YOUR ASSIGNMENT: This lesson is simple! Today we will read part of Chapter One (p. 1-13.) You can read it on your own or read as you listen to this video of Mr. Dean reading it to you.
Your only assignment today is to imagine what Marcus looks like. He is not described in this chapter much at all (except his height.) Marcus could look like anything. (Remember that the kids in the “movie trailers” we watched are not necessarily what Marcus looks like.)
First, check out this short video of murals and street art in the Mission District of San Francisco. It’s where Marcus/W1n5t0N lives. This’ll give you some idea of what it looks like. It’s a beautiful, exciting urban place. (It’s also crowded and dirty and sometimes dangerous, like a lot of city neighborhoods. Mr. Dean lived there for a while!) • San Francisco Mission ...
Is Marcus athletic? Skinny? Chubby? Cute? Not cute? How does Marcus dress? Does Marcus have long hair or short hair? Is Marcus Black? Latino? Asian? Native? White? Mixed? Could Marcus even be . . . a girl? (Or a gender-nonconforming person?)
(Imagine, for a moment, that Marcus/W1n5t0N looks a little like you.)
Books are better than videos because you get to decide what the characters are like!
Remember: this isn’t art class. You drawing does not have to be beautiful, it just has to get the idea across what you think Marcus might be like. Put at least 20 minutes of work into it, though. Feel free to use any tools you like, including pencil, marker, crayon, or computer tools, to create your picture. Use your Chromebook or phone to capture your picture and send it to Mr. Dean. He will make a slideshow and share it to everyone!
