This is what I kept saying for years. His first "book" took 3 actual books to finish by the time he got to its end point. The series, if he had kept up at that pace should have 3 books for each of his 3 books, so had he kept writing at the pace of ASOS, he would have had a 9 book, not 7 book series. Because George cannot help but balloon the story. He almost, but not quite got to a point of splitting his second conflict in half. We will never see George's ideal ending to the third conflict, which I have accepted, but at the very least, we will see the ending of the second "book".
@wizardsummoner9124

Three books for the first book? In his original idea the three books would be the War of the Five Kings, Daenerys invasion and the Others' invasion. We're five books in and we barely covered the first one, and I doubt Daenerys finishes the invasion in Winds, at best she starts it. So we're five or six books in and we expect him to finish the story in one or two? Crazy.

a bit tired of this echo chamber of people whinging that he balloons his story, when that ballooning is a huge part of why his story is so fantastic and interesting. @@zeus000.00 Far from being an expert, but google search implies that the fabric or something comparable was known in the middle ages. How it is/was called? No idea, but I am not sure why GRRM should have used the medieval word even if it existed - nobody would have understood. Plus it seems the case that the fabric is used by the military and in outdoor activities for its favourable properties, which in my eyes supports the fabric. Besides, I doubt using actual mole would make too much sense - they are small as finders, you would need a lot of moles for just one glove, and their skin will be rather thin and thus easily break under any nontrivial use.

I mean even if Robert wouldn’t kill Jon, like he didn’t kill aegon and rhaenys, he still approved of it afterwards. So even if he wouldn’t do it someone else could, like Tywin. Or at least Ned might fear that someone else, like Tywin, could kill Jon. And because Robert is married to Cersei and so reliant on Lannister money, he might not condemn or punish it because he is dependent on them. Like with how he is reluctant to do anything after Ned and Jaime’s fight.

A few thoughts on Harry the Heir and bastards: Note that in a feudal society like this, readers seem to falsely assume that men have much say whom they marry. That is not the case. Men have a say _if they are the heads of the household_ - and only then. It is the head of the household who decides who marries whom. So only Littlefinger and Waynwood count. And while I too think that it is some kind of a retcon, it is also explained explicitly in the text that Harry is basically a nobody without any standing, so him marrying Baelishes daughter is probably marrying up even if she is a bastard. Also note that I am not sure if Jon joined the Watch just because he was a bastard. He joined because he felt alone and rejected by his family, and because he was a brash, self-centered teenager who did not think things through. He could just as well have been a younger brother - there seem to have been loads of younger brothers joining the Watch...

On the topic of how the books have changed, I don't think George originally meant to have all the Ironborn/Dornish POV's introduced in AFFC, to remain POV's for the rest of the series. Keep in mind, he initially put them in as a part of a giant prologue in AFFC, back when the book was supposed to span 5 years. But, he didn't want a 200+ page prologue, so he spread out the chapters across the book. The fact that they were in the prologue leads me to believe he didn't intend to have them stick around. That being said, turning that many characters into permanent POV's on a whim seems like a really big decision. It's generally really confusing to try and figure out whatever GRRM was planning at the time.

About it not making sense that Ned would keep Jon’s parentage a secret when he clearly didn’t think that Jon was in any actual danger from Robert - I think Lyanna begged Ned to hide the truth because she believed Robert would murder Jon, and Ned, wanting to ease his sister’s dying moments, promised to do so and then kept his promise out of honour, even though he disagreed with Lyanna about the kind of man Robert was and didn't think the promise was actually necessary to protect Jon. But then in AGoT when he saw how Robert handled the situations with Lady and Dany, he started to think that Lyanna was right and that Robert probably would have killed Jon if he'd known the truth. The tragedy is that he acted on this by making a huge mistake and warning Cersei so that she could save her children from death at Robert’s hands, only to immediately have his faith in his friend vindicated when Robert repented of the Dany assassination plot on his deathbed.

1:39:30 Whatever happens to Ned's bones, I think it has to fit thematically, where the Lannisters ultimately return Ned's bones as a reconciliation with House Stark. We probably see an echo of this in F&B with Aegon's letter from Dorne (I am strongly convinced that the Martells covertly returned Rhaenys bones to Dragonstone. I've heard no other theory that comes close to explaining the facts or fitting thematically: Gyldayn speculates that what brought peace was a threat of violence, but actually proper mourning and closure that brought peace.) Not sure how the return of Ned's bones should work, beyond this... Tyrion probably shouldn't be the one to return them because a) he already returned them to Riverrun and b) his actions are so far removed from the death of Ned and the core of the Stark-Lannister feud that it doesn't fit for him to be the one to end it. Jaime, perhaps? He pushed Bran, attacked Ned in the streets, fought Robb in the Whispering Woods and his character arc is leaning more in a peace-making direction. I certainly don't see Cersei returning the bones; given her relationship with her own father, I can't see her thinking the Stark children would appreciate getting their father's bones back, nor would it occur to her to initiate the gesture. Also, would it work to have some fake Ned bones around? The chain of custody gets broken in the confusion, and we have rival sets of Ned bones where no one alive knows for sure which is really Ned... 1 skeleton is laid to rest at Winterfell, and we readers are left wondering if those are really Ned's bones - the heart-breaking grief and ambiguity would have a very similar feel as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which would be fitting? _Unknown, yet well-known, and buried among kings_

personally, I think grrm didn't talk about his opinions on the end of got bc he still wanted to be professional and even if he gave them the outline, he didn't give them much connective tissue and (probably) felt he was partially to blame for not finishing the story. but with fire and blood (even though there isn't much to the story) they had what is basically an already written and finished script that they just had to follow. and when they start making dumb changes, grrm sees the writing on the wall for another bullshit ending and already being frustrated about season 8 he just couldn't keep his mouth shut. now, this pet theory doesn't account for why he hasn't said anything about it now that we're years removed. to me that would have been priority #1, but maybe he feels it's just been too long now to bring it up, or he doesn't want the inevitable backlash of people shitting on him for the bad ending being ultimately his fault for not finishing the series.

Why Ned wouldn't tell Cat or anyone else about Jon's true parentage... I think it relates back to Lyanna's promises. At the time of Lyanna's death, Ned and Robert's relationship was broken due to how cool Robert was with the deaths of Rhaegar and Elia's children - of course he and Lyanna would be terrified for the safety of Rhaegar's child. I guess one of those deathbed vows was to pretend that Jon was Ned's bastard, and to not tell a soul (perhaps except Benjen or Jon? One of the possible triggers for Ned's ToJ dreams is finding out Benjen is missing - perhaps Benjen was supposed to tell Jon once he swore his Night's Watch vows, and Ned is freaking out that this promise will go unfulfilled?) Ned maintained the lie because a promise is a promise, even if he no longer believed Lyanna's worries were valid; or Ned was worried that someone would try to kill Jon to win favor with Robert, so the fewer people know the truth, the safer Jon is?

2:46:25 So 2 crazy Tower of Joy theories: Theory 1: Rhaegar and Lyanna swapped places, glamoured with the rubies and winter roses. 'Rhaegar's final words weren't "I love you, Lyanna", they were "Robert you idiot, its me, Lyanna", but Robert doesn't hear, and unknowingly kills the woman he loves in his quest the save her. The theory breaks down completely at the Tower of Joy, though. Lyanna would have to give birth much sooner, then be leading an army postpartum, while Rhaegar dies of prophecy-itis... doesn't work well. Theory 2: As a kid, Lyanna found a dragon egg in the crypts of Winterfell. GRRM has seeded hints of something in the crypts and lore about dragons visiting Winterfell. At Harrenhal, Rhaegar found out she had an egg, and that's what spurred his interest in her (did the Targs have eggs post-Summerhall? If they did, Viserys and Dany would've brought them into exile, surely?) Then Ned either left the egg in the cairns,bro ught it to Starfall, threw it overboard or its in Lyanna's tomb? I'm not sure if there's room left in the story for a 4th dragon to hatch
