A simple yet effective way to create momentum in each bar is to use rhythmic runs. I demonstrate this over a 4 chord progression in E. Intermediate level
I'm in one of those situations where I play by ear and I know what I know, but I'm not sure why I know it lol. Watching your videos has helped put me in the mindset to improve on my chord expression rather then just hammering them out. I've been playing for 15 years now and I must say finding these has renewed my interest in playing. The way you break down the techniques into the basics makes me wish I had something like this back when I started. I'm subscribing and will definitely be watching.

Glad I can renew your interest! One thing that may help is to record yourself and listen to your own playing. It's often hard to hear what you're really playing while you're focused on playing it, so a simple recording made on your phone will help you spot obvious weaknesses. It could be something simple as noticing that every bar has no expression and is being played too loudly, or there's no differentiation between the LH and RH volume. Or you hear yourself playing the same pattern too much.

I am a beginner, not at the level that can learn from your fast lessons. But i enjoy watching your vids. Your free lessons are more much far more valuable than alot of charged lessons.

Melodic is more of using the notes in the scale to embellish the chords being played to emphasize them. Rhythmic is more for a powerful feeling of a strong cadence.

E|F#m|A|B can you explicit your chord ? Is it 7th or 9th that you are playing ? Thanks !

The melodic run is like a mini melody - it has a bunch of interesting notes that sound good, so you'd be aiming for cool notes like the 2nd 7th etc to form this short "tune". The rhythmic run acts more like a drum fill so the choice of notes is not so important. It's normally constructed from the existing notes you've just played in the chord combined with a couple of notes in the LH.

Unlike a new student who can possibly hear what needs improving but doesn't know how to do anything about it, you, with 15 years experience will have the ability and skill to make some changes.

Thanks Prancer. I used to write my own songs but these days, I don't have the time and therefore resort only to spontaneously creating music as I play. Unfortunately, I don't always remember what I've played by the next day!

I have purchased your lesson pack, and am currently practicing lesson # 3; as well as the first 2 sets of jazz chords. I have had so much trouble 'dressing up' my chords and chord changes, and this lesson has really opened me up to the possibilities. Thanks so much! I am a super-fan of your work. Keep it up - please, & I will keep practicing.

I can play it pretty well, but I've committed the whole thing to muscle memory. I would love to be able to play it with any chord sequence/inversions but I always panic when the next chord is coming up.

At 3:52 you are writing out 4 16 notes however when you play it looks like you are starting the run on the 'a' of 3. Such as 3 e AND a (the a). So it sounds like 5 notes are playing? ! also, what is the difference between a rhythmic run and a melodic run?
@quaverbox
6 жыл бұрын
Very well picked up! You're absolutely right. I wrote down four 16th notes starting on the 4th beat, but when I played, I added an extra 16th note in front of it. So I started my run/fill on the 3.75 beat, which as you mentioned, is the "a" of "3 e AND a". Because this was a live lesson for my student, they're used to me describing one thing, then playing something slightly modified. The rhythmic run is when you create a run roughly using the same notes that you played in the preceding chord voicing, i.e. you don't go out of your way to create a melody - you're just breaking up the chord to create a percussive effect. When you play a melodic run, you might think more specifically of aiming for the 7th or the 2nd etc to create a desired melodic effect. The difference between the two runs may not be very noticeable - it's just a slightly different approach of constructing the run.
