I agree 20 years is a lot however, you have to consider that the judge is trying to make it right for him and for the victims families so it seems like if he gives him less than it’s a slap in the face to those whose lives were impacted by these actions. I think 10 years max in a state where no “good behavior” is available. I would not want to have been the judge and been in that position.

Judge: "Our criminal justice system is not designed, in a way, to allow people to apologize, or to alleviate grief, or to show respect to victims, until a day like today (at sentencing)." Powerful words! One thing I love about 12-step programs is that they allow for all those things to happen, in due time, while keeping at the foremost consideration the impact to the victims/survivors. When honestly working the steps, one simply can't apologize just to relieve one's conscience. One also can't apologize in an attempt to manipulate the outcome. The steps allow for a person to change, grieve the harm they've caused, apologize sincerely & without strings attached, and move forward differently so that the world is no longer harmed by their future actions. I wish the 12-step model was practiced more frequently in society. It's widely practiced in prisons, which I find interesting.

I mean he stabbed a girl half his size trying to break things up. He stabbed an innocent 3rd party who was trying to break things up. He confronted the group once, was told to leave, and did so. He then returned restarting the conflict, then shoulder checked a member of the group. That is when the group of TEENS(kids) became physical. You don’t get to be the aggressor in a conflict and claim self defense. The old man is the one who escalated things, and he is the one who refused to let things go. Returning to confront them a second time after leaving should tell you enough about his mindset. Not to mention he tampered with evidence trying to hide the knife, and he fled the scene moments after 1st responders arrived. If he was truly a man in fear for his life, using self defense, why did he go through such lengths to try and detach himself from what happened? My last point is, he was inches away from stabbing his own friend. Proving he was swinging at anything that moved. In self defense cases, by case law, you need to clearly identify a threat of great bodily harm or death. This guy stabbed anything within range. He wanted to someone to pay for what he decided was a slight to him. He got his wish. And his well deserved prison time.

I will be forever haunted by this case. I felt so sad for NM during the trial and still do. This is the first defendant I have seen in 3 ish yrs of watching trials, who looked genuinely remorseful throughout the whole case and sentencing and when he made his statement he was genuinely sorry which you could tell in his voice and in the fact he wanted to address the family but was told to address the court, but at the end, when saying sorry again he still looked at the family. IMO the 'children' should still be held accountable for their mob mentality harrasssment and their choice of words escalating it and bringing over adults whom he thought would help but they (or at least Maddie), instead of asking what the problem was, why were they calling him them names, started screaming in his face. He was clearly alone and she could have easily drawn him away politely to talk to him and the 'children' could have easily been pushed past him by the other adults if they were genuinely still on their tubes. If he had not had a knife and he had taken a good beating they would have been charged, why shouldn't the survivors still be charged? I live in Wisconsin and am very disappointed in the jury in this trial. The young adults, NOT kids, as they kept referring to them as, were drunk and taunting and caused the outcome. Absolutely nothing was done with the drunk young adults who were not yet 21, and the rest of the drunk 20 somethings. This verdict is excusing the actions of the persons who were drunk and taunting and pushing the defendant. While Mr. Miu may have taken a severe action, he was afraid for his life. It was self-defense. He is ONE MAN against a mob of drunk young adults. The sentence was far too severe. The judge missed the boat on sentencing IMO, just like the jury did in their guilty verdict.

I feel horrible for the loss of life, but those young adults absolutely taunted and attacked him ferociously, shoving him under the water again and again. it was for no reason, other than what their drunk imaginations conjured up, then the drunk mob mentality kicked in and things got way out of hand. I would be mortified as a parent if any of those were my kids. I feel the sentence should have been less and glad it wasn't life - and the judge explained his decision well. Those responsible for the attack who survived should have legal consequences, as well. Also, the idea that anyone is surprised someone would carry a weapon for defense in case of road rage or anything else, mystifies me. Thank you covering Mr Maui’s sentencing. Since I wasn’t able to make it in time for the live today, I wasn’t part of the group chat poll. I have extremely mixed feelings about the sentence for justice for his case. So, I took some extra time to sift through these emotions. And I realized two important things that I should share. First, I’ve raised my son and he is now raising his family now and I’ve always worked as a speech therapist in education. I can say without hesitation that my son would never be floating with that type of group. In fact, my son would have taken action to stop those kids/young adults from ganging on this man in the first place. It may sound like I’m bragging but it’s just stating the truth. And I’m very thankful that my son has a stellar character. So, I’ve put some blame on the kids because this could have all been avoided if they would have been respectful. I hope these survivors have learned this valuable and important lesson to help guide their individual futures. Secondly, my aunt was born in Russia and she experienced unspeakable circumstances. Everyone in her community was truly starving. She said that as people and her family died from starvation their tummy would grow stiff as it got stuck on the back spine. It was brutal. She was very fortunate to get away from that horrific government rule because our American soldiers invaded to free the Jewish people to were still alive during the holocaust. She was rescued and given a clerical job and met my uncle. So, having that information about my aunt has shaped my world view. Therefore, my heart breaks over this tragedy. I also wonder if he has some PTSD because of his apparent fears. That weapon provided some insight into how relatively safe Mr. Mui felt in general. I added this final thought because it took my aunt many years to overcome fears. She explained that her childhood life in school in communists Russia the were told that the United States was an evil and lawless place. The gave unrealistic examples to the children by saying when we formed a line to see a movie that it was normal for someone near the end of the line would just shoot someone to take their place in line. And then there was no law or accountability in our country. It’s my guess that her teachers believed those stories and didn’t realized that they were continually fed propaganda. I understand that the extreme propaganda no longer exist due to information obtained from the internet. However, I wonder if Mr. Mui experienced propaganda in his early life.

I’m a criminal justice major & law student, Peter is right about the American justice system being pretty damn good. There are *many* issues, especially as it relates to racial & class discrimination and mass incarceration, but in most other countries, individual rights & due process are not nearly as important & protected as it is in the U.S. The power we put into defense attorneys and juries is a uniquely American thing. Judges being a mediator (not trier of facts) is a uniquely American thing. We have a plethora of issues that can be (& are) worked on, but we have many rights & protections enshrined that cannot be changed. THAT’S the major distinction.

The guy started baselessly accusing some strangers of stealing, then when they predictably got agitated, pulled out a knife and escalated a dispute into a fight to the death. Everyone involved behaved appallingly (apart from the woman who attempted to de-escalate), but Miu approached with a weapon, was prepared to use it, drew it first and was the only one to produce or use a weapon during the attack, and was the only one to cause serious injuries or death. It's hard to judge what those kids would have done had he not pulled a knife on them, but they had no weapons and didn't cause Miu any notable injuries despite him attacking them with a knife, which would have justified any level of violent response in self defense. Though he doesn't seem dangerous unless provoked, I think this guy carried a weapon at all times and relished a chance to use it in self defence like so many other people, that's why he was smirking when he pulled the knife. He was a ticking time-bomb waiting for an argument so he could gut someone - the definition of a danger to society.

Shame on the bullies. I hope they learned something and realize what they have done to this man. How horrible

Sadly bullies typically don’t care or realize what their behaviors affect.

The judge isn’t the one that got this wrong. The prosecutor did. Justice is his job. Not conviction. He perpetrated a huge injustice on everyone concerned. What will come of those boys’ future living with the guilt of knowing they had a part in the death and pain of their friends, and the life of this man, a good man. They will either whither being eaten up inside or they will live as if nothing matters if that event didn’t matter. And the same for those women that lied, interjected themselves and loudly escalated an already volatile situation so they could swoop in “as the adults” in scene. Yes, nothing at all in this case brought justice. This prosecutor failed many people and many families.

Prosecutor’s job is justice and not conviction? That’s the biggest joke I’ve heard😂 When they look at a case they only look at it from a perspective of whether they have enough evidence to convict someone lo

I still don't think he should have ever been charged... Those grown adults, not kids, should have been charged. Although I feel horrible for the loss of life, the mob mentality needs to be punished.

What if it was your kid that he killed? Isaac didn’t do anything. If it was your kid would you say the same thing? Seriously!

@yomomma123 well if my kid was saying vile things and was being aggressive with his so called friends, instead of walking away, yeah I'd feel the same way. No one wants their kid to be killed but not putting any blame on the little sh*ts who started the whole thing, I'm not the one. They are just as much as fault, if not more, for their friend dying. They should have not tried to be tough guys and kept their vile comments to themselves.

Initially I thought the teens were somehow at fault. Then I watched the entire lengthy court case(9 days). There was so much more to what actually happened. It is such an important lesson on what is really self-defense and reguard for human life. The Jury got it right for Issac and all victims. Time will tell if his time in prison and his behaviors change. He outright lied, made up stories and floated down the river past the scene (in disguise) after stabbing and killing. No reguard for human life.

Words have an impact and consequences, despite the 'right' to speech. I trust these teens have now learned that. Watch your mouth.

Hopefully but kids now a days are disrespectful and feel untouchable. They walked away victims in this unfortunately so they def won’t learn. Nobody respects their elders anymore, not even a thing.

Maybe there would be less crime and criminals attacking innocent people if this verdict found he justifiably used self defense. Im wondering what this judge would have done in the exact same situation?
