Why I love the internet - I'm 35, I just recently finished therapy with a psychologist and started living my life over again, but I'm still afraid that I've already missed everything in this life. That I won't have time to experience anything, I won't have time to be anywhere. And then I came across your channel. Where you say with full confidence that at 50 you can easily move to the country you have long dreamed of, and live a quiet and peaceful life, which you have long dreamed of, to do your own thing, and just live.... Thank you so much for the inspiration!

Being the same age as Chani, my advice is to set achievable goals for each 5 year block. They can be simple or complex. Life will zip past if you let it. Goal setting and doing new things can alter your perception of time. Enjoy right now you can’t change the past, and try and be a better version of the person you were yesterday. 😊👍

Being mindful of the neighbors, creating a space that although small, provides a sense of relaxation for your well-being. Taking practical steps to accommodate any negatives concerning the weather (instead of just complaining about it), all makes for a delightful personality with a lot of practicality. I'm pretty impressed.

I am sure you feel that your house in Japan is cramped beyond comparison with Australia. In spite of such inconvenience, you have managed to spend your days in a spiritually rich way, which is very impressive. From now until the middle of July, the humid and rainy season begins. Please take your time to enjoy a cup of tea and enjoy the elegance of the rain falling on the leaves of the trees and the plants on your balcony.

Hi Chani, just one small tip: when you bring home a plant in a pot, as you plant it in the garden it's wise to tease out the roots from the way they were in the pot. Half fill the hole with water and then add soil, tamping down all around. This way the roots will start reaching out into the surrounding soil for immediate nutrients and the plant will be off to a great start. I have followed you from the beginning with great admiration for all of your efforts. Each week I eagerly look forward to your next video which I always find rewarding to watch.

You have become Japanese, due to the fact that you have managed to set up a vegetables & flowers garden together with a 'beer garden & Barbecue table' to boot, within a small, confined space at the back of the house! Also, you spoke about traveling/camping light with compact stove, cooking wares & utensils, etc. all designed to fit inside a small Kei camping van, still with enough room for a table and (foldable) bed. I remember lugging/pushing 2 rollable luggage pieces and sweating profusely especially at train stations in my first Japan trip in 07/1998; my Japanese friends only had a small carryon along with a tiny laptop (about the size of today's 10-in tablet) to communicate with their grad students.

If you want something other than the fake grass that is a bit nicer to sit/walk on and is extremely low maintenance, look into Moss or Clover lawns. There's a lot of low maintenance lawns that are pet friendly. In regards to camping, get yourself one of those plastic crates with a lid and use it to store kitchen ware, cookware, cutlery, tea towels and wash cloths/sponges. You can use the tub as a sink when you're done cooking. We also used to use an old gumption tub (one with a screw lid) to store our little bottle of dish soap and the steel wool. Daiso generally have a pretty good selection of travel sized bottles and getting some of these for oil, soap, shampoo, conditioner etc, is a really good idea. Also, if you can find a decent priced one, an AC converter for the car goes such a long way. You can use your car (while its running) to blow up an air mattress instead of using a foot pump, if you have one. Although you mentioned the car comes with a bed kit so you might be able to get away with just a futon or thick blanket (like a doona). There's also torches that you can recharge by winding a hand crank. Usually the crank tucks into the body of the light when not in use and you can pop it out and wind it up when you need to. They generally come with a hook so you can hang it up easily, and we didn't need to wind ours often. I'm loving these videos! がんばってをください!! (ミリーはとてもかわいいです 💚)

If you want something easy for your garden, I recommend: Chard (rainbow), Kale (so many kinds) or Collards. They can be eaten fresh or cooked and they will continue to produce all summer into winter if you just pick the big leaves as they mature. They don't take up a lot of space either.

I’m so happy you’re settling into your new life; it’s a big step to start a new life. I can relate to your situation as I’m living a new life. I love your garden, nice looking tomatoes. I would love to plant tomatoes but I have so many wild animals who visit my garden nightly. I live in a town that is part of the Greater Toronto area but I have skunks, raccoons, many squirrels. I would need to wrap plants in chicken wire to protect them and I hate to admit it but I don’t feel like taking on that much work at the moment….hahaha!

Of all the camping gear I ever used my klamboe, a mosquito net, was the best investment ever. I even had one I could zip to the outdoor space of my van. My cats loved laying on their cooling mats inside it, as it never occurred to me cats can be stung too. Does Millie need a cooling mat? Coffee, tea maker, something to drink from and carry water in too. Electricity? Do you need an extension cord? Is Millie allowed inside restaurants? Some refused my fluffy boys. Oh my goodness, kimchi lotus root 😋

Perfect little garden there and I love the sail shade. Going to have to look into that for myself. A recommendation for your garden eggplant. I have some too and found the leaves are edible, just cook them as you would any green leafy vege. I put it in soups, including miso, stews and casseroles where they are barely noticed. Helpful if one has kids that are suss about veggies.

Your little garden space is really taking shape now. I think you're very restrained if you can come out of a hyaku-enya with only a ¥1,000 deficit! 😮 Your BBQ Wagyu smells probably drove your neighbours mad with jealousy! Oishi-sō. 😋 I love mugi-cha on a hot day but it's not easy to get locally here in Australia so I make genmai-cha and chill it. Both my cats like cat grass but only one has the gene that attracts cats to catnip. We grow nepeta (catmint) which has attractive soft grey green serrated edge foliage and small pretty bracts of lavender flowers in summer. He's a 100% indoor cat so we pick him a few sprigs and he gobbles them up like crack then rolls around all stoned... 😂😂😂

Lucky you! Everything looks wonderful! Congratulations on everything you've accomplished! As for your garden, I'd recommend trying to source some coca coir mulch, the chunky stuff. Mulch around your plants and top dress your potted plants with it. They'll look great and it really helps retain soil moisture during your hot season. Also, it keeps soil from splashing on your veggies during watering, so your veggies are cleaner. That's a huge deal for leafy greens. We're having a nasty hot spell (100F) here in Pennsylvania, USA and I've found my coir mulched raised beds and grow bags can go two to three days between waterings. In addition, the coir is sustainable and pH neutral, so you can use it with any plant and not alter the growing conditions. It really is the finishing touch.

We do a lot here in Oz out of a Jimny, and my partner buys gear from Japan because it's so much better - she's Japanese, so a bit of bias, but I can honestly say it really is better. Look at Soto single burner stove (SOTO ST-340), very compact, Snowpeak saucepan/frypan set, snowpeak mug etc

My son and myself are growing chillis, potatoes, garlic, cucumbers, strawberries, pumpkins and corn. I tried growing Brussel sprouts, but for some reason never took ( we started it from seeds ). Looking forward to harvest time, since nothing tastes better than your own veggies and fruits! Btw, liked your home improvements, especially for the shading issue! As for the heat, I feel for you! Visited Tokyo back in 2018, and omg! Thank heavens for vending machines on every street corner! I must’ve had umpteen iced green teas and water bottles! Visited quite a few coffee shops and regular shops to escape the heat!

Hi Chani . Really enjoying your relaxing content - and gardening on a budget ! I only have a small area and don’t get enough sun for veggies in the ground - but do get enough for herbs for cooking ( basil , mint, thyme , rosemary, parsley and chives ) and am growing lemons in big pots . First main harvest this year - it has taken 8 years and I’m so excited to have home grown lemons ! It does give you much satisfaction growing your own food . Hint for basil , I cut them when they look a bit leggy and pinch off the flowers when they come . Looking forward to seeing your camping videos!

I envy your garden so much XD I have been trying to grow some vegetables on my balcony but been pretty unsuccessful at that :p And having space to make furniture and to varnish ... I really hope I can get a house in the near future ^^"

Some heat proof gloves for holding and picking up your non insulated tins from your burner might be good if not already bought.

Nice beer garden! We used to sit out on our balcony in Tokyo with a cassette conro and some beef like you are doing, so it takes me back. You have a nicer area than a balcony in Tokyo. I hope you enjoy it. I'm guessing you'll use it more in autumn than summer. All the beer companies have special aki beers come out in autumn and I think that's no coincidence.

I have a large garden and just recently extended the veggie growing area. Propagated the soil and getting ready to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, egg plants and others. Just waiting for rainy season to finish.

9:15 Haha I have the exact feeling when walking into a Diaso or Kmart here in Australia. So much much stuff to buy! Good philosophy: Buy slowly, try out hiking/ your hobby and see what you need.
