Paying 1000 $ for that of a small apartment is very expensive. You could have rented a double-sized apartment for 200-300 $ a kilometer further away in Dorcol, which is still regarded as the center of the city and you need a 3-4 minute walk to Republic Square.

Hi girls, Serbian here, Im really glad you liked our capital ! It's booming economy for the past decade, especially in Belgrade so You can see a lot of modern buildings and busineses storming into city. Belgrade is also very popular location for a lot of freelance programmers due to low cost of living. For example you can rent apartment for around 300-400 euros a month and not some suburb location,im speaking of downtown or New Belgrade area, modern and new building of course. Belgrade is clash of cultures west/east, modern/old and thats why it has that good first impression no matter where you come from and a lot of people speak english and will gladly help you if you need anything Im really glad you had fun times, hope to see you again :)

I think that Belgrade generally feels much less expensive if you're used to North American pricing. There seemed to be quite a few other tourists here although maybe lesser than in non-COVID years. Based on our own experience, I would say leave some buffer for accommodations. We started off with a really strict accommodations budget but found that we needed to spend more in order to be really happy with our Airbnbs. By the way, thanks so much for purchasing our budget workbook. Hopefully it brings you many hours of happy planning! 😊
@SerbAtheist

Serbia didn't have much of a tourist draw until relatively recently and also is now in a period of prolonged economic growth which the Covid did nothing to slow down as it doesn't rely heavily on tourism. Thus, now is the perfect time to visit as there is every indication that Belgrade will become a pricier city in the relatively near future. Certainly not on par with Western Europe, but perhaps approaching Central Europe hubs such as Prague or Budapest.
@JDB-tc5rs
3 жыл бұрын
As a well-travelled Serb, I can say that the only Western European city that's on par with Serbian prices and "vibe" is Lisbon. Lisbon was always my fav go to place as it seemed a lot like Belgrade. As for the prices, their AirBnB was around the average price you can expect for a month worth of stay. I don't think that the pandemic contributed to lower prices, so they paid about the same price they would otherwise. I'm seeing more and more folks coming from the NA, and Western EU countries so the prices are sure to spike sometime, however I doubt they'll go above more than 10% of what they are now.
@OurFreedomYears

I spend, for a simple one dish meal and a glass of wine or a glass of beer in a regular restaurant, nothing fancy, about $15 per person. A cup of coffee in downtown is at least $2. The girls should check their bills again :) And the place they at every day - "Proleće"(Spring) is, after privatisation ( belonged to the city before) a notorious turist trap with low quality food, living from its old fame. Great video. How did you get the footage in Church of St Sava? Joey says that most Orthodox churches he's been in have been quite adamant about no photography or filming. He says it was like that in Finland and Estonia. When that came on screen, we both said "Wow!". Belgrade has definitely risen on his "must visit list". Just a question, based on your various Belgrade videos. There seems to be a lot of graffiti, is that all over or just in certain areas?
@OurFreedomYears
3 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear Belgrade made the list!The graffiti was pretty consistent throughout the city, especially outside the historic centre, but there was also quite a bit of interesting street art as well. No one seemed to mind about us filming in the church, although perhaps because it's not currently used for services.
@omrouk

@SerbAtheist
3 жыл бұрын
1) As for the Serbian Orthodox Church, in most churches, including St. Sava, it is OK to photograph or film, just not to use flash, and in most monasteries it is not. In general, it will be indicated on church doors whether photography is not allowed. 2) You will find sporadic graffitti all over Belgrade. This comes from decades of neglect of facades. Only in the last 10 years or so has major work begun on restoring facades across the city and, obviously, there is still a lot of work to be done. Still, the center areas have been cleaned up quite nice and nowadays there is a relatively low percentage of graffitti in the areas most frequented by tourists. The reason for the neglect is as follows: The communist government used war reparations to build large-scale apartment blocks to transform Yugoslav from a third world rural to a modern urban country. Still, people largely viewed only the interior of the apartment as 'their own space', while the government dusted its hands after the buildings were complete and also didn't care much about maintenance. Thus people simply got used to walking around buildings and common hallways that sometimes looked like the prime places to get robbed or a good setting for a horror movie and then you go in the apartments and you find perfectly nice and decent middle class apartments. The disconnect became even more drastic in the 90s during the hyperinflation era in Serbia. Still, even if there was more interest, the costs to clean up the facades on some of these concrete behemoths would have been prohibitively expensive for most of the populace. I feel Serbia has only recently achieved the level of economic prosperity where it can start to care about external appearance.

To be honest, the locals seem extremely relaxed about wearing masks and distancing. It's really up to the individual to take care of themselves. We're certainly happy to be vaccinated.

Hi .. To be honest people in Serbia are a little bit vaccine sceptic. Nevertheless 50+% of population is vaccinated with some even with third dose... Most of vaccinated population lives in Belgrade, Novi Sad... well basically in bigger cities... In rural areas it is far lower than I would like it to be... vaccines are available but some people just don't want it.
