I work in a hospital here in Sweden and we never aks the patient what bloodtype they are we always check blodtype with a so called BAS-test that covers ABO-system and some other stuff. and its only valid for 5 days after that we will take that test again. Well, Snus has actually existed in the US for about a decade or so now. Swedish Match fought hard to get into the US market, and they did. So Swedish snus is now sold in the US. However, I think that during the time they tried to get in to the market, Phillip Morris (or whomever makes Camel cigarettes) made a snus of their own, in the format of Swedish snus. There is a major difference though, where the American made version is highly carcinogenic as it is not pasteurized and has a ton of additives. There's even a 60 minutes episode about it.

Comparisons of tax levels between the USA and Scandinavia are not entirely easy to perform. A lot depends on which US state you live in, marital status, number of children and so on. The taxes for ordinary, working people in the USA are not at all lower than the taxes for ordinary, working people in Sweden. However, the Swedes get more for their money. However, you will not be "punished" if you become rich in the United States. The opportunities to avoid tax are significantly greater in the US if you are rich, Attitudes towards taxes are completely different - in Sweden it is not accepted to evade taxes.
@OscarSommerbo
5 ай бұрын
Swedish "rich" people do their fair share of tax avoidance. Mostly fiddling with companies "owning" their wealth, or change residency to various tax havens. And you have to get very rich before you get "punished" and/or work a job paying insanely high monthly wages. The tax loopholes are not as numerous or obvious as in the states, but they do exist.

For the vacation, here we have payed vacation for 4-6 weeks (depends on extra benefits negotiated by the union for different sectors.) It increases with age aswell, starting at 25 days by law, when you reach 40 you get 31 days. I understand that in the US you have a lot less, if any payed vacation at all, unless it's a benefit - not by law. So from that perspective i dont see how the US citizen are free to travel whenever they want? We can save days and take them off at different times of the year, it also somewhat based on sector of work, where some have their high season in summer, and then they dont have vacation in summer, except maybe for a week or two. We can also save up to 2 weeks and allocate them for a future year when we might need more days off. On top of this we also have payed and unpayed parental leave up up to certain age, i believe to 14 years old. Aswell as "unpayed leave" that can be negotiated with your employeer, but you could take a year off or more off without pay, and then come back to your old work. It is not uncommon that families combine all these options to make extra long holidays or travel the world, testing moving abroad, major renovations done yourself etc.
@melnerud
5 ай бұрын
The increase in the amount of days for paid vacation when you get older only applies to jobs in goverment or public areas (statlig och kommunal verksamhet) for all other work for example in privately owned companies or large enterprises it is most common with 25 days of paid vacation (whereas you whould take at least 4 weeks consequently, most common during summer) sometimes you can have 30 days of paid vacation as well as a slightly higher monthly salary if you make an agreement to not take extra benefit for overtime work. When you work at an industry with 24h production 7 days a week all year round, you have to plan your summer vacation with your coworkers, so that some people always will be on site (day time jobs). Not everyone can have the summer vacation at the same time, because some people need to work when others are away. Some year you might have 4 weeks in June, another year 4 weeks in July, and yet another year 4 weeks in August.

5:10 What do you mean by "There is a limited amount of toys you can have here"? If you mean the stores have a smaller variety of toys, compared to the US, you might be right, but you make it sound like there is a limit to how many toys one can own. And that is not right at all.

No, that argument isn't valid when you consider Germany with its population of 84 million people. They have the same level of welfare and in some cases even better. They have longer paid vacation and they also have free dental care (Which we don't have in Sweden). Similar welfare states in Britain and France too, which are not small countries.

Let me share a story that were true 1980, when i went to schoole, and it still is.... ... Some students complaid about head-ace, cold and other health problems. An investigation came to the conclution, that there were mold in the ventilation system causing serious health risks, to each and every-one. But the principal of the school couldn't do nothing.... Then there were a BRAVE teacher that went to the union representative for work safety. The union, threatend to close the schoole, if the problem was not "TAKEN CARE OF" The principal now had two options, sack the teacher, or renovate the ventilation. Luckilly, he went for the latter..... Imagen now...the teacher beeing payed/h, getting sacked ,and the student/child parents been i investigated and prosecuted... Holy moly... I guess shit can happen....even in Sweden.....😮
@Petterwass

And he had fired that teacher, the resulting lawsuit would not have gone well for the school at all. And there would not have been any ground to prosecute the student either, so this was either just bluster on the principal's side or you are lying

Drug or alcolics can't be fired due to thier addictions. True, but not entirely so. Your employer is by law forced to do what ever they can to provide help (get them to doctors, book appointments and so forth) for that employee, however it is still the responsibility of that employee to accept said help. If you choose not to and keep on as usual your employer do have the right to fire you. But thats quite a lengthy and complicated process. Also, many over here are complaining alot about or healthcare system. I can tell ypu from own experinence. When the shit hits the fan and rhe doctors and researchers grinding their gears to tru and save your life, its a pretty fckin awesome healthcare system. I wouldn't wanna trade it for astronomical bills and healthcare insurances with a gun pointed to my head.

The punctuality, is actually respect of the others time. If I am late and my friend is on time, I wasted his time. Swedes can absolutely be spontaneous, as long as we are given adequate lead time 😂 We are often much looser with timing when meeting up as a group, or going out. But if the risk is that someone is waiting around for an hour, many Swedes get anxious about not being tardy. The blood type thing varies, but the thinking is better to look it up, or type and match, than to rely on the patient for that vital information. I love salty black licorice, I get that Americans have never experienced it, but shoving it in ice cream is crime against humanity
@SailorYuki

You can fire someone for drug or alcohol related stuff, but only under certain conditions. they've done something to cause serious disruption or damage or threat to the company or staff, just to name a few. Usually, these things are discussed with the union beforehand. The rehab chain is strong, and although all employers are required to follow it, there are plenty of loopholes they can jump through. Especially since it's usually cheaper and easier to just pay the fine than deal with all the rehab stuff. There are 0 consequences for not following that law. Black liquorice is an acquired taste, as is all food. Eat a little every day, and after a while, you'll come to love it. A fair warning, though: liquorice, if consumed regularly, is poisonous. You can get liquorice paralysis by eating it too often. A small treat here and there is fine, just not daily. We can and do take vacations all year around. It's just that summertime is when the weather is the best and, well, schools are out. Traditionally, many factories closed in July, so that's where that's from.

Why is it more likely to retrieve your lost possessions in Sweden than in the US? Well, presumably it's a consequence of things like free/heavily subsidised medicine, free healthcare, education and so forth. Of course, not all poor people are dishonest, but fewer despeately poor people will most likely lead to less people being opportunistic and keep other people's lost things for themselves?
