My question for Out of the Trenches: Urban warfare was a hallmark of WW2 battles, but were there ever any instances of urban street to street fighting in World War One?
@declanpm8578
6 жыл бұрын
Actually I can answer this, yes. Yes there was. In the western front alone all you need to look up to find out more about where urban combat would have taken place is the Red zone of France or "Zone Rouge", although I don't think you can call it "urban combat" if all the urban areas are flattened ruins.

QUESTION FOR OUT OF THE TRENCHES Hey Indi and team I have a follow-up to the question about post-war plans. Did the Germans have any plans for the Royal Navy if they won the war, like restrictions on the number of dreadnoughts or battleships the British could have or maybe demands that the British destroy some of their ship warfs. The Royal Navy blockade was after all responsible for the turnip winter and other hardships the Germans suffered during the war. Keep up the excellent work guys!

In the book "The Englishman's daughter" it is revealed that a great many french civilians caught on the wrong side of the lines after the race to the sea were repatriated by the germans through switzerland.They left their homes behind but they at least could go into France and still be in their homeland if not their homes. for the belgians, the defiance of belgium is amazing and inspiring. It did of course inspire the 2nd most famous litterary detective who was a blegian refugee in "The curious affair at Styles."

I have a question for OUT OF THE TRENCHES. According to Wikipedia, at the outbreak of World War I, a radio transmitter located in the Eiffel Tower jammed German radio communications, seriously hindering their advance on Paris and contributing to the Allied victory at the First Battle of the Marne. So did the Eiffel Tower actually save France during WWI? Or is this just some old propaganda? What was the practical impact of the Eiffel Tower on the Schlieffen Plan?

As for the refugees I would like to share a short review regarding Belarusian refugees during WWI. Before the war in the Russian Empire there were 5 provincees, which were considered as 'belarusian" and where ethnically belarusian population was dominant (Grodno, Vilno, Minsk, Vitebsk and Mohilev provincess). Total population was something about 10 million of residents. During german offensive in 1915 Grodno, Vilno and partly Minsk provincees were occupied by germans, and before occupation Russian authorities had organised evacuation campain, which had the main aim not to leave something preasious to germans. It means that all valuable, including residents, must be evacuated to the east. By the way, it's interesting that mainly the orthodox population decided to move to the east, and the catholics decided to stay on their land. Overall estimation is that from these 5 provinces were evacuated at least 1,5 mln of people, and the highest figure is 2,3 mln. The difference exists because of several reasons, which of the the most wide spreaded are: - pure state of statistics during war chaos - illnesses and epidemics. - further Civil war in Russia and overall desintegration of state system. In the end, only 1/3 of total quantity of refugees decided to return back to their homes, and mainly they return to a new country, which appeared after the end of WWI - to Poland. It's considered in Belarusian historical science that the rest of them decided to leave in internal Russian provinces (about 1/3), and the last 1/3 died of different reasons. This is the price, which was paid by the belarusian civil population during that war.

Inspired by this episode of "Out of the trenches" and another one of your regular episodes (which I just can't single out at the moment), I've started reading "Trench Warfare 1914-1918: The Live and Let Live System", by Tony Ashworth. Or were there other examples of such "bureaucratized fraternisation" elsewhere?

Possible OOTT question. Was Hemp or Cannabis used during the war? I know that in the early 20th century hemp was used for rope and fiber before falling out of favor, and cocaine was used for most of the war. Dear Indy. HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE fan of you channel & have been enjoying it since it first started. My question is this, what with all the spent ammo casings of artillery fire, was there an organized effort to retrieve all this scrap metal to be returned to their original countries for recycling to make new bombs, seeing as there was such a shortage of raw materials to make ammunition towards the end of the war? i'm not talking about the post war clean-up, but wonder if there was any recycling going on during the actual conflict. In 1914 on the Serbian front during the month-long period of trench warfare after the Battle of Drina anecdotal evidence suggests that the Serbian Army concealed their machine-guns which were to be used only in case of enemy infantry attack, primarily to reduce the possibility of Austro-Hungarian artillery finding and destroying them, and also not to waste ammo.

In 1914 the constitutional theory of the British Empire was that the Crown was indivisable. When the King went to war all his dominions and territories were at war automatically. By 1939 the situation had changed. The Statute of Westminster and the way King Edward VIII's abdication took effect in Ireland and South Africa on different days from the rest of the Empire, demonstrated that the Crown was divisible. In practice only Ireland, of all the countries loosely associated with the Empire, chose neutrality in the Second World War.

Basically the most brutal ethnic cleansing was happening in the Balkans and in the crumbling Ottoman Empire. Take into consideration that the Turks in the empire before the war consisted 40% of its total population. After the war they were about 98%.
@varana
6 жыл бұрын
The main reason for that is, though, that most of the non-Turkish parts simply ceased to be part of Turkey. The statistic with 40% refers to the whole Ottoman Empire, including Syria, Mesopotamia, and major parts of the Arabian peninsula. The one with 98% refers to Turkey in its modern borders. The expulsion of the Greek population after the Greco-Turkish War was "brutal ethnic cleansing" enough that there really is no need for using the numbers in this misleading way. (According to Ottoman statistics, Turks were slightly more than 72% of the population in Asia Minor in 1910.)
@xara2721967
6 жыл бұрын
Indeed sir that is correct. You have to take into account more than the ethnic cleansing to explain that statistic. And yet even with all of that land being lost you still cant take out of the equasion the genocides. How a diverse empire became so homogenous.

About refugees, I know this interesting excerpt from Agatha Christie's autobiography (chapter 7): "I then remembered our Belgian refugees. There was a large colony of Belgian refugees in the parish of Tor. Everyone overflowed with love, kindness, compassion, when they arrived. There were people who furnished homes for them to live in and did everything possible to make them feel at ease. Later, however, there was the usual reaction, when the refugees were not grateful for what had been done to them and complained about this or that. The fact that the poor creatures were disoriented and in a strange country was not well understood. Many of them were poor, suspicious peasants, and the last thing they wanted was an invitation to tea, or a visit; all they asked for was to be left in peace so that they could survive, save money, dig their gardens, arrange them in their private and intimate ways." By the way: there will be an episode about the "Queen of Crime"? She worked hard as a nurse during WW1 years.

Hi Indy, you and the Great War team have done a fantastic job. I have a question for Out of the Trenches. What was the role and involvement of the Philippines during WW1? I think they've already touched on the subject on a special video about US involvement in the war since Philippines is a US colony but I might be wrong. I do not know much about Philippines' military contributions but on the economic side the Ph supplied raw materials to American factories. Philippines had an economic boom because of it but after the war the economy declined because of reduced demands.

Hi Indy and crew this show has given me a lot of insight into a piece of forgotten history, I have a question for out of the trenches during the war on the battlefield where food supplies were short enough for men to eat the leather from their shoes were there any cases of cannibalism especially during the Russian winter in the mountains during the war? Thank you and keep up the great work.

Nobody remembers refugees. The forgotten casualties of conflict. So easily forgotten as "stateless" entities. Like souls trapped between two planes of existence, forced into purgatory through situations not of their own making. Nobody remembers refugees, unless they remember only to balk and cast off from one line on the map to another. An endless procession of humanity. A living monument to man's callousness.

The idea of a dissolution of Germany does remind me of FDR's plan during WW2, where Germany would be devided into several historical nations. Including Austria, Hannover, Prussia etc....

I'm an IT student but a big history lover. I wanted to ask you about the Bosniak soldiers in the AustroH army. How many were them and which status did they have. Thanks for the show, it's one of my favourite subscribed channels on youtube! P.S. I'm really hoping for a special episode of the Bosniak soldiers in the AustroH army.

From Arthur Guy Empey's book "Over the Top"... Tommy divides the German army into three classes according to their fighting abilities. They rank as follows, Prussians, Bavarians, and Saxons. When up against a Prussian regiment it is a case of keep your napper below the parapet and duck. A bang-bang all the time and a war is on. The Bavarians are little better, but the Saxons are fairly good sports and are willing occasionally to behave as gentlemen and take it easy, but you cannot trust any of them overlong. ... In these trenches when up against the Prussians and Bavarians, Tommy had a hot time of it, but when the Saxons "took over" it was a picnic, they would yell across that they were Saxons and would not fire. Both sides would sit on the parapet and carry on a conversation. This generally consisted of Tommy telling them how much he loved the Kaiser while the Saxons informed Tommy that King George was a particular friend of theirs and hoped that he was doing nicely. When the Saxons were to be relieved by Prussians or Bavarians, they would yell this information across No Man's Land and Tommy would immediately tumble into his trench and keep his head down. If an English regiment was to be relieved by the wild Irish, Tommy would tell the Saxons, and immediately a volley of "Donner und Blitzen's" could be heard, and it was Fritz's turn to get a crick in his back from stooping, and the people in Berlin would close their windows. Usually when an Irishman takes over a trench, just before "stand down" in the morning, he sticks his rifle over the top aimed in the direction of Berlin and engages in what is known as the "mad minute." This consists of firing fifteen shots in a minute. He is not aiming at anything in particular, -- just sends over each shot with a prayer, hoping that one of his strays will get some poor unsuspecting Fritz in the napper hundreds of yards behind the lines. It generally does; that's the reason the Boches hate the man from Erin's Isle.

Question:Indy why didn't Germany simply overwhelm France or vise versa?Also British warships had the advantage before the battle of jutland started so why didn't they attack first?

I have noticed that hardly anyone mentions that half of the 300K of people that were rescued at Dunkirk were French and within a year 95% of the French that were rescued returned on thier own to France. Doh! forgot this is just WWW1, sorry

Question for OOTT: There is a wartime legend in the western front that a band of deserters lived in No Man’s Land. This band was made of deserters from both sides and only came at night and looted the dead bodies of deceased soldiers for clothes, rations, food, weapons etc. Did this legend had an impact on the morale of soldiers from both sides or in anyway “scare” them to the point of staying awake at night? (Without factors like enemy artillery bombing or preparing for night attacks or counterattacks)
