A unique and appealing JRPG classic for fans of the genre ★★★★★
"Live A Live is definitely a game unlike any other JRPG I've played, both in terms of the combat system and the structure of the game. It's a SNES classic that only came out in Japan, but now it can be enjoyed globally on Nintendo Switch.
Live A Live offers eight chapters from different eras of history, each with different gameplay. Basically they all contain the same combat system, but there are chapters in which other mechanics are given more importance than this one. As a result, there are chapters that give more gameplay and make others feel shorter. There are short chapters such as Wild West or Far Future, which last around an hour and have a more time-travelling and cinematic exploration focus, respectively. On the other hand, chapters that offer more combat and secrets, such as Prehistory or the Edo Period, can offer three or four hours even. Even if it seems like the game is going to be short, I still recommend reading this review. Regarding the combat system, I liked it and it is a bit different from the usual. Rather than marked turns and skill points or magic, it uses areas of effect and skill charge times. It's a good system that will sometimes challenge you to measure your moves well, although once you've learnt the basics there's not much more to it and it's not surprising.
This game is an almost 1:1 scale remaster of the original, whose main improvements are the HD-2D style graphics that is working so well for Square Enix and some quality of player life improvements (better menus, interaction, translation...). The soundtrack is good and has some catchy themes; the boss theme is especially motivating. Being so faithful to the original SNES game, it must be said that this is noticeable in basically two aspects: one "bad" and one very good. The flaw that can be blamed on this game is that, despite eight varied storylines, none of them get too deep due to their short length, sometimes leaving you wanting more. This is because the original Live A Live was an "experimental" game at the time, where they wanted to try and bring together several stories and due to the limitations of its release year they couldn't be any longer. However, I think this is more than compensated for by my favourite aspect: its secrets. Like many classic games, Live A Live contains a wealth of bosses, cutscenes and hidden objects that are only visible to the most exploratory. While there are chapters in which there are fewer, there are many very valuable equippable items that are really almost unthinkable to get in a normal game. These details make certain chapters particularly enjoyable. Finally, it is worth mentioning that after completing all eight chapters, a final chapter is unlocked that somehow ties the stories together and offers tons of this hidden content. Here at last the game offers us that depth we demanded and getting all the equippables becomes very satisfying. Completing all eight chapters will have taken me approximately 20 hours, while finishing the final chapter (and the previous one) at 100% has made a total of 32 hours.
In conclusion, it is a game that I enjoyed a lot, although it is tied to its origins for better and for worse, as I have explained. If you really like JRPG's I recommend it, it's a different game that you must try. On the other hand, if you are not very enthusiastic about the genre or the proposal or if you don't see yourself exploring in depth to find the secrets, maybe it's not for you. As a final comment, if you play it I recommend consulting a guide from time to time, because there are some very good items that are actually almost impossible to get unless you're told to... even a character in the final chapter recommends you to use a guide so you don't miss anything!"
