I normally don't need tutorials, but for a Jacob song I think it's not embarrassing to need a little bit of help figuring out all those changes! His live version is completely different tho from what I could tell, and well it's on guitar with a capo on

Yeah his live version is great as well, if there’s demand for it I could make something for that in the future

Hi, first off great video! I was wondering about the second added 2-5-1 progression in the second verse. You go for Bbm7 into Eb into Fm, but i would argue the Eb to be Eb7#9 (possibly b13). Thoughts?
@QuintenPieters
10 ай бұрын
Yea i could definitely hear that! The way i make these things is by listening a couple times and then just playing it a lot, so sometimes stuff gets ‘lost in translation’.

For the a minor to a major at 10:12 charles connel actually thinks this also happens in the song itself :)! I just saw that in his video iirc! Anyway, lekker bezig man :)! Nice how you can transcribe this so easily, I had a lot of piano lessons and have a ‘feel’ for the chords but cannot name the more difficult ones as I never really learned that system.

It's hard to hear because the bass isn't strong but I think the first instrumental interlude starts on F# going circle of fifths and the outro is the one that starts on B. Also, that last chord in the 4 key modulation is a G#m6 (IIm6 in F#) or Abm6 (IVm6 in Eb) not Abm11.
@QuintenPieters
Жыл бұрын
I’ll have to check that out with the bass thing, for the Abm6 I’ll go ahead and say that’s just the way I like to play it. Thanks for the feedback though!

I'm struggling to hear that b3 on the Abm11 you mentioned in the recording. I think an Ab9sus4 works fine. Any thoughts?

It's all subjective really! I decided to go for the Abm11 in my version, feel free to do something else in yours of course. This tutorial is really for the way I play the song :)

@QuintenPieters
10 ай бұрын
Je kan t het makkelijkst kopieren van wat ik doe denk ik! Maar vaak idd pink en ringvinger rechts melodie en de rest de akkoorden over verspreiden

I can't imagine a Jacob Collier fan struggling to figure out a diatonic chord progression. Good tutorial though!
@jas_bataille
Жыл бұрын
That... is a LOT more than just a diatonic chord progression with all the extensions and the resolution switches, and not everyone majored in an harmonic instrument... and not every Jacob fan is a musician.

@@jas_batailleThank you for saying this! Makes me feel less stupid. Massive fan (was on the Mahogany choir for this song) but not a professional musician.

Nice tutorial! I'd call that Abm11 an Abm7(add 2&4) because with 9's 11's and 13's the upper extensions replace the root intervals therefore an Ab-11 would not include the 3rd nor the 5th which in this case it does hence my suggested naming convention. Thanks for the nice tutorial!
@QuintenPieters
Жыл бұрын
Hi, the jazz convention is leaving out the small intervals in favour of the big ones. A jazz pianist knows what to play (and what to leave out) for a minor 11 chord. Also, when there’s a seven in the chord, big or small, 2 should be 9 and 6 should be 13! At least, that’s what my harmony teacher used to say (it rhymes in dutch!)

@@ThonColinFilms the notes I play are correct, I just wrote the wrong chord name! So you can still just follow my hands and you can just ignore what I wrote down
