Simply wonderful. To play a Brittenesque accompaniment and imitate the very distinctive tonal register of Peter Pears is quite simply a work of genius.

This is unbelievable. Not only has he perfected the timbre of Pears' voice, he's nailed all its quirks and mannerisms, as well as the those of Britten's style. Amazing. What is equally amazing is that the audience seems to get the joke.

That's because around the same time Britten and Pears appeared on prine time TV singing Britten's folk song arrangements, so people had seen the actual thing being lampooned.

If you know the Scene in Britten's "Death In Venice" where Aschenbach goes to have his hair cut. The Music that begins the aria sung by the barber sounds almost exactly like the beginning of Dudley Moore's send up of Britten here. Uncanny really as B.T.F actually pre dates "Death In Venice" by many years!

I read somewhere that he was in the audience for this and stormed out in a huff! He was a bit precious, it must be said. Perhaps a lack of self-deprecating humour (or any self doubt) is the price you pay for the highest genius (cf Wagner) but it's a shame he did not realize that such parody is often born of a love for the original.

Makes me wonder whether Moore ever tried to imitate Jon Vickers. 30-odd years ago, I had A GREAT voice teacher. He was a tenor, a very small man. But his voice was vibrant like you wouldn't believe. And he could do spot-on imitations of other singers.

Yes, I heard that too. Pears himself took it in good part. Britten on the other hand was extremely cross. He was incredibly sensitive. After the lukewarm reception of his ballet The Prince of the Pagodas he only recorded a highly curtailed version. The full ballet has since been recorded and I think it's glorious. It contains some of his most wonderful music. He was also upset about the reception of his coronation opera Gloriana. Another piece that has had a marvellous revival.

@@jamesbeddall6470 Apparently Britten never spoke to Moore again. Yes He was VERY thin skinned. While he was getting ready to play or conduct (Can't remember which) some of his music in a concert one of his friends noticed a a stray piece of cotton on the lapel of his jacket . She went to brush it off and he scowled "Leave it, I like it!" (Nerves? ) I heard Pagodas was cut so it could fit on 2 LP records? Shame really because hearing the Knussen recording makes you realise what wonderful music was actually left out of the original recording

Reportedly, they did. Britten disliked it, being very sensitive about his work (he was, for that reason, annoyed when John Culshaw of Decca Records, producing the first recording of the War Requiem, revealed that he had recorded most of the rehearsals as well as the actual takes, showing Britten being humorous as he guided the performers through that profound work that he took most seriously) but Pears saw the funny side and quite enjoyed it.

@@MS-19 Interesting. I can see both points of view; f you expend blood and sweat to produce music and you have a degree of insecurity something like this could cut deeply. On the other hand I could understand why Pears probably burst a gut laughing - I did.
