Hello everyone. I'm an English speaking American Ecuadorian. I've lived in California a long time. I'm a well adjusted American citizen. Lately, I've been watching videos made by Americans living in Ecuador and I find them quite interesting, for they afford me a different perspective and they make me evaluate the possibility of returning to Ecuador permanently. In my case, is family and friends that motivate me to return. But once I've watched the videos, I realize that foreigners appreciate what Ecuadorian take for granted. Thank for the analysis of why Ecuador is best in the world.

The same thing happens to you as to other Ecuadorians, that when they leave Ecuador they realize how valuable Ecuador is and its human wealth, that in other countries life is not as beautiful as movies or travel agencies paint us, Ecuador has defects but more are its virtues, dream that Ecuador is a better country this new year

As I've said before, Ecuador is a beautiful Country. My response was based on certain people making the statement one could live on $400-$500 per month. It's just not happening if you're an American. We've become accustomed to a certain standard of living that simply isn't that cheap to attain, whether it be in Ecuador or simply, just about anywhere else in the world.
@proyectonuevo7487

@@proyectonuevo7487 I'm in agreement. It's just there are videos out promoting these very inexpensive lifestyles in numerous Countries that simply isn't true. And sadly, there are people out there stupid enough to believe them. For $1500/month, you could live better in Ecuador than the US, for sure. But if you want to really enjoy the Country, stop wasting time spending it with ex-pats sitting around drinking, learn the language and get to know the Ecuadorians.

Thank you for reconfirming the goodness of living in Ecuador! I was born in Ecuador but grew up in NY since I was 9 yrs old, I feel my roots are here in NY, I am greatfull for all we have here, basic things that everyone else takes for granted. I have a hard time time trying to think about giving it up. But, always do think about Ecuador, when I was a child and the time I was there growing up, even though we were of meager beginnings, times as a child, came home from school, changed, ran outside to play always barefoot for example, I do always remember times there and how simple things were. My family migrated here, worked hard, saved, sacrificed so much, built two homes there, one in Guayaquil and one In Salinas. Always think about retiring there, like 6 months there, 6 months here. I hope to make the beginnings of that jump in the not too far future.

Talking about Vietnam, cold in Hanoi and hot in Saigon, you should have checked out Da Nang, basically right in the middle between them! Beautiful city, beautiful beaches, some rated the best beaches in the world! I spent 2 years in Da Nang back in the late 1960's. Can say yes, it does get hot there, but today it is one of the most highly rated retirement destinations for "gringos"! Plus, today, Vietnamese love Americans, cost of living is very cheap, maybe you need to update your posts and make a run to Da Nang! :)

Thank you my friend for your fair assessment of several countries. i have done a bit of traveling myself and agree with all of it. You did not mention the coast of Colombia, but what I was afraid of was the safety issue which you did mention. It probably applies to Santa Marta and Cartagena as well. I am of Mexican descent and would not live there (so I agree with your assessment of Mexico. Not safe. I may still try and visit Santa Marta/Cartagena because I hear it is much better safety wise than Mexico. I am not sure. So far, I have also found Ecuador to be at the top of my list. Although I though Costa Rica was much prettier but cost of living is going up there. You may have talked me out of going to Panama since you say the cost of living is high and there are many ex-pats. I retire in two years so have some time to decide. I hated Belize. Don't know what the fuss is about. There are two strips of land to live on that everyone goes to. Everything is imported and nothing is grown there. But ENGLISH is spoken. I suspect that's what all the fuss is about. What a waste. Learn some spanish!

Just remember, If you need to work locally as an employee to support yourself, Ecuador is not a good place to earn a “good salary by first world standards” . (nor is any other Latam country for that matter). I would be very leery of depending on the local Ecuadorian economy as my *only* means of subsistence. Even experienced professional employee salaries are shockingly low here compared to the US or Europe. However, If you plan to have your own local business enterprise here then it might be a different matter, but of course that always implies a good amount of business start-up risk. But in general, if your business is successful, the enterprise ROI can be pretty short Alternatively, you can either work online for a foreign ( US or European) company,… or better still… come here already with sufficient steady retirement pension or rental /investment income of some sort, so you are not entirely dependent on the job market here.

I've spent time in Ecuador and lots of time in Cuenca. If you think you're going to live there on $400/month as some profess, then you're extremely stupid and gullible. If you plan on living anywhere near how you live in the US, it's going to take at least $1500/month. Anyone telling you otherwise is trying to paint a pretty picture. Most of the ex-pats I met in Cuenca were people (including a doctor) who financially failed in the US, bought into this "cheap lifestyle" in Ecuador, moved and later regretted it but were at that point not in a financial position to move back. And I went to various gringo nights at several American owned restaurants and met a lot of people therefore speak from personal experience. Additional, walking around is miserable. Cars are diesel with no pollution controls therefore be ready to breathe in black smoke when walking on the sidewalks. Most Americans I met were bored and drank to while their time away. Cars are very expensive. Health care is reasonable....think carefully and visit. That's what I did after I heard all these positive videos realizing it wasn't what I had heard.

@@mujinhanfearlessmu9072 Huh....Ecuador uses the US dollar as their own currency. And, they do love Americans visiting, leaving their US Dollars behind in hopes they can at one point increase their standard of living so they too can upgrade to a huge apartment big enough to house 3 generations primarily caused from having not enough US Dollars to live separately. I'm not saying Ecuador is a bad place to go. It's not. The Country is pretty but the Gringo Tax is everywhere and it does get old knowing you're nothing more than a large piggy bank to a lot of the locals.

@@mujinhanfearlessmu9072 Huh....maybe that's the way you see it but just maybe....they have gotten tired of multi generational living due to financial reasons and once achieving new found financial freedom, have the ability to finally live on their own. You write as if you represent the masses. I would venture if polled, most people would rather not live multi-generational. If that's your gig, great but I think most want to live independently. Eventually, you grow up, find someone you love and in some cases, have children. Do you really want your parents, in-laws or grand-parents around.....I think not. As for the materialistic comment, I find people taking this stance simply an attempt to justify their lifestyle usually based on financial constraints. I will say owning stuff doesn't make you happier, that happiness is intrinsic. Bottom line, you need a more open mind rather than pushing this mantra as if you speak for the masses.

@@celestecarrera2963 It's simply not the paradise people paint it out to be. You need to clearly understand if you want a lifestyle somewhat like the US, it's not going to come at a price under $1000 unless you want to live like some of the middle to lower class locals. Walking around sounds cutsie on other videos but most cars are diesel and pollution controls on cars are lacking. You'll be breathing diesel smoke. I've traveled the world and have found in looking at various youtube channels the picture they paint doesn't truly reflect reality. If I was looking to live somewhere else, I would live in Porto, Portugal. Beautiful country, beautiful, friendly people and it's not that much more than Ecuador.

Quite an impressive list of places you've been ! -- Ecuador sounds special enough for many people. I've been listening to numerous videos about it and 'most' seem to make it sound far more affordable than the US. I get the impression from you as not so much ? Long term for a retired person over 65 supposedly gets many discounts for buses air fare movies - and - Mucho respect I've heard said ? Visa fees are reasonable too and income requirements are not bad. = Overall a fairly good long term choice - if - you can adapt and adjust to the differences than you might not be used to ? Everyone is different. The economics are significant enough for many even though some countries may be cheaper. I saw Siem Reap Cambodia as very cheap - less than the capital. But hot & humid as hell ! Georgia has been overwhelmed by Russians since your recording this from the war with Ukraine and costs have really gone up ! Ecuador remains quite a good choice.

I have lived in Thailand for several years. Yes the visa/residency situation is annoying but doable but I like that tourism is big here or was. It brings a cosmopolitan vibe to the country and the promotion of speaking English. Thai is a difficult language. I have been looking into Ecuador and its many pluses. However there are two main deal killers for Ecuador: 1. No crypto exchanges tied to the banking system. 2. No Asian women(duh). Minor issues: Not really tropical and chronically cloudy, beaches not so good, safety is an issue at times. Thailand is very safe and theft almost nonexistent despite what you see in the news. Pollution of air, water and food is a problem in Thailand as it is in all of Asia because of a lack of regulation and an enormous population. However, if you are going to raise children, don't think about any of this. Stay in the USA.

Justice can be a dealbreaker in Ecuador as well. We all know that people end up in prisons after being involved in a traffic accident. And when the other party pays the corrupt police officers, it will be an extended stay. Other possible dealbreakers of Ecuador: - no emergency healthcare system - no postal service - corruption - political instability - high crime rate - no jobs - poverty in your face - schools are expensive - cheating/lies - 5% money exit tax For me, these are no dealbreakers, but for other people these are. If you live in Medellin, you can visit many towns around the city. But yes, in that case a car is recommended. Colombia has areas that one should avoid because of drug cartels but Ecuador also has such areas.

Sorry (again maybe), but you are comparing apples with carrots...:) I am fully Ecuadorian. I think comparing Peru, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Mexico Panama etc to Ecuador would be the gig. But mostly , and I ve watched some expats channels, is to compare with your USA way of living. There are easy points to say if you will be liking Ecuador which I don't see on this channels. You seem to know a bit of Ecuador geography but seems like you just hop from city to city spending short time and then you give your subjective view. Is not completely wrong but in certain subjects on Ecuador you specifically climate on coast where I live you are way off and on Loja . Comparing Asia or middle east to Ecuador is just crazy... Anybody coming or trying to come live here or any other Latin American country in my view should go get a taste of culture and weather but mostly culture of latinoamerica first...then get info on Ecuador but mainly come to Ecuador and try it for few months...besides culture in Ecuador varies a lot from regions as weather and ecosystems ...in fact that's the reason for Ecuador to have multi diverse species... Best luck to anybody coming we will welcome you if you are not trying to impose your culture to us..
