Cory, you hit the nail on the head with getting burned out. My 7 and 9 year old got into fish a couple of years ago. I fully immersed myself in the hobby. We started with a 40 breeder and quickly grew to a total of 6 aquariums doing water changes every week and doing something to an aquarium every day. I burned out after only about a year. Water changes went to once every couple of months, feedings every two or three days, etc. Now, I'm getting my kids more involved so that they can do more to help me. I'm down to 3 tanks and I'm going to water changed every 2-3 weeks and start teaching the kids more about how to do things to help me out, so that they can also appreciate the fish more.

I did for 14 years after bucket changing a 250 gallon chiclid tank. Was happy never to touch it again. Decade later and new husband mentioned fish. - A mistake he was completely unprepared for. When I do have tanks, always keeping a betta to keep me engaged (they are more a pet then a fish as they seem to look forward to visits, learn tricks, and are curious about anything you show them) -- a school of fish that want nothing to do with me are a nice decoration to steward.... but someday I may have to get an Oscar for the PET portion of the hobby. --- also, in about a year I want to start a dirt tank and see if I can get kne balanced. If that goes well my other 3 will follow - and viola! A pet who's poop I don't have to pick up!

With regards to shopping: I have a toddler, and Target pickup is a LIFESAVER! My husband is into MTG and was extremely competitive in hearthstone. He loves to play home brew commander stuff with friends, and has a "cube" built based on the "un" sets, but was competitive, early on. It's fun to hear the similar interests in such an unrelated area. I really just like hearing the random fish talk and thinking about what I'd like to do when I have a little more time and focus!

Something that helped me is I don't own a water test kit.. I don't stress over it. I feed my many plants, change 20% water 1 a week only because I add Fertilizers. I just sit in front of my tank up close and personal and observe each plant, plant leaf color, plant tips and edges. Same with the fish. Sit and look at the detail. Each fin, body condition, color and behavior. Ride the wave of nature. Don't try and control nature. If you test, then you want to control. Don't control, just nudge.

Great stream, caught it on the replay. The starting question here made me think of something I don't think I've seen discussed much if at all among the different fish channels. There's video upon video of what fish sizes work together, how many to put in a tank, but I've not seen what I'll call fish over time. From what I understand you can't just dump 30 fish into a 40gal tank at the same time and some (Like otos) need an established tank. So I think it'd be interesting hearing more about water stability and how quick you can stock a tank. Bonus points for planted vs non-planted affect on stability and stocking

Your videos are always so timely. I noticed one of my tanks was getting cloudy and this inspired me to go ahead and test it (with coop strips) and the nitrate and nitrite pads turned pink so fast I thought it was an error and did another strip. I’ve never had any of my tanks go that high, esp with nitrites! Poor li’l fishies! I think the air from the sponge filter and some salt I had in there kept them going. Definitely a good reminder to test!!

Respect to your wife Cory. A person that gives a rescue dog a loving home for the rest of its life is a person with a good heart :0) On the new puppy subject, I’d be aware of the affect on the elderly dog. A new to the home high energy puppy could make the rest of the elderly dogs life very stressful. Occasionally a young dog can bring new life into an old dog but I feel it would be too much for the little dog that takes life slow in the cuddle blanket I see on your knee :9/ X x

Burn out is a real thing and I totally agree with you about dialing things back..I got burned out after running 10 tanks for a couple years…I started slacking on tank maintenance and it was like a domino affect from then on until I really couldn’t stand looking at my tanks anymore..Well I ended up taking down 6 of the tanks and just decided that quality over quantity was a much better option for me…Now after being burned out for like a year I’m loving the hobby more then I ever have after dialing things back #Dialthingsback #qualityoverqauntity

Ok just tuned in. I have a bull mastiff and I've had many dogs in my life. Bull Mastif, 5 stars. Best dog I've ever loved. Loyal, constant companion, checks perimeter of property every time she wakes up 3×'s a day unless a stranger is in the area, or anyone comes into the house. Just had to say slobber is the only bad thing about this breed. On fish, I think if their habitat stays level and no spikes or anything regulation of a daily routine and a stress free environment is key to optimal health.

I want to start a native Wisconsin micro-ecosystem with opossum shrimp, snails, scuds, rainbow darters, red side dace, and possibly willow cats. All local plants ofc. My goal is no water change, no filter no feed. 40-75 gallons. I'm probably going to wind up with a toxic swamp in my living room. Any tips?

Hey Cory, sorry a little late to the stream lol. I found your problem with auto dosing very interesting, have you tried to stock each pond with roughly the same amount of plants in order to normalize plant bio load so that you only have to change the auto dosage variable? In labs here at my university we ran a similar scenario except with food for bacteria that were fed glucose.

Aquarium coop might consider doing an OEM probiotic/bacteria formula. there are many suppliers with aqua culture formulas for fish that improve water / digestion / breeding etc. this has worked great for me in all tanks, fry and adults. stabilizes water and improves overall health. I know there are alot of liquid formulas on the hobby mkt, but powder works much better for me, kept in freezer and presoaking before adding to tank, would be beneficial for your clientele.

43.34 - 48.51 Corys comments on co2 are interesting and (as in previous videos Co-Op videos where he has spoke on the topic), the advice or example given runs counter to most ‘planted tank’ specialists advice is. Therefore I have kind of discarded his co2 comments. However, his normal stance is critical thinking and reasoned out so I’d really like to see more detailed explanation of his opinion on the topic - having the 800 gallon right there to see the effect of ‘lower than normally advised’ co2 is just a great way to get his way of thinking understood.

maybe a better solution for adding Ca is Calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2; it will add calcium but is not a carbonate so does not screw with the hardness of the water and allows you to more easily buffer for pH. i am not sure if this is correct regarding improving snail shells, but Calcium hydroxide is used in aquaponics often to raise pH. the thing holding back the aquarium hobby is clear accurate scientific info on how to manage water and environment. it is a hobby and most of the info is someone's best guess. has not much to do with the cos to equipment.\, has to do with the theory and working principles of how that equipment is developed. costs would probably decrease if equipment was developed more efficiently

I only have fish room science. Meaning we've seen it happen in our fish room and store. Basically no air stone, no co2, no pearling. Add an air stone to the planted tank, with no other changes, pearling started to happen. What we can't quantify is, is more co2 getting in, or is there more oxygen now in the water and thus, the oxygen the plants were releasing is just now visible.
