Permanent Presidential Music Commission presents LITUNGU - a lyre from Kenya, with its cultural dance.
THIS IS THE STORY OF THE LITUNGU
Litungu is a Bukusu lyre made of 7 strings. It has two arms running from resonator that are joined by the cross bar. The resonator is made from a special tree called kumutua. The instrument was originally played by only men among the bukusu. The litungu ensemble comprises of Litungu, Luwengele (hand rattle), Vipangalia (shakers) and siriri. Litungu accompanies most of ceremonial dances of the Bukusu.
