It seems like Rob might have been really nervous to answer the questions fully and give his honest answer for fear of overstepping a boundary or privacy or hurting Lauren's feelings...maybe I was reading his nervousness completely wrong but maybe it would help if he had a Q&A that wasn't live where he could have time to think about the answers and how to answer them fully but in a respectful way that still honors Lauren....just a thought.

I have schizoaffective, and for a small period of time i stopped taking my med because i felt like i was doing good. But then I got really depressed, and decided to go to a psychiatrist. She told me I needed to be on the med because I could have another nervous breakdown (I think this is psychosis?) and it is really damaging to the brain. When I heard this it really was a good motivation to me to take meds because I don't want to damage my brain.

Extremely helpful video! In regards to the question from the mother asking how her son would be when he's released from the hospital, in my experience my son was released (all three times, the first two hospitalizations said there was nothing wrong) before he was ready. In fact the last time he was released, from the hospital that finally aknowleged a diagnosis, had their personel drive him back to our area, three hours away without our knowledge (he's 20 years old) and literally dropped him on the street. He was homeless for a week before we found him. The mental health system in the US is horrible. We have struggled with this nightmare for nine months now and are only now learning how to navigate this illness. This channel has been the biggest resource we have found!

Hello Rob, You are a more loving, intelligent, industrious man than I am and I love you. I am so delighted that you love Lauren. I love science and engineering in the way you love Lauren and I guess I live in a cold world and while I took care of both my parents when they needed all that from 2008 living here in this house with them I would never feel I am a loving warm man like you are. My Dad died June 20 2011 and Mammy died February 13 2014. My brother and two sisters who are all parents unlike me praise me for the care I gave my parents when they needed it so I am not I guess when it comes to warm loving a hopeless case. I care deeply about the poor and the criminals who come from the ranks of the poor and I give a notable percentage of my modest weekly income from the state to beggars. I have what's called a Non-Contributory State Pension the most basic pension there is but I am so delighted to have it. I was hospitalised three times May 1987, October 1988 and November 2007 having delusions of grandeur one of as you know the many symptoms of schizophrenia the worst and most dangerous symptom being paranoia. I will have to take a drug called Dolmatil till the end of my life but now at long last at 66 I have never been as happy as I am today and feeling better and happier every day. Say hello to Lauren and do not be offended when I urge you to make sure Lauren takes her prescribed medication every day. This doesn't necessarily guarantee that she will never again develop psychosis when for example people who have bipolar will be hospitalised even if they are still taking the meds. I am so blessed that so long as I take the Dolmatil I will be just fine and I know for certain that I had the second and third psychotic episodes for no other reason than I had stopped taking the Dolmatil. It was as simple as that. However while I will no matter what take Dolmatil every day till the end of my life healing came into my life in February 2011 in a precisely defined moment as if someone came into my bedroom tapped me on the shoulder and told me that that healing had just begun. It didn't happen like that but I knew for certain that it had and when I finished getting undressed for bed I sat on the edge of the bed that night at 20:00 and hands outstretched gave thanks that I have been doing every day since then. @@aaymathebest4705 Hello Aayma, I had stress induced psychosis and I was hospitalised three times 1987, 1988 and 2007. I have to take a drug Dolmatil(sulpiride) every single day and I know for a fact that if I do not take this drug I will almost certainly have another psychotic episode although now that I'm 67 the chances are that it's less likely that this will happen. However no way no how will I stop taking this medication and I will take it every day till I die whenever that happens nobody knows. I just want to say that schizophrenia is a disease even if the latest thinking is that it's not a simple clear cut thing at all and that our environment may play a huge role in our developing schizophrenia later in life. I advise you to read you about all this using Google and to look out for TV documentaries that I have already watched myself. If someone has heart disease you wouldn't say something like they are a diseased heart and in that same way people can have schizophrenia when it's not right at all to call them schizophrenics. People can suffer from schizophrenia but apart from that they are whole multi-faceted human beings. All the best, Peter. Dublin.

as someone who has taken care of a loving partner who has schizophrenia years ago, and now my son... i can relate to Rob's difficulty in answering some of the questions. you see, sometimes one thing will work to help your romantic partner and sometimes it won't. things change. but there also is an ongoing thread that you can start to build on through the episodes. but you can't predict what that thread will be for different people because each relationship is so unique. i would suggest that gentleness and just being there with your loved one... trying to build the trust between the two of you... not talking too much during episodes... and asking your struggling loved one what you can do to help are all possibly helpful ways to start with. watch out for their safety during these times. get them to hospital when it's necessary and don't feel guilty about it. yes, you are taking them somewhere they don't want to be, but they will get better faster because of your efforts on their behalf. you will figure out some real good ways to help him/her. trust yourself. your love will help you to do that. one thing i do know is that both of these people in my life who suffer with these issues know and knew that i was the one who was looking out for them. even though there were times when they couldn't quite see it in some episodes. you have to expect things like this and not take it personally. and that is hard to do. thank you Rob for reminding me of some important things. like self care. again, gentle hugs.

Having to deal with a family member in so far as them not wanting to take meds is the most difficult and frustrating situation I have ever had to deal with. My son really doesn't except he has an illness and it's so hard. It is very difficult for me to watch this video honestly. As every persons Schizophrenia symptoms and intensity can vary I struggle with the idea of Anosognosia. Most the time it feels like a power struggle of “who knows best” or even Gaslighty . I experienced this in my prior living situation/dynamic with my parents who were very pro medicine.(I am not denying that it can help) but now that I live on my own and am successfully sustaining without medication I at times question whether the fact that my living situation with my parents was only “successful” because they felt good about me being on medicine because it was what they wanted and needed to “do what’s best for me”. Power dynamics play a huge role in mistreatment of the mentally ill in psych wards as well. My 2 cents.

I'm diagnosed schizoaffective (previously schizophrenic) and I agree that most people / doctors aren't supportive of zero pharmaceuticals. It sort of makes sence sence, its just plain easier for them. They worry about about us when we're off meds. They also don't have to deal with as many of our symptoms (if and when they occur). They also don't deal (And most have never experienced), antipsychotic medication side-effects. So to a lot of unafflicted people it seems like a no brainer. I myself am not on medication currently, and continue to attempt to be med free. I have gone off meds a lot. Had one year med free not long ago. I, myself, since the last few years, have been able to know when it is time to go back on meds / get checked out. However, some people afflicted with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders can lack the ability to acknowledge this fact. It took me years to get this good at maintaining awareness of symptoms, but it still can be sloppy at times, for lack of a better word. Again, it IS worrisome to loved ones when they see our symptoms. I feel its a touchy subject since it is sort of a biological aversion to being made to put something in my body that I dont want to, but i do understand why other people feel the way they do. The sad thing is, and most caregivers dont even realize it, when someone is trying to control my medication, i myself, don't tell them when I'm off. Which I know is the last thing they want, but in my mind it avoids worrying them, and the arguements that can ensue.
@jademosier5429

Adam Mayer Yes, great point, it is definitely a no brainer for psychiatrists, caregivers, and family members as they wish to receive the benefit of having someone who is easier to manage, but they don’t deal with the side effects. They don’t fully consider our feelings... the pros for them are worth it. I have bit the bullet for many years taking medication that I didn’t want to for the sake of relationships(in my case my parents) I cant deny that it is worrisome when you see your kid has stopped speaking and being blunted. I just think that there has to be continued improvement on how the mentally ill are treated and treatment options. we’ve come quite a way from sterilization in psych wards and other inhumane treatment but I still think we could improve on treating the mentally ill with dignity. We’re people too after all. I think that their has to be more out there and better options. (I am trying out a supplement called Sarcosine that has been shown to help improve cognitive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia)

Good channel and respect for putting yourself out there. But you are wrong some times. Yes it is possible to be "cured" from schizophrenia and not rely on medication for the rest of your life. Knowing if you can go of medication is almost impossible and only do it with a psychiatrist. The diagnosis is more of an spectrum disorder and probably in the future DSM will change the label. And by spectrum disorder I mean people who have schizophrenia are completely different in how the illness is and of course the personality is different to. I personally know of a few people that is cured. On can have one psychosis and some symptoms and that's it. To different person can have multiple psychosis and hear voices 24/7. 🙂
