I lived in Springfield as a college student in the 1980s. I live in St. Louis now. Crime was not a problem then. In fact it was for the most part very low, but there was a bad element and I remember people wanted to avoid certain areas at night. It's a great place for families but I guess it wouldn't be to the liking of certain types of people. My parents had a ranch about 100 miles to the east and they drove into Springfield every couple months for essential services they couldn't find out in the rural areas of the Ozarks. My mom fell ill and had to spend a while at Mercy Hospital---but she had an excellent experience there, under the circumstances. It is a top-notch hospital.

The crime hasn't been one of my favorite elements here, although there are places like that in any city that you go to! I think just being smart about where you go and during certain times of the day should keep you safe. Just being aware of your surroundings everywhere you go. 😄

I moved to Springfield Missouri to go to college in 1987 it was a horrible experience the people are not friendly in Springfield. I was glad to move back to New York and yes the weather is terrible in Springfield. You are right that you need a car to get around it’s very spread out. It was a lonely time I never got established out there I was glad to move back home I met my wonderful wife and I am glad to be back in my hometown upstate New York. From a former resident - Pros - not a lot of "diversity", relatively conservative values, mild winters (most of the time), low cost of living. Cons - terribly low wages. To make more than 12 bucks an hour you have to be selling meth. Career advancement is based on the buddy system and as previously mentioned your glass ceiling is 12 bucks and hour in any case (sometimes medical people make a little more). "The SW Missouri Curse" - if you do happen to come into some money through say, winning the lottery or some random sweepstakes, inheritance, etc... someone has already figured out a way to get it. Tax refund in your favor - then all 4 wheel bearings go out on your truck (what's the chance of that happening?) 2600 bucks total bill. Not much to do - no skiing or sledding in the winter (not enough snow and the hills aren't big enough to make a decent ski run), summer is blistering hot and generally you choose to stay indoors in the air-conditioning. Winter is ugly with frozen mud as the norm. Generally long spells of drought which robs you of the normally pretty fall foliage. Rag weed - if you have any inkling towards being allergic you life will be a miserable hell there. Traffic lights - it's much easier and quicker to drive across the state of Maine than to drive across Springfield at any hour. The guy who was originally hired to program the stoplight computer wanted more than 8 bucks and hour so they had a pet monkey on crack do it.

Branson and lake of the Ozarks are close.Quick commutes across town. Summers are hot and humid. Winters are generally mild here, not much snow. Housing costs are lower than the national average. Low property taxes. Friendly non-aggressive society. Many colleges. Downside is wages are lower here but costs of living is low. Gun friendy city. Gas stations on every corner. A conservative majority reside here. I moved here from communist Illannoy and have never looked back. Major wilderness areas with camping and hiking within a 2 hour drive. I will happily die here.

I have lived in SGF since 2012, Nixa before that and San Diego, CA (moved here due to family) before that..grew up in MN. This is definitely not the ideal city for me for a bunch of reasons, which I will not fully go into! But you definitely did a good job of "selling it" while being honest. You definitely understand this city;) I would add the art's scene as a pro. We have a good amount of theatre, visual art, and other forms of art here. A couple of my cons to add...lack of diversity...I don't like living in a 90%+ white city, plus the 25.7% poverty rate is very high and causes issues. Drug problems as well, especially meth. And the city itself visually is not attractive, to me it is ugly here. You can find pockets of nice, but overall, I find it boring visually. Springfield most definitely has its pros and cons and I know people who like/love it here. But me? I will be moving on as soon as reasonably possible. I will retain fond memories of some aspects, and say good riddance to the rest. Thanks for your honesty on Springfield!

Lived there for about 5 to 6 months, wasn't for me. Small town not very diverse, as a person of color I never really paid much mind to all that, but when everyone you meet is white it does get a little weird after a while. One best buy, one target, also one barnes and noble. I come from a city and while I don't like going out much, not having many of my favorite places around was a bummer. Commuting was weird. Taking the highway doesn't make a lot of sense unless you're going out of town or to the airport. It never felt like I had to drive very far to get anywhere but it took forever. Some days I spent almost an hour trying to get food. Infrastructure I guess hasn't kept up with a growing population. HEALTHCARE...DO NOT GET SICK HERE. I had a bad case of dandruff/eczema and it was impossible trying to get someone to see me that wasn't a walk in clinic. Some will say its like that every where now...no it is not. Verandas is where I rented...really nice. The people were nice overall, probably the nicest people I've met...like ever...even at the Walmarts. Definitely recommend going to the aquarium. I live in Overland Park now and I'm much happier here. I guess I'm just a city person.

Hey there! So one of the people who work here moved here for college (the christian college called Evangel), and since then she has stayed here and made it her home! There are lots of churches and groups inside even colleges like MSU, OTC, and Drury if you are looking. We recommend it! ❤️ Honestly, we can't imagine living anywhere else.

I am a truck driver and I work for a company out of Cabool. I am really considering moving to Springfield. Housing sure has gone up. I am hoping to find a 3 bedroom, 2 full bath home in a good area. A two car garage as well. Hail!!! We are elderly so I hope to find one that doesn't need repairs in the near future. Newer HVAC, roof etc. I have a cash budget between $165,000 to $175,000. Is that still possible or do you see housing prices dropping soon?

@wiserlivingrealty
3 жыл бұрын
I would say all of Springfield is less prone because Springfield is on a plateau. West of Springfield about 10 miles is more proned to tornados because it’s flatter, but south of Springfield where the hills start is less tornadoes. And east of Springfield is even less likely 😊 Hope this helps!

Visiting for the holidays, I see little to no police presence in this town. Dec 2022 8 motorcycles riding down suicide lane on Sunshine. One was doing wheelies the whole way - half of them had no lights on at dark. 2 days in a row, cars blowing through red lights on very busy streets. Most cities have easy freeway access to get you quickly to the quadrants of town and suburbs. Springfield has urban sprawl, with ALL the traffic concentrated on a few main arteries. Is Springfield a town of idiots or what?
@timrodrick8438
Жыл бұрын
I think police presence is ok. Just ok. The problem is, there are no consequences. Threat to do bodily harm - the police say eh. Drugs/theft - routine. Hit and run - the police say accidents happen.

It's 87% white, but the diversity from there is surprising: Every country in Europe is represented here. Australians seem to like it here. There is a substantial population of Afrikaaners. Balkans abound. 62.5% of people who live here were NOT born here. So any accent fits in. 2 things: learn the difference between hill people and hillbillies. The other is, if you want to avoid most of the violent crime, stay out of the trailer parks.
