Amazing too how many 100+ year old houses are still standing because the wood was so much better. I have an old house like that, the timbers in the floor joists and in the roof rafters are amazing, the rings in the thick wood is spectacular. Porches still good. 100 year old trees in 3 differed yards. Plaster walls imperfections are pure history. I love my old “Creaky House”. Been watching since day one. I am from Ga. And love the progress in saving the old Byrd Farm.

When are you going to do some work on the exterior of that farm house? I've been renovating and doing new build homes for over 30 years those old houses are very interesting to me, seeing the older construction methods compared to the present really does tell us all exactly what the builders had to overcome in older times with the limited tools and knowledge that they had to work with. Wish ya luck on your project be safe.

We started using tractor tires filled with dirt to plant in. We got tired of fighting the weeds. Halfway through the summer I would give up weeding a regular garden.

Here in Atlantic County, NJ we have a farm about 5 minutes down the road, that puts in a cotton patch every year, right near the road. Down in Cumberland County there is a farm with a cotton patch that I have seen also. Yup, as soon as you started unscrewing a lightbulb, the screen went black, but I could still hear you.

Nice garden. Love turnips! Beautiful turkey! Don’t eat Gary.😮 if you hang a few plastic bottles with sugar water, or beer early in the season, the pests will go in and die. Just keep putting the juice in all summer

I just think it’s interesting that the sign mentions the Boll Weevil without any mention of the sharecroppers who were picking the cotton basically for free. Also, that the increased invasion of the boll weevil may be linked to the great migration since the issue caused loss of jobs and shared farmland property began being taken from black people. This is when Black Americans started moving north to look for jobs with the hopes of a better life. The sign makes it seem like the industry was booming with the help of only manufacturing machinery but this is not how the industry was built. I like this channel but this is disturbing to me.
@THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG
Ай бұрын
As the great grandson and grandson of share croppers, I understand. And you’re absolutely right about the great migration being caused by the immediate lack of land, jobs and farming as the cotton industry abruptly ended with the arrival of the boll weevil in Georgia. Something that often gets discussed on my other channel Adventures Into History. All that being said, this sign comes from the boll weevil eradication board, and their primary focus is solely the boll weevil.
