This is mostly set in Moscow, which is in the European part of Russia. The Muscovites of Ivan the Terrible's time were predominantly Scandinavian. The only Asian influences on the Muscovite culture of the time was the dress, which was heavily Mongol-inspired, due to the influence of the Golden Horde.

shortee4204real: Once again, whether or not you think Stalin's comparison of himself with Ivan the Terrible is a good one is irrelevant. This movie was an attempt to compare Stalin with Ivan the Terrible. I happen to think the two are a lot alike, but in ways that Stalin would never approve: they were both gravely paranoid, they both had tons of innocent people put to death for supposed plots and schemes that were the product of their own paranoid delusions. They both ruled through fear.

Paintings of Ivan the Terrible come from a time when some people at least knew what he looked like. Curly, light brown hair does not occur naturally among Asians, and there is no reason to add it to a portrait in an Asian culture. And then there's the forensic reconstruction, which shows, unmistakably, the face of a European.

The music wasn't exactly *written* for the film. Sergei Prokofiev - who wrote the original soundtrack, was intimately familiar with the repertoire of the Russian Orthodox Church and incorporated age-old hymns (or "napevi") into the film. Both he and Eisenstein literally stuck their necks out, to create such reverent scenes in the militantly atheist culture that was Stalin's Soviet Union.

Russian word "knyaz" is cognate to Germanic konung/koenig/king. In pre-Petrine Russia, depending on the context, it could mean prince, duke, or king. Generally, "Veliky Knyaz" was equivalent to King. "Tsar" could mean either Emperor or King, again depending on the context. After Peter and his successors introduced western titles to Russia, "Tsar" was more and more delegated to mean King and "Veliky Knyaz" became to mean simply Grand Duke. But when Ivan was crowned Tsar, he was taking Imperial title.

The Russians of Ivan the Terrible's time were predominantly of Scandinavian descent, ever since the time of Prince Yarmak. The planet Mercury was named after the god as part of a theme: all of the planets in this solar system are named after gods of the Roman pantheon. The metal was also named after the god, because of its liquid or "quick" state. Indeed, mercury was once called "quicksilver." No food has "intellectual growth effects." Some foods are good for the brain, but the intellect is another matter entirely.
