Barcelona has reportedly decided on its next manager next manager. The decision could be good news for Liverpool, with Rúben Amorim the favorite to move to Anfield.
Barcelona has reportedly identified its next manager, and it's not Liverpool target Rúben Amorim.
Instead, the Catalan giants are set to appoint club legend Rafa Márquez, who has been managing Barca's B team for the past two seasons. This development could be a boost for Liverpool's plans to potentially appoint Amorim.
Márquez, 45, is no stranger to success at Barcelona, having won two Champions League titles and four La Ligas during his playing days. With current boss Xavi set to depart at the end of the season, Márquez has been dubbed 'The Chosen One' by Barcelona's top brass and is keen to take on the role, according to Catalan outlet Sport.
This leaves the path clear for Liverpool to pursue Amorim, who is on track to lead Sporting CP to its second league title in just four full seasons under his management. The 39-year-old Portuguese recently dismissed rumors of a verbal agreement to replace Jürgen Klopp at Anfield, but speculation continues to swirl about a potential summer move to one of Europe's top clubs.
Previously, it was suggested that Barcelona had intensified their pursuit of Amorim, viewing the former Benfica midfielder as the perfect replacement for Xavi. Other names such as Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi and ex-Bayern Munich and Germany coach Hansi Flick have also been linked with the job.
However, following Barcelona's disastrous Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, Sport reports that Márquez is ready and waiting to take over from Xavi. Despite the Barca board's attempts to persuade Xavi to reconsider his decision, he reaffirmed his stance after Tuesday's 4-1 defeat in the second leg.
