Birgit said something that is sticking with me, when talking about the schools of thought surrounding death of the author. That a photograph should stand for itself without the story behind it. As an individual photographer who is not filming my process like either of our hosts, my process straight up doesn’t matter to anyone looking at my photographs. But as someone who spends a lot of time thinking about and developing their process (sometimes literally) it’s what I’m most interested in talking about. I think I will approach it differently from now on. Thank you.

Currently doing some advanced photo retouching this afternoon (which is quite a new thing for me, actually) and that Mamiyamigos serie is probably be binged in one sitting. This is really fun AND interesting, which is something some podcasts don't get, so I say bravo! * clap clap like Leo in the Wolf of Wall Street *

My best tip for taking portraits, do the lighting first if it’s in studio, if it’s out on location know what sports get good light at what times and then it’s not something on your mind when shooting and the only thing you have to worry about is connecting with the subject. I like to setup little interviews with whoever I’m shooting and spend time getting them Into conversation and forgetting about the camera I’ll keep popping off a ton of shots whilst I’m talking to them but i will always keep their focus on me and the conversation so that the results feel candid even tho they’re quite clearly setup images.

an intersection between art and artist's intent/background vs. impact, edward hopper/nighthawks, writing and photography, and capturing melancholy: The Lonely City by Olivia Laing touches on all of these. the central theme is loneliness in a big city - specifically new york - and how various artists from the city captured it in their work, and how their own loneliness permeated that. Edward Hopper's chapter is the first one, and Laing points out something interesting: though his work is mostly characterized as lonely, he was very evasive, almost in denial about it in the scarce interviews he did. I suspect he didn't really intend his paintings to be *lonely* (they were just scenes he happened to pass by during a commute or walk around the city) but perhaps the loneliness of his life found its way in anyway. The book also explores Andy Warhol and Davide Wojnarowicz' life and work and loneliness, among other artists. I think it's a good read especially when you're maybe figuring out how to capture loneliness in visual art.
