There was a report of an incident in 1977 of a large bird trying to carry a child off in the Northern states I believe. His mother ran out to get him and seen it land in a nearby tree. It is covered on an episode of MonsterQuest and the man now grown talked about the terrifying memory.

@Mu*Shu TeeVee My question then, is why do you think these birds are bigger? Are the proportions different? Are the tree sizes different/proportional? The white underwing pattern and shape seems typical to me of a turkey vulture. I've had my own cryptid bird sightings, many times actually, but I always rationalize the evidence because, like the evidence in this video, nothing is out of the ordinary, our senses are just perplexed by the viscera of large, dark birds in aerial planes. I think maybe these large turkey vultures and sometimes juvenile bald eagles, and other large dark mystery birds invoke a feeling that makes us want to call them thunderbirds, but I think the thunderbirds of old may have been something different.

I grew up in Southern Illinois in the 70's. My family collectively owned a large wooded area. One day I was in the woods walking around and suddenly noticed how quiet it was, then a huge dark shape went right over the tops of the trees, it was heading to where I knew a clearing was so I went as fast as I could to see what it was. As I came up to the clearing a massive shadow crossed the ground, but as I came out and looked up whatever it was, was gone. My grandmother lived almost right beside where I was so went and told her what I had seen. She told me it was a Thunderbird and refused to let me walk home through the woods and drove me home. I was under strict orders from her to stay out of the woods for the next few days, I never experienced it again.

For people who think these are not turkey vultures--how tall do you think those trees are? 100ft? 200ft? 500ft? The bird in front of the tree easily spans it's wings ten times in front of what I'm guessing is about a 50ft tree because it is a 5ft wingspan turkey vulture. Chief AJ makes no claim otherwise either. He just presents his footage and calls them your "thunderbirds."
@Mean_Jean

As cool as it would be for thunderbirds to be real, and perhaps they are, it seems the only way people are able to sustain their belief in them, along with other such creatures like bigfoot, is for obvious explanations to be casually dismissed. "No I've seen X and it wasn't that" is the refrain you hear all the time for such things. When thunderbird sightings were reported in the St. Louis area, in 1948, all the witness accounts and sketches in the newspaper suggest that it was a sailplane, at a time when most people had never seen a glider before. But one army guy said it wasn't a glider, and even though he never said he worked with gliders in the army, people take that as proof that it wasn't one. If you showed this video to people without telling them it was supposedly a thunderbird or a condor, they'd assume these were turkey vultures or black vultures. No one would be claiming they could tell these birds were "at least three times the size of a turkey vulture" if the video didn't call them thunderbirds.
@dannzalbjorklund
3 жыл бұрын
@@RepublicofE I'd like to add, that as a bird watcher myself, these look distinctly turkey vulture. Black vultures fly differently, have a different wing shape, and different white pattern on the bottom of their wings. Every time I've seen this video, I always thought the photographer was being tongue-in-cheek when he calls the "thunderbirds." Or maybe turkey vultures are thunderbirds?
@RepublicofE
3 жыл бұрын
@@dannzalbjorklund The question I always ask for cryptids is "what would it take for it to be real?" I actually find thunderbirds to be somewhat more plausible than something like bigfoot, because besides the crazy claims of giant birds snatching children, all it would take for it to be real is that there's a big bird we don't know about, and and the sky is a very big place especially over the ocean. Plus we know there were flying birds of such a size in the past. With bigfoot you have to be open to all sorts of contrivances for how it's able to hide from us. There are claims out there that could not be anything but an unknown giant bird species if the people making the claims are telling the truth. But the fact that a video like this could convince so many people, when these are so obviously turkey vultures, makes it clear that some people just need to see more birds/

They don’t, the underside of an Andean condor’s wings is basically all black. They have white markings on the upper wings and a distinct white ruff (collar), so it’d be pretty obvious if these were Andean condors. A lot of people are saying that these are Turkey Vultures, and I can agree. I live in South America, and Turkey Vultures live here all year along. These are very similar, in shape and coloring, specially the secondary gray/white coloring in the back of the wings, but there's something odd about the size these ones have. They just seem too big, way bigger than the biggest Turkey Vultures that I've seen, that have a wingspan of not more than 2 meters long. These ones seem to rival the Old World vultures in size, or even the Condor species. Maybe they're an undiscovered species of vulture related to the turkeys, who knows...

Could be an eagle with gigantism and that's why we don't see many of these because when it happens then they die early in their life span.

There's no way to tell how large this bird is, because there's absolutely nothing in the film to scale it. It can be as large as you WISH it to be, but that isn't confirmation of anything.

Is Chief AJ the same person as the channel name John Huffer? “Texas” John Huffer was the person who filmed the large bird and was on the wcia news broadcast in 1977 discussing it. Just trying to figure out if that Texas John is Chief AJ or where Texas John is now.

Y'all, this is a Turkey Vulture. they're probably just females, which are 30% larger than males. You can tell because of the thin, non-feathered head, dark body, and grayish wing and tail feathers. The third clip (the one with the very long wings) is of a male Northern Harrier or a juvenile Bald Eagle

Agreed, they’re TuVus, but there aren’t actually any notable size differences between sexes in this species, so these could be either males or females.

TheCaLiKid could be. That's what I suspect as well. Doesn't necessarily have to be a "Thunderbird"

Actually condors aren't found in that part of the country they found even though slightly possible they could be there high chance it's not a condor it's not it's habitat and it's 3-4 times the size of a turkey vulture some say it is a turkey vulture some say it's not. It's not a black vulture cause they aren't found in that part of illinois

The last birds wing span is anywhere from 13-15 feel long no way that’s an eagle or vulture this clip is just downright unexplainable. It’s huge the wings are larger than any bird I’ve ever seen
@BigZsethh

@@RandyKrow This is true but I’ve observed birds my entire life and have studied them. I’ve been able to reference the wingspan of birds in flight to the the length of each wing. the thicker and shorter the wings indicates that the wingspan isn’t that long and also the duration of each flap and how they adjust back to gliding after flapping. I can identify species based of the way they flap their wings. These may not be thunder birds but they are beyond the average wingspan of any vulture I’ve ever seen or studied. Just look at how far the wings extend from the actual body of the bird and that tells you everything you need to know whether there’s a point of reference or not.

if the video isnt slowed down then this is definitely an odd sighting.. hard to say these days it’s annoying how people try to make things out be something they’re not. kzitem.info/news/bejne/u55n2I6phYOqlZg this video here shows a drone flying up high and fairly close to turkey vultures, they definitely seem smaller than this bird. could just be an over sized buzzard though. hard to say. would be sweet if it wasn’t a buzzard tho lol.
