Thank you for posting! It's so much fun to watch you eating the obviously wonderful food! It all looks delicious and makes me want to whip up some potato pancakes right now. Hats off to the Lithuanian moms and grandmas who could make such wonderful dishes from humble, simple ingredients: potatoes, mushrooms, beets, bread, garlic, cream, pork.... Wish I were there with you! I'm glad you had lots to bring home and enjoy the next day. Btw, I'm a soup and sauce person, too!

If you do that, don't be too lazy to prepare some circles of minced meat to add inside them. Half-burger thickness was my approach i guess. I personally pre-fry them before adding to the pancakes to play it safe so that no meat is raw in there, plus pre-frying removes the moisture from the meat and it doesn't prevent the potatos to cook around it inside. The circles should initially be larger in diameter compared to planned pancake size because they shrink while being fried. Plus, the pancakes shouldn't be like oreos where meat is visible between the layers of potato. If potato dough doesn't overlap the meat in both sides and stick to each other, you may have problems flipping the pancakes. They are refferred as Kėdainių blynai here, opposed to Žemaičių blynai which are made similarly but boiled potatoes are used instead of grated ones.

I'd suggest to try out other Cepelinai next time around! The ones with curd (curd and fresh herbs - magic) filling is my favorite. Also, Balandėliai - much easier on a stomach. Then again, it's a variant of galubcy of all slavic countries, just ours are wrapped in a cabbage leaf. If you feel adventurous while locked down at home, try making not only the lazy man, but the most traditional desert - take a fresh cucumber (short ones, with spikes) and dip it in honey. If Push comes to shove - to sugar. 👌 I was once watching a show of Victorian time cooking (English Heritage youtube channel) - and was appalled by cucumber ice cream never realizing that it was pretty much same thing i used to do at grandma's 😂
@blahLTblah

Hello! Great video, but some fixes: With cepelinai you received sour cream with bacon cracklings in one cup. It was meant to be mixed together and then poured on cepelinai. Same goes for potato pancakes with bacon. It's what we usually do as it tastes the best (sour cream mixed with bacon cracklings) but it's not for everyone, some like to keep it separate and eat just with sour cream or so. And you missed some of the main traditional dishes. But I believe it's probably too much to try it all in one go... Almost impossible 😂 Anyway great video 👍 keep it up!

Much on here is fancy stuff, I grew up with homestyle fare, guess my mom wasn’t that fancy, a lot of these things I have not tried during my life. But I saw simple things when I was in Kaunas 24 years ago.. My cold beet soup is much different, made the same as other Lithuanians I know here in America. Made with cucumber, scallions, chopped hard-boiled eggs, dill, of course the chopped up beets, and the beet liquid. Made a little sour with butter milk, yogurt, etc. Potato pancakes of course, kugelis. A salad made with boiled potatoes beets hard boiled egg pickles beans. Mixed with sour cream and mayo. That’s another big favorite.But the rest is all just too fancy for me being the child of Lithuanian immigrants back in the 50s. Other members of my family and friends do like a lot of other things that I don’t care for. Was never a big meat lover, and I’m meatless now. But of course pork is a very big thing.

Tinginys is basically just a kind of chocolate sausage with cookies crumbs. It's simple but one of my favorite desserts. While šakotis or shakotis for English speakers (which literal translation is closer to branch/branchy something like that instead of tree cake but i guess it doesn't matter) is usually big and you use hands to break "Branches" off to eat it. Cepelinai vary from place to place, some people use boiled potatoes some raw and others mix two together, and to be fair i prefer raw or at least mixed ones to the boiled potatoes one. Other than what you already ate in the video i would've loved to see you try Vėdarai and kugelis. Both are potato-based dishes but IMHO they are great and were worth ha try.

If you think these Zepelins are "enormours", you should visit Karmelava near Kaunas. They are famous for their truly ENORMOUS ones. Why is it a big deal? Well, the challenge is not only in making the potato "casing" uniform so it cooks evenly, but also make it cooked through inside, but not mushy outside. The ones you tried are just some regular "domesticated" zepelins - with minced pork. But in some regions they traditionally have different fillings. E. g. curd or mushrooms. One of my friends tells me that the only "real traditional" zeppelin filling is chicken lungs. "Tree cake" serving is a bit weird. It is fairly hard, so it is not eaten with fork usually. The whole cake itself looks like a fir tree. And you simply cut pieces of it and eat with your hands. One dish you absolutely must try is "kibinai". It's a pastry made of dough with filling. A bit like a big dumpling, but it is baked in the oven. This is traditional dish of Karaite people that mostly live in the town of Trakai. Naturally, Trakai is the best place to try kibinai. As far as i know, the most "traditional" filling is lamb. But nowadays they come with all sorts of fillings - meat, chicken, curd, mushrooms, cabbage, fruit etc.

From the desserts I would mention famous "Grybukai" - bisquits with brown top and white bottom, which really look like mushrooms. They could be made of 2 types of dough. We, Grybukai lovers, know the best places to buy them 😃 it goes also for Šakotis - the more natural ingredients are used, the better Šakotis is. Also, very typical dessert in Lithuania/Latvia is sweet curd with chocolate layer on top. You can by them in the grocery stores. I think that our cakes (tortai) are good too. In grocery shops you can find many different, but the most famous probably are Medaus tortas (honey cake), Napoleonas, Dainava and so on. As a Lithuanian living abroad, i think we have good variety of soups, I really miss them! Herring is popular, "balta mišrainė" is an attribute of each family gathering at home - also made of simple ingredients. I love balandėliai (meat+rice rolled in cabbage) too. Thanks for your wonderful videos and positive vibes! 🙂

If you loved Cepelinai you would also love a variations of this dish called *day before Zeppelin* (vakarykščiai cepelinai ) where we cut Zepellin in half and then fry on the pan.

Hello, your videos are so good, so lovely and really interesting. We travelled last year from Vilnius via Riga to Tallinn. It is so cool to see your view of everything and to remember everything again. Greetings from Germany ☺️

It's really funny for me to watch this because my family comes from Vilnius ( both my grandparents on my mum side were born there ) but we are Polish , they were born in 1920s so some of that food I know as our polish and some more regional. My grandma loves potato pancakes she would make them on a spot when you come for the ( same as crêpes) also cepeliny, bliny, baked potato bread cake (?) And of course kołduny ( a bit different than pierogi because they come in a light broth and you should eat one at once) ; also cold bet soup is called chłodnik ( " cooler") served with raw cucomber and boils egg and dill. So I don't know how much of it is like regional to Vilnius or just influenced since Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth? Also side note, I just realized recently that many dishes considered traditional have something similar in neighbouring country...also there are differences Evan between regions of Poland ;) so I guess for each their own :)

Hmm maybe your Lithuanian grandparents were cooking Lithuanian food since they were from lithuania?? 😀 Mistury solved. Haha, BTW potato pancake, and potato pie originated from litvaks Lithuanian jevish.

@@tadasc8449 they were not Lithuanian. They were Polish. Whole family was from Vilnius and at that time almost half of the city was Polish and the other half Jewish with only 1-2% Lithuanians , they spoke Polish and had Polish last name. I have nothing against Lithuanian , Just saying it was different back then and my family was forced to leave, when Lithuanians took over the city. But it wasn't meant to be about politics, just some interesting dishes.

My point was that Lithuanian upper class were speaking Polish and changed there names into Polish. Whilst beeing Lithuanian at the same time. Polish are making Vilnius special town! During Polands agresiv act on Lithuania in 1920 1939 it was different coz of polonization from mainland Poland... You must know history. That's were Poland ended Lithuania Poland marriage that lasted for hundreds of years... And some kind of relationship been restored only in 1990. Anyways. If you dig into family tree you'll find the answer. It's so complicated to understand what Vilnius regeon is but pink soup in polish hotel somewhere next to German border was cold Lithuanian style cold soup. 🙂 I tried it, wasn't as good as the one in Vilnius. 😁😀 P. S my great granny who's dad was Lithuanian polish used to call pozechki red current (in lithu raudoni serbentai). Peace 😉
