Mariano and I were lucky enough to be invited to a wedding in Yaylakonak, a quiet village in Turkey, and we found it an excellent opportunity to talk about the weddings of the Kurdish people.
"The guest is a godsend," goes an old Kurdish saying. They are very hospitable and do not miss any opportunity to show it. Thus, it is common for the Kurds to invite foreigners to participate in their celebrations and, in addition, guests, and especially travelers, receive preferential treatment.
For the Kurds, marriage is very important and they do not see well a person over 30 years old who is not married. This marriage was between Alevis (Muslims).
In a community spirit, the family and friends of the bride and groom collaborate with cooking, serving and all the necessary logistics. The food is very plentiful.
Men and women sit separately for much of the celebration and only interact during the dancing. They eat in shifts at very long tables, starting with the men and children. The bride and groom do not interact much with the guests. They sit in a separate altar and do not even think about the classic tour to take a picture with the guests at home table.
The dances (Halay) are communal and no one stands out. Its name "Halay" according to some interpretations means, in fact, "community". The lyrics were mostly in the Kurdish language. It is easy to learn, which helps not to exclude anyone. In general the person is taken on each side of the little finger. Participants at the ends usually hold colorful fabrics and some even get up for a dance solo....
