Which is better, Portugal or Spain?
Where is it better to live, in Portugal or Spain? Know the best option for you to live?
For this video I used data from Eurodicas, World Bank, PORDATA and Bloomberg Healthiest.
In this video I will make a comparison between two countries of the Iberian Peninsula.
I will compare the cost of living, salary, employment, visa and residence, what it is like to live and other points that will help you in the decision, this is the list of topics that I will present.
Despite being neighboring countries, they are very different in some aspects and very similar in others.
My name is Silverio Kist and this is the Kist channel in Europe.
Size of each country
Let's start with the territorial and population dimension.
Portugal is very small, with only 92,212 square kilometers in length and a population of 10.28 million inhabitants (2019 census).
Spain is 505.99 square kilometers long and has 46.94 million inhabitants (2019 census).
Therefore, in terms of territory, the
What is it like to live in Portugal?
Living in Portugal means having a quieter, safer life, with less agitation and perhaps less need for self-promotion, exhibitionism and consumerism.
It's learning to work to live and not live to work, that is, living in Portugal is having quality of life. And I can say from experience that it really is all of that!
Our cultures tend to be closer together. It's far from being the same, but we have many traits in common and perhaps the greatest example is the Portuguese language, you know?
What is it like to live in Spain?
Living in Spain is like immersing yourself in a happy, rich and seductive culture.
It's going out to eat tapas and drink wine, take a siesta after lunch, admire Flamenco and much more.
Although the culture differs, there is one thing that Spaniards and Brazilians have in common: receptivity. You know that side of us where we are very cheerful, like to make friends and go out to have fun? Spaniards are the same! In this aspect, Brazilians are more Spanish than Portuguese.
Where are the best job opportunities?
The market of both countries has hit the brakes, although both countries have evolved a lot in GDP per capita since entering the European Community, it has not evolved much since 2010.
According to PORDATA, the unemployment rate in Portugal closed the year 2021 with a percentage of 6.58%, within its historical average.
In Spain, which had not yet recovered 100% from the crisis that hit Europe in 2008, its situation worsened. The country closed the year 2020 with an unemployment rate of 16.13% and in July 2022 it has an index of 12.48% according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Despite the unemployment rate in both countries, opportunities exist. It may be more difficult to place in the job market at this time, but adapting the resume to the European model and keeping an eye on the vacancies available on job sites in Portugal or on job sites in Spain, can yield an opportunity.
Minimum and average wages
When it comes to minimum and average wages, Spain is ahead of Portugal.
In Portugal the minimum wage is 740.83 euros while in Spain the value is 1050 euros, having a purchasing power 42% higher than the Portuguese.
The average salary in Portugal is 1314 euros while in Spain it is 1751 euros, 33% higher than the Portuguese average.
So, in terms of pay, Spain has a significant advantage.
Best country to raise money
Portugal is definitely not a country to get rich, but Spain may not be that country either.
Both value quality of life and neither culture lives for work. Comparing the two, it would be better to opt for Spain.
However, if you really want to save money, it would be better to aim at countries like England, Netherlands and Germany, where salaries are much higher.
Which has the best climate, Portugal or Spain?
Both countries have a mild climate compared to the whole of Europe. However, Portugal comes out ahead for having more pleasant temperatures in both summer and winter.
Portugal's territorial extension is small, but don't be fooled, as the climate can vary greatly between regions.
In the Algarve, south of Portugal, there are 300 days of sunshine a year and a super pleasant climate, even in winter. In the central region, Lisbon and surroundings, the temperature is milder, despite the hot summer.
