Ian from Little Dot US here, many of the cons Sandu mentioned here could be fixed by tube rolling. One of our reviewers is trying to figure out the best option(s). You’d be surprised some of the upgrade tubes aren’t as costly. Thanks for all the support!

What upgrade tubes would you suggest?

For those of you who have been waiting for this, please check out there tube rolling article here audiofool.reviews/tube-rolling-the-little-dot-mk3se-6dj8-6922/ If you don’t have time to read the whole thing, CCa is the best performer, Reflector 1974 EV grabs second, and Tesla 6922 comes in third.

Hey Sandu, is this one of those units that are noticeably better through XLR headphones output, or the 3.5 jack is just as good ? (connected from XLR to XLR amp/dac) I read the whole written review but unless i missed this part i don't remember being mentionned, thanks for the help.

Hi mate. Nope, it actually sounds as good via RCA. No need for a balanced source if you don't have any.

Wish it had line output for a speaker based system. I am currently using a Douk Audio P1 Tube Preamp with a pair of matched Voskhod Rocket Tubes being fed by the SMSL M200. Works great for speakers and is powerful enough to power all of my headphones with plenty of headroom to spare. (To reduce noise and increase SNR I replaced the DC power wart with the iFi ultra low noise DC adapter.)

power it off, tubes are getting worn out all the time, not only when music is playing.

Better then A90, can you make comparison both of them?

A90 with HPA4 are still kings when it comes to speed, transparency, detail and THD. LittleDot wins in terms of scale (soundstage and depth), pin point location of all the notes around the listener and when it comes to natural textures (especially if you listen to a lot of instrumental music). Depends on taste.

Finally a serious review of the MKIII SE! I purchased this in 2019 for a very good price, for using with Beyerdynamic DT880 PRO. It's indeed a very good amplifier for those who want to try tubes as you say but don't like the excess of colouring on high and mid range: can easily drive every (and i mean EVERY,) ortodynamic i've launch at it, and i think is better on those instead of planars. Why i say that? After some months i've go for tube rolling... Purchased a pair of Philips E88CC from Azdam and my new queen, T1 2nd generation, arrived at my home. WOW, my lockdown went much more good with those two babies! The detailing is astonishing, i've put Gentle Giant's Octopus through my TEAC dac and the result is incredible, also with Jethro Tull's A Passion Play: the voices and the eardrums were so detailed and punched that sometimes make me close my eyes during listening. Unfortunately the same amount of power and detail is no present on the Hifiman Sundara used with it, tried also the high gain config but they didn't sound well as on a full transistor amp, so i don't agree about using planar on this one. I preferred a lot ortodynamics sound: DT880 Pro 250 ohm, T1 2nd Gen, HD58X Jubilee... They all sound so great through the MKIII SE.

how do I convince myself burn-in is real ?
@quadrannilator
4 жыл бұрын
I would just not bother with deliberately trying to look for burn in. More than burn-in having a possibility of being a placebo, trying to look for it can not just create confirmation bias but also bigger placebo in itself. Rest assured, if you have new gear that does need burning in, you will notice it in a few days provided you keep most other peripheral conditions the same. You won't have to convince yourself its real.

@@quadrannilator Amazing explanation. Thank you. I agree, not everything will change after few hours or days of use. Some don't do that, some a little, some a lot.

@@Soundnews One of my experience with a gear I own, the Fiio F5: While I did experience burn in just a little few days after I started using it, it wasn't so noticable that I would pay much conscious attention to it. Many months went by using it as a daily driver. One fine day, I had some free time and being in the mood, I fired up some tracks with lot of bass energy, and very fast transients. Tried my best to work with high res files - the music production was fully synthetic in nature. Because I was in the groove I played at a higher volume than usual, almost unhealthy levels. That really actually burned in the material of the drivers and stretched them past some resistance point. After that session on, the bass even got deeper, the mids and transients very open (Fiio tuning is towards macro dynamics, not treble oriented details) and some hard pans/stereo width/soundstage also felt much larger. Female vocals became huge. Didn't not notice any change in the treble region. So in my experience, my burn in actually happened many months later into my use and only because I pushed them beyond its Elastic Limit I think. Every gear's mileage varies. I would only say to everyone that just be open to whatever your music arrangement has within to reveal to you. It doesn't matter whether it exhibits burn in or source sensitivity or not.

@@Soundnews I'm new to the hobby, but have really dived in head first over the past year. So, is burn-in something that will occur naturally as I use new equipment, or is there a special procedure I need to follow in order to actually burn them in?
@Soundnews
4 жыл бұрын
@@DwarfsRBest It will occur naturally, nothing else needs to be done. Generally speaking, amplifiers of any sorts (headphone amps, integrated or power amps) benefit the most, especially the ones with hundreds of capacitors/transistors/mosfets. Some speakers/headphones also benefit from this, but at a lesser degree
