The Buddha-statue making in the Giác Hải pagoda's area (alley 1017 Hồng Bàng street, Ward 12, District 6, HCMC) appeared later than pottery and weaving, but still has its own uniqueness. This village has existed and developed for more than 100 years.
Here, two great men made a name for the statue making village. They were Mai Văn Lai and Lê Văn Chánh. I learned that they were pupils of a master of Buddha-statue making. Later, they have opened two workshops of their own at the alley of Giác Hải pagoda.Their workshops, with their artistic skills and love, have made a name for the village. Their reputation spreaded to our neighboring countries, from China to Europe.
Out with the old, in with the new, the next generations inherited the tradition of their fathers. And the traditional village has lasted for more than 100 years.
Few places are as peaceful as this. With just a few steps into the alley, you can hear sounds of chiseling, rubbing and lively laughers mixed with the tapping sound from the pagoda. If you visit it even once, you will be able to find peace in your soul.
