So strange looking at lava eruptions in housing areas and in lush jungle, when I usually associate that activity with large cone volcanoes. Shield volcanoes are definitely a different phenomenon.
@punapeter
6 жыл бұрын
this is a rift, a finger, not the volcano, lava tubes honeycomb this island from previous flows over and over on top of each other.
@Kayspod
6 жыл бұрын
I don't think you got what I was saying. I'm aware it's a rift, but the rifts are associated with the shield volcano, and it is lava erupting in a place unusual for me to see because I'm usually watching Stromboli type volcanoes. For me, it's incredible to see that happening in someone's back yard.

Trees and their roots trapped under lava flows can cause those steam eruptions when they are super heated and the steam finally escapes.

The extreme rainfall (it literally rains there everyday and is the rainiest place in the usa) means that there is a shallow water table.

The steam eruptions are happening up at the volcano, which is miles away from Leilani Estates, and the fissures. Not coming from the fissures. Also, I agree with richard vaughn, saying how much rain we get here on this side. The western side, where Kailua-Kona is doesn't get nearly as much as we do on east side.

If the sulphur is very strong, at least taking a bath in soda will counter act the caustic properties of the sulphur. Continued breathing exposure that eventually cause infection, is because the lung tissue is being burned (melted) by caustic effects. Baking soda will balance the pH in the lungs to prevent damage and possible scaring. And having acidic blood isn't great either. It cant be good for someone breathing this day and night. Just trying to be very thoughtful of peoples well being.

You can just drive 20 miles and be safe. All of the volcanic activity is happening on the far southeastern part of the island. This is the most tropical part with rainfall every day and ferns and coconut palm trees everywhere. The western part of the island consists of dry grasslands and the northern part is a blend between the two. The fissures are along a crack on the island where the newest part of the island is slowly sliding into the sea. The crack allows the lava to flow through like a pipe where it empty out into the sea underwater near where the island ends and abruptly drops off to the sea floor.

Yup Richard is right. The only thing to really worry about is how the gas will effect crops and animals. Lots of people in Puna are self reliant. That is going to be the big concern. That and the people who chose not to leave their property, which is their choice. Some of those people have spent over 20 years building up their property. If they are middle aged and have done this, then there is almost no time for them to rebuild, especially if they are doing permaculture since it can take 10 to 20 years to achieve the same result. So to some people losing their life's work is just as bad as dying. Other people have already left. also people dont realize what pahoehoe is. Its such a fluid type of lava. Its not going to cause a large scale eruption. The worse that can happen it maybe in a hundred or more years a small piece of the island will slide into the ocean. Not all at once but slowly over time. Other than that this has been going on for years. Just look at pahoa last year. Most people outside of hawaii dont even know that alot of what we are seeing right now is almost a daily thing here. Its the earthquake that got the worlds attention. But we have those from time to time too. even during eruptions. Mainland people are making a bigger deal out of this than they should be. They don't realize that Kilauea is a pimple of a volcano and big island is actually just that, BIG. They don't realize this is nothing new to us. Its just new to you guys because you never seen it before, and most people tend over extrapolate something they don't fully understand. We have been documenting the part of the island that is sliding into the ocean for many years. Kilauea has been erupting for over 30 years, and we have lava creeping up through fissures ever since. Whats actually happening is exactly what Richard said. The lava is just going to the ocean and will eventually spill over. Remember the lava is slowly trying to reach Loihi(the newest and next island in the chain). If you know where Loihi is located its quite obvious whats happening. Loihi is located just of the south east coastline exactly where this is taking place. This is where the hotspot is moving, and kilaueas lava is moving there as we speak. Remember this too, the fissures are actually important. The fissures are the reason so much pressure is getting released, helping prevent any large eruption. This is why Kilauea doesnt have any large eruptions. It has many small ones over a period of time until it relaxes. Also remember kilauea in its relaxed state is still an eruption volcano and has been for 30 years. We know more about this volcano than almost any other on earth because of how much we get to study it.

It is all or none with you both. The island is going no where, but the hilna slump maybe sliding into the sea. The hilna slump is NOT 100 miles wide nor is it the size of little states combined as someone else stated. The fissures along the line going toward the se amount 22 so far and thwards the west have started to go to. That is why the observatory got evacuated, the split broke the water supply and has split some of hwy 11. If that goes the run up will hit kona and hilo.
@punapeter

everyone guessing, from off island, and didn't even google earth for perspective. The island isn't splitting or sinking, jesus people are uneducated.
