Robbie, I suggest you put five feet of plywood around your greenhouse to keep the wild boars from breaking the plastic and getting in to eat your vegetables. You can also hunt them at night and enjoy the ham and bacon. But the plastic will not stop them from having a feast in your garden. Good luck, my friend!

Thanks so much for your support George! Means the world to us. That's a cool idea about the plywood, would you pout it right up against the plastic? How would you hold it there? We know it's just a matter of time before they break in, it's just we have so much on our plate it takes time to get around to these things, but the plywood would be a quick fix. Robbie has a bow, so we're definitely going to try and hunt one at some point, although still not sure we've got it in us to hurt an animal! Hopefully Sage will grow up to becoming a hunter so he can do it for us!

@@ladyandtheowlman Build a stone wall some meters around the greenhouse, because those boars can even push down a fence, let alone plywood. Why not put some kind of high pitched alarm too. Might scare them away. Some animals don't like the smell of pee. Peeing around the place might work too?

Thanks Katarina for all these ideas! (Sorry we missed you message before!) A stone wall could look pretty, cool idea, we have so much stone around it makes sense to use it... although we have seen boars jump some high walls (like a horse!) so maybe we'd need some barbed wire on top or an electric line? The alarm idea could be good too, although Robbie seems to be able to hear a lot of these alarms, not sure how haha, he's very sensitive to sounds so i think we're going to have to go for something structural - plus we like to not disturb the other smaller animals like lizards and frogs because they help keep all the bad bugs out of our gardens! Wow peeing that's a new one! We'll definitely give it a try! We also heard you can grind up bones and make sauce and paint it on stones and they don't like the smell of that either. All great ideas thanks so much for sharing!!

Looks like a pretty decent and robust tunnel you guys have built. May I suggest that you also find a piece of heavy shade net and just have it on standby to cover the tunnel if you get a heatwave because in a heatwave the temperatures can climb to over 50 degrees in a tunnel (ask me how I know) and all your plants will all be cooked. Apart from vegetables you might want to germinate some olive pips and if they do good and transfer outside into the soil well, do plenty more because just about any tree starts to allow grass and other plants to grow. Take the pips AND THE SKINS from someone locally who is pressing olive oil (1 part), mix in some compost and local soil (5 parts) in the cement mixer and you are done. Just a dozen small black plastic grow bags with the mix in (3 or 4 pips in each) and see what happens. If it goes well who knows, in 6 or 10 years you might be able to build your own brand of bespoke olive oil. Good luck - hope to see "Owl & Lady" olive oil on the market some time in the not too distant future.

Thanks again for your ongoing support! Some shade net in summer is a brilliant idea - we will definitely have some on standby. WOW olive seeds in a concrete mixer - that's pretty wild - but a cool idea! Might be a good strategy if we could plant like 1000 of them, and then when we put them out on the land later it doesnt matter if the sheep eat half of them. Right now we buy olives for around €5 each, but many of them don't make it past the first year. We'll send you the first bottle of Lady & the Owl man olive oil when it's ready! 🤩

It currently has a green shade cloth over it to stop the summer sun from damaging it too much, which actually works well to keep the inside temperature down (it's 35-40 degrees Celsius all summer). @@ladyandtheowlman Very definitely NOT boring! It is great to see the planning and hard work you put in - but most especially the great relationship and banter between you two! I enjoyed the slower pace, and a proper look at the work you (Robbie's polytunnel!) put in to it. Mind you - those pesky wild boars are ...ummm, frustrating! You live in a glorious place with world class views but it comes at a cost, of sorts. The mouflon sheep, wild boars and domesticated sheep are a great asset and a pain in the arse! (is that a Spanish word?) I hope they don't get in to your "inner sanctum" and destroy your polytunnel after so much love and hard work have gone in to it! The inner zone, to me, means the house, main veg patch and polytunnel area.... Is it possible to surround that area with a couple of strands of high tension wire? I would look in to having a decent sized solar panel charging a lead-acid battery (car battery) used to power an agricultural energiser. I've never heard that 'love language' idea before! I wish to goodness I had.
@ladyandtheowlman
8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the ideas here Neil and ongoing support! It's an interesting idea to fence off our "inner sanctum". Everytime we're about to try and build a fence we change our minds, because it all becomes too daunting, with the steep mountainside and big rocks everywhere, it seems like making a fence would take months of work and cost A LOT, but if we could just make a perimeter close to the house, that could work. Sometimes we wished we lived on nice big flat area of land with no rocks or terraces so we could throw a fence together in a few days! The idea of 'high tensioned' electric fence could work, we built that pretty big electric fence in our first episode on our channel and the sheep broke it down the day after, when they come in a big herd it's dificult to stop the animals because the first few get shocked then the rest just pile over them and break the fence without feeling the shock. Appreciate the ideas, please keep them coming! 🧡

Great episode, and you two have a great shared sense of humor, it's a pleasure to watch. Now, about the food forest destroyed by the wild boars, I understand the frustration. But forests are a slow-mo process, and I think you gotta slow down a bit more before expecting results. Let me explain. There are different ways of growing food forests, but most are heavy about support species. Some support species can protect trees from wildlife, some provide shade for fruit trees, some provide nitrogen fixing and so on. To prevent the wild boar issue, you would grow those for 2-4 years, and only then plant your fruit trees. Not sure what kind of natural protection to plant, but, for inspiration: willows and probably other plants can be woven into living fences that graft together over time; and super-thorny bushes with a fruit tree eventually planted inside will discourage wildlife from making it to the trees.

Thanks so much for your comment! I think we cut a lot of bits out of the video where we're not getting on so well haha, but yes generally we do work well together! Some great ideas here THANK YOU! Unfortunately most of the trees that got dug up were support species 🤦🏻♀️ A willow woven fence is a cool idea, or planting lots of thorny bushes and then planting fruit trees inside them later is another cool idea - I guess thats how nature intended trees to find a way to survive in the wild.

I make it in steel barrels, but am seriously thinking about buying a professional "reactor" for time and material efficiency. In your situation, as far as I know it, I would chip a third and use it for mulching. The second third I would chip it also and compost it together with the biochar I'd make from the last third. I would use the thicker material for biochar.

Weather forecast was supposed to be very very bad where you are, I hope you all okay, keep up the great work, Look forward to seeing you next part of your adventure, Not sure if I mentioned, that I have been struggling with my ex, And for the last four years, I’ve been living by myself in the property that we both owned in France and old Mill, the property now has been finally signed over just to my name, this is only taken about a year and a half to do, great expense, and I’m just waiting for some paperwork to be translated, that’s got to be sent back to the UK, and I should have some funds being released, Not a lot, but hopefully might be able to get some repair work finished off on the property, as I did not want to do any work on it for the last four or five years, until all this have been resolved, I have lost a huge amount of money, in the hundreds of thousands, As I have spent the last 20 years restoring two properties, one in the UK one in France , to a very high standard, I was just being used for money and my skills, I do miss being at work, as I had my own business, making specialist windows, doors and furniture et, Have been thinking about starting a little business again, but my property needs some work doing to it first, mainly on the large garage that I can use as a workshop, my basement is full of tools and machinery, hardly enough room to walk around, Sadly, I had to sell some of my machinery, a bit some pieces before I moved to France as I needed the money, I even had a Harley Davidson that I had walked brand-new back in the 2000, had to go as well, I used to run my business out of a very large building, approximately 8 m x 36 m, I wished I had that today with all my tools, I find it very difficult as I do not speak French , living by myself in the French countryside, and cannot do much because I do not have any funds as such, so hopefully in the next few days or a week I should have some money and then about to progress restoring my property, Has Nemo said in his film mine mine mine , 😂 , that’s enough for me, ramping on, I wish you all the success for the future. Stay safe., I did hear the storm was coming your way I’m not quite sure if I’ve said this before , might need to buckle down the hatches, hopefully poly tunnel should be okay, as that’s been fixed into the ground very good job, speak and catch up with you later. Thank you for sharing your story Phil, it's good to speak about these things to make sense of it all. Sounds like you've got a lot of tools and experience to finish renovating your house at a reasonable cost, and perhaps do some work for others in your area too for a good little side income! In our valley, it seems that when someone has skills they very quickly find themselves in full time work, helping everyone fix things in their houses. Our next project after the compost toilet will be to finish the roof on our old donkey shed, so we can make a good workshop/ storage place for all of our stuff; it's about time we had a really good space to put it all nicely organised. Keep us updated with how yours goes and we can share ideas! You could definitely get your business going again - when you've got the skills and the tools I don't think the language barrier will be too difficult for you, just put yourself out there as someone who can get a job done and you'll find word spreads fast in these small communities and soon enough you'll be putting your skills back in action doing work for people. Robbie certainly doesn't know much Spanish but he can talk his way around a builders merchants here very easily now with just a few lines!

Forgive me for interfering but I used Google Translate to understand what you wrote, and struggled a little. I think you are saying that the woodburner in the background at 18:54 look lovely but it would be much more efficient to have it *outside* the fireplace (not within, or directly under, the chimney) so that all the heat goes into the room being heated and not up the chimney?
@ladyandtheowlman

Hi, 8:56 please don't add acacia to your land. It grows like mint, it has thorns on the bark when it's young, it's hard to get rid of. My ancients put some acacia in a pasture and now we can't get in without covering our eyes. That being said, it's useful for stakes if you want to make fence posts.

Thank you Flandrin for your advice! That's really interesting information, we had some idea they can grow quickly and spread, but what you're describing doesn't sound very good at all! uggh the wildlife sabotage is brutal..this was the darkest episode yet could you use metal cages around the trees until they grow big enough to survive? or could you consider planting trees that are already big enough but imported from elsewhere?
@ladyandtheowlman
4 ай бұрын
Thanks Adam! Haha we hope not too dark! But yes the wild boar attacks can be quite demoralising for sure! We have a video coming up where we make a really good fence around the food forest though, so we hope good vibes from here on out for those trees! We usually use livestock fencing around each tree but for the trees in this video we had taken the fencing off temporarily, and tried to stop the animals with prunings from our almond trees. For sure once the trees are a big bigger they are ok, the mouflon eat the lower branches and the wild boar do some damage to the roots, but they generally survive. One problem with the mouflon is they like to massage their horns on larger branches when the tree is older, and often they snap the larger branches off which isn't great haha. Also some of the goats will stand in the tops of the olive trees and eat everything up there too!

We spend a lot of our monthly budget on buying organic meat from a long way away, so it makes so much more sense to eat the organic meat roaming our land! And at least we know exactly where the meat has come from. Any ideas on how you'd catch these mountain beasts? Robbie has a bow in england he's thinking of bringing over to try and catch a boar, but we've never hunted an animal before so not sure what that experience will be like! Perhaps we don't have it in us, we're not sure yet!

Don't worry about your toe. The nail will turn blue and drop off and a new one will grow behind it. Spain is not the best choice in the world to do off grid living. Have heard to many bad stories and seen some very upset and dissapointed people pack up and leave. If the government want to build a road or anything near your land, they will take it and not pay you for it and there has been a lot of controversy with neighborours over land boundaries. It is impossible to be self reliant as there are certain things we all use that can't be grown, like coffee, tea,coconuts, pineapples, bananas. You would be far better off here in Portugal where it is safer, friendlier the government don't steel your land and a lot of Brits scattered about the country, o and a better water supply.

Thanks for your advice Robert, we really appreciate it! Do you live in Portugal? Do you have a homestead too? You’re right - it will be pretty difficult to become 100% self sufficient, because, my gosh, does Robbie drink a lot of coffee! A lot of the land around us is protected land, and popular with the hunters, so we feel it is unlikely they will want to disturb the nature because it seems like absolutely everybody here goes hunting! But thanks for the insights, we’ll take care! 💫
