This scene shows perfectly why Friedrich is the right man for Jo and not Teddy. He challenges her in a level Laurie never could: the intellectual level. Laurie and Jo were best friends, loved to do crazy things and be young and carefree. With Friedrich she can develop herself as a woman and a writer. Perfect match :D well done Louisa May Alcott :)

"If we could only transcend ourselves, _without_ perfection! ... I think we are _all_ 'hopelessly flawed'..." How much more Friedrich understood about life than Jo did!

Whew I can feel the tension in this little room, mostly because Gabe is such a great actor! Even with a German accent and not his own Irish one, he is irresistible =) the way he smiles, the way his eyes crinkle at the corners... Jo must have been thinking "this man is SEXY oh my god!" right along with the rest of us =P AmaZing

Love this film. So much better than the new one. There's something so charming about the 1990s version that it surpasses the new version and always will. The new version will never hold a candle to this one and will never be as loved.

If you young kids haven't seen the original with June Allyson, Liz Taylor, Janet Leigh, Maggie O'Brien and of course Peter Lawford, then you have never really seen this movie..Seriously!...this version and these actors aren't even close...

I agree!!! June Allyson is the epitome of perfection as Jo! But I do enjoy this version as well. Just not nearly as much.

The 40s one was more theatrical in nature, actually I can't decide which one I like more. Some of the scenes were more touching in the 40s one than in the 90s one, Bhaer was way better looking and more interesting in the 40s one and June Allyson looked more like Jo. Choosing Ryder for Jo is basically same as if Salma Hayek were to play Ugly Betty, but other than that I love rewatching both films and comparing the two.

that's not how a person from Berlin would speak English. Not at all. That's maybe how a person from Bavaria would speak English. Maaaaybe.

Oh well Gabriel Byrne is Irish. I studied German and I don´t think he sounds like German but I still love him in this film.

the first book I read properly was Little Women. Little did I know that life would immitate art as I am myself in the process of writing a book based on life like Jo. My daughter Beki passed away 3 years ago, she loved this film and reminded me so much of Beth.

Yes, the film's perfect in every way, best version, but I prefer the 49 version's Bhaer with his piano solos, and he was a more interesting character there. This Bhaer is quite boring and so is Jo and Bhaer's relationship, finishing off lines from the same books.
