I miss alcohol sometimes, a scotch with a cigar for example, more rarely a red wine with some meals. What I don't miss is rolling the dice to see whether three drinks would make me Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde. I'm thankful I never had a physical addiction or cravings, so temptation is a non-issue for me. I still pour scotch for my wife - and I take a nice long sniff of the scent too. :) As for hacking/hacked/cursed drinks, try this one the next time you can't sleep: make a mug of double-strength Almond Sunset (Cel. Seas.) herb tea, using milk instead of water. add 0.5 oz - 1.5oz (up to a shot) of Amaretto. For some, it will sound digusting. Others' stomachs can't handle dairy + ethanol. But for me... it was a good knock-out potion with no hangover. It's a nightcap, not something for the clubs, ferpetesakes. ^_^

Dry July sounds better... Fruit juice and yeast is fine... but you really need to back sweeten it, even if you just pour and mix and leave it for 2 weeks. A better one/way for most people is 1-quart juice, 1-cup of sugar, 1/4-tsp yeast, shake and leave it for a month, pour off, and drink. Add/lessen the sugar amount to suit your taste in future batches.

I don't drink much, but still enjoyed this talk a lot. As far as surface area for the wood sticks go, do you have any thoughts of turning the wood into sawdust, sonicating that, and then filtering it off? Also, do you pay attention to the temperature of the stuff in the ultrasonic system at all? The sonicator I use at the lab can get its contents pretty hot after just a few minutes. Running that long you may actually be evaporating some of the alcohol off. Also, have you seen the Ultrasonic Video by The Thought Emporium? I have a SodaStream, and I considered getting an adaptor to use cheaper CO2. Question is, is the cheaper CO2 food grade, or does it have higher levels of benzene and other petroleum combustion by products, or methane, or other gases? Where does industrial CO2 come from? I'm naively trusting that SodaStream wants to protect their brand so they use clean sources or filter it, I'm probably a sucker but I don't use up the CO2 that fast anyway. Annoyed that they phased out the big bottles, and will be happy to get an adaptor to larger CO2 bottles if I can be sure I'm not charging up my water with carcinogens.

I do not like the taste of alcohol. Which is quite normal for all animals, since it is actually a poison. Yes, dosis fecit venenum, but with alcohol, you feel the effects and thus it is already in a concentration that will have physiological consequences. So, when you first tried ANY alcohol. you hated it. It did not taste good. Your body told you "Do not consume this, it's not good for you.". You had to get accustomed to the taste by telling yourself that this is what all the cool kids drink so you just have to persevere. Or, if you were older, you told yourself, that wine/whiskey/rum/takeyourpick is something exclusive only real connoisseurs can cherish and to be a member of that club, you need to follow the same cult. I appreciate the effects of alcohol, but the taste kills everything it touches and no amount of sugar can dull this crap. I try different drinks from time to time, but it ends the same every time. It tastes like cleaning my work bench. But maybe I am just genetically favored to be able to withstand drugs. I have no inclination to smoke tobacco, because it stinks like heck. And do not start with anything more addictive, like opiates etc. When MJ would not smell like a$$ in cheap rubber, maybe I would try that. It's by far the least addictive and dangerous drug readily available. Alcohol rates even higher than cocaine: more addictive, more destructive and not to mention the socio-social implications. But what do I want to bring to the table here? Actually, I just want tell you how extremely ridiculous I find it, when grown people talk about the artificially inflated importance of some bad drug and seem to feel very superior when they can tell you, if that wine is "a good wine" or that scotch "has aged long". It's like watching my 4yo telling his friend how important it is to order the stuffed animals THIS way and not any other. Adorable...at that age. No so much with older folks. You probably zone out when other people go into details of things you do not care about at all. It's so easy to make fun of them. Oh, look now they are talking about that steam engine train again an why they had to change the old bolts in 1876 to repair it...*yawn* Not sure when the mass illusion of "being cool" when you like to drink poison started. but humans were never a very intelligent species to begin with. We were just lucky, that it also kills stuff that kills us faster. Just ask yourself, if you really drink that stuff because you like the taste...or if you just told you long enough that you had to like the taste to be "in the club" with all the others. Do you need alcohol to be yourself? To be fun? Do you really think there is any importance to fermented grapes or distilled lignin? You know, that you only can impress those that follow the same delusion? When you tell me, you are a wine expert, to make me thing you are special, I mentally downgrade your social status to idiot. Now, if you drink alcohol to get drunk...no problem with that. Just do not harm others and do not pretend to be special and you can kill your brain and organs and long as you like. Yes, you will probably die in your 50s and your liver will look like a shriveled goat head, your heart will have more fat that muscle and your brain is gone...but, please have fun now. Who wants to live forever, right. Oh, yea´h, you only drink small amounts and those are even good for your health....yes, it's always nice to defend your drug use. But when feel you need to do that, it should ring a bell. "I am not dependent on alcohol! I can stop drinking whenever I want....I just do not want right now!". A dry week every quarter? Are you telling me, you drink alcohol on 330 days a year? And you do not see any problem with that? And your family does not see this as a problem? This is sad, man. I understood why drinking alcohol is stupid when I was 18. Now I try a new drink every...maybe 2-3 years and find out it still tastes like crap. Yeah, tried all those stuff that is "in" at some time. Gin and Whiskey and Rum and Wodka and whatever all tastes like alcohol with varying other stuff in it. But a spoonful of shit tastes not better, when you put sugar and cinnamon on top. Don't make a cult of your addiction. it's not a superpower to lie to yourself that you "like" this of that drink. And to brag about it is just pathetic. Yes, you can get drunk with it. Just do it and be done with it. Do not pretend it's a skill or something to aspire to.

You must be a barrel of fun at parties. BTW, alcohol is sugar. The fact that he can have dry spells indicates that he isn't addicted. One of the stories my father used to tell, was about a house party my parents were having when I was a toddler. He was serving some kind of alcohol and I was bugging him for what the big people were getting. He decided to "fix my wagon" by giving me a capful. To his surprise, I came back for more. Some people do genuinely like the taste of it. I never got completely drunk, just tipsy. I was always in control and always knew what I was doing. The only time I woke up without instantly knowing where I was, was when I woke up in ICU after an operation for a serious brain injury. Nowadays I can count the number of drinks I have in a year on one hand. BTW, cats will drink antifreeze because it tastes sweet. Antifreeze is synthetic alcohol and just one teaspoon will kill them.
