All eyes are on the Gulf of Mexico this week where Tropical Storm Helene churns and continues to strengthen.
However, for today, the latest models runs are picking up at clusters of showers and storms popping up here in central Georgia this evening and continuing into the overnight hours. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of our northwestern half under a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for any stronger thunderstorms that will pack a punch with gusty winds and heavy rain. This is from an approaching front to the west, not Helene.
Outer bands from the current Tropical Storm Helene will start early Thursday morning. We won't continuously see rain all day long on Thursday, as there will be some briefs breaks during the afternoon. However, as we move through the evening and Helene approaches landfall, that's when the heaviest rain and fastest winds will approach closer to the eye of Helene.
The center of the storm will move over central Georgia during the overnight hours into Friday and continue into early Friday morning. The storm will move very fast through central Georgia, and hopefully get out by the 7-8 a.m. hours on Friday. It is worth noting that this is just the latest run of Futureview and it has the center going over our eastern half. This would be the best case scenario for us as the east side and severe weather risk would remain largely to the east of central Georgia. However, the cone still has many areas to our west included for a possible track, so we will likely see some variation in this path.
For now, the Storm Prediction Center has almost all of our counties in a Level 1 risk for severe weather, while our southeastern counties are included in a Level 2 risk and areas near to coast are now in a Level 3.
As of now, heavy rain and gusty winds look very likely for impacts. The intensity of these impacts will depend mainly on which side of the storm pushes through central Georgia, with stronger impacts lying on the "dirty side." As of now, the main window for the gustiest winds will be late Thursday night overnight into Friday morning.
By Friday afternoon, what's left of Helene will quickly move into north Georgia, making way for a nice Friday night and a great weekend, and we deserve one after a busy next few days weather wise.
