.. without the caps I can only deliver 300 amp from my batteries, but adding the caps should get let me deliver the 475amp to the amp when it wants it and should eliminate my clipping problem, right? By the way fit not into Scott the lifep04 batteries get are the zoom 100ah on Amazon, I was looking at the 200amp batteries, but they use the same bms so only 100ah discharge even with the bigger battery, each smaller battery they have has a matching bms. I tried the 50 ah version but that wouldn't start my truck the 100 does, the 300 no problem, I also had to get a voltage booster circuit as my Toyota only charges to 13.3 normally, with the voltage diode the truck charges to 14.3v but running the amp hard just below the capacity of the battery back (300) my voltage does slowy go down (270 amp alternator recharging 300 ah in batteries with over a 300 who draw 290 on the amp and the additionall amps pulled from Basic car function mean's I I'm pulling more power from batt than the charging system can recharge the batteries so I th How many caps will I need to to be able to supliment the 175 amps that the amp needs that my battery bank is short yes I could remove the lifep04 batteries and bms but then I don't have a charge control amto keep them from bushing info flame and keep them balances..
