It’s great to see you’re all ok. Your children are growing and Puck seems to really enjoy the garden. I remember seeing her in your kitchen a couple of years back where she was helping you chop tomatoes you’d harvested. You are so fortunate to have such contented children. It was very touching to see a puck cut across the camera to give you a kiss. It’s the simple things in life that really matter. ❤️Angela ( South Wales)

July 3rd and my first red tomato. I think my lates red ever. The drought has slowed, we are thankful. Wishing you a wonderful harvest and summer days of joy. The grands and I did go to some swimming lessons, and they are sad to end them end. I am heading out for some jars; I suspect these tomatoes will all go red in a hurry. I will fill the dehydrator and jars too so as not to lose them. Tomato, basil, olive oil sandwich.

Watching this I'm remembering your garden from a few years ago... it's so much better this year. Every year has brought a better garden. The mulching and irrigation has vastly improved the soil... the only big thing missing seems to be a source of manure. Rabbits can provide a mild (not hot) manure that can go right into the planting beds without composting. Chicken manure needs to be semi-composted before use. My grandparents had an egg farm (& they supplied the local grocery store), so shoveling out the coop & run provided lots of good stuff for the garden, plus a source of fishing worms. Our farms were right on a river, so fishing & rowboats were a huge part of us kids growing up there. 🙂
@ourportuguesehomestead
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Working with the soil and learning more each year has definitely helped :) I agree we need more manure, but at the moment we do not want the extra responsibility that more animals bring. We'll get some other animals in the future though and rabbits are definitely an option

Will definitely watch this start to finish. Missed a video like this in a while. You show many aspects of this life very beautifully and I can fully see you improved and learned a lot with time. If you have wild boards beware, they can destroy all your crops, and fences. They even attack chickens. Keep an eye on them. Most people just shoot them and eat then or feed them to dogs. They are very tasty as well. I love fava beans. They're extremely productive as well. And very tasty in a traditional dish "favas com chouriço" or "favas com ovos escalfados". They're just great! And the husks you can feed to chickens too. Anyways thank you for the video!

Good that Louie keeps the wild boar at bay, I hope it keeps going like that, because they are really destructive for the crops. I never heard of them attacking chickens. Their meat is really delicious and most farmers have to hunt them or permit hunters to do it, to save their crops

Hi, I am following you guyes since the beginning, because I have the goal of living a simplier life amd as a portuguese I am very curious about seeing what foreigners see that we (portuguese) don't see in our country. But to be honest I still have a doubt: on average, really on average, what are your costs of living?
@ourportuguesehomestead
Жыл бұрын
I think quality of life is much better here than where we lived before :) Cost of living is also going up for us, groceries are getting so expensive... Hard to put an exact number on it because we have to start tracking things better. But for example we used to be able to get enough for the week for less than 100 and now we never get under that. We have the luxury that we don't pay rent or utilities, that makes our life possible here.
