About Maria Hernandez and why there is a park named in her honor: "The park was named after Maria Hernandez, who lived in Bushwick and fought against drug dealers in the neighborhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1953 and educated at public schools in the borough, she went to New York University for accounting. Hernandez and her husband tried to evict drug dealers from her neighborhood of Bushwick. They tried to stop them by rallying support for their efforts and educating her neighbors about the need to evict them. She organized block parties and other community gatherings. On August 8, 1989, Maria was fatally shot five times through her window in her apartment on Starr Street, later dying of her wounds. Due to her brave and committed role in the community, the park was renamed in her honor."-- As for the apartment at $3300/month? I LIKED IT! It's a great price and value for what you get, plus it's new construction. I thought the wood flooring in the bathrooms was interesting. I can't recall the last time I've seen that. For me, the deciding factor would be the quality of life in the neighborhood.

@@MamaCarola1 That I was not a fan of. It's hard enough to keep wooden cabinets grease free along with the other dirt. Why add in an additional headache? Then it's an issue of flammability for me. That is probably the first thing and only thing that I would request the Landlord to change out.

If you're happy with the neighborhood, and if you don't mind the stairs (I think this is third floor), and if they really do install laundry machines, this would be easier to share than some others we've seen. The bedrooms aren't equal and you have to add in heat and hot water, but it's all shiny clean and new, so I think it will rent quickly.

The neighborhood looks WONDERFUL to those of us who grew up in Brooklyn and have "evolved" to Veganism - like Brooklyn grew up with us. Lots of neighborhood shops, classic Brooklyn, with a modern take. A lot of people would be delighted with just that atmosphere. Building is gorgeous. Didn't see an elevator. The apartment is gorgeous. I would most definitely live there. The price is excellent for a brand new 2-bdrm apt. Kitchen is safe. Fridge is a great size. Bathrooms are beautiful. There's some room around the toilet. Made for humans. Walk in closet really does look like another small room. This apartment is a winner. If I were to move back to Brooklyn, I'd be delighted to find a place like that.

The fixtures and finishes are nice. But it's on the small side for $3300/month. Also, it's not a true 2-bedroom apartment. By code, a space that is to be considered as a bedroom must have a closet. The room that's right off the living space doesn't have a closet. Apart from that, the fixtures and finishes are really nice.

No, you need to earn 40x the rent if you have a good credit score. When you buy in a coop, you need to have at least 20 percent down and then generally one to two years of maintenance and mortgage payments in your bank account.

The number of bathrooms is overrated for families. We had 2 and a half baths at our previous house and never used the second tub for the 8 years we lived there as it was easier to bathe small children in the master because of the configuration and we put sliding glass doors on it so that they could splash without having to mop up the floors. In our current house with 2.5 bathrooms we lived there until my son was a teenager who wanted to know why he had to shower in the master bath as we had a separate stall and the other bathroom had a combo tub/shower. I told him that as long as he was willing to clean it, then he could use it, which he did. The half bath was reserved for guests as boys of all ages never aim well and I wasn’t going to deal with that for all 3 commodes so was always presentable if someone came over. People who own homes have to deal with plumbing problems and water leaks so the trouble with hoses, seals, etc. is exponential. When one supply hose leaks, then you end up changing out 6 as the others will shortly fail.

How do the retail workers, the service industry people live in New York when rents for an apartment that is smaller than mine are 3 to 4 times the price? My apartment in New York would be $4000 a month and I pay $950.for a two bed one bath with almost 1100 square feet.

They don't. Either they live far, far, out (then you have transportation costs), or live on top of each (roommates) in small apartments where the rent is split, or they live at home and/or other family. It's a reason that retail workers have been protesting for increases in the minimum wage to hopefully a livable wage.
